Hi All, I thought I'd start a new 2006 thread for the October 2004 Mummies and Babies.

biglips · 23/02/2006 12:32

oh well heres the big news for me..........

ive sorted out a day nursery for baba (gulp!!) as im looking for a full time job atm and the nursery is a lovely place and people are lovely too.... has to drag DD out though!!!!

its only a 5 mins walk to the day nursery too! i thought what a bonus!!

geogteach · 23/02/2006 13:03

Well baby geog's big sister started pre school yestaday he is less than impressed at having just mummy to play with!
All those of you doing the potty thing 'yer mad' leave it, when they are older it happens much quicker and hopefully you can miss out potty's all together, can't stand the things - thats geogteaches sermon of the day over with

maisiemog · 23/02/2006 19:34

OMG Biglips! That seems sudden. Why are you going full-time? I have part-time hours, in the evening and weekend, which suits me just now.
I'm sure baba will get on well at her nursery, she sounds like a friendly (too friendly, squishing the other babies ) baby.
Geo we are trying the potty, to get alfie used to it. He gets nappy rash from poop, so I'm hoping if he does one poop in the potty it will give his bum a rest.
I'm kind of adopting the 'no sweat' approach, and not pressurising him or me. However, it does work I know of a lot of people who have fully potty-trained their babies at 2 and have had no major problems. Seems like a deal.
I don't want to be putting Alfie to bed in a nappy when he's four, which seems quite common these days - my great granny would have turned in her grave.

OP posts:
geogteach · 24/02/2006 10:19

Just talking from experience DS1 was trained at 2 and is still in nappy at night at 4, looking at my mates kids just think they do it when ready and as I said before I loathe potties

maisiemog · 24/02/2006 12:20

I am interested in trying Elimination Communication, which is where you watch the baby for signals that it wants to pee or poop, in China or India there are no nappies, the parents just watch the baby and hold it over a bowl or the loo when it wants to go. As babies get older they start to use verbal communication or signing to tell their parents that they need to go potty. One lady I know has been practicing EC (as it's known) and her ds is now 13 months and never poops in his nappy, only on the potty. He has been doing signing and signs to her when he needs poops, so around twice a day or whatever he goes to the potty.
We're starting late at 15 months so it will be more tricky for me, so I'm not going to pressurise him. I would like to get him to do at least one poop a day in the potty, as his skin reacts badly to a dirty nappy, so I'm kind of watching him and learning whether he exhibits any signals before he poops or peeps.
It is a bit time-consuming, and not for everyone, but there are a lot of arguments for practising, so I've decided I will try it. Only time will tell ...

good luck to you maisiemog

yeah the job thing had been talked about for a while till now as we've got no money and the mortgage protection is finished in june

sssooooo there you go!

i was saying to Dp today "I cant see baba sleeping when all teh the others are sleeping at the nursery" nad dp said " i know as she doesnt like anyone sleeping as i can imagine her saying OI!!! WAKE UP!!!!"... the shame!!

biglips · 24/02/2006 14:39

dp said (jokingly - i think!!!) "youre 6 kids into 1!!!!" - eeeek! its more or less true as she is a handful!!!

starting from next week.. ill be taking baba in the day nursery for an hour a week (its free for me 3 times if im there) and after that ill build it up to 2 hours so baba can get used me not being there as she is a clingy baba as she is with me 24/7 but mum had started to take baba off me for a day as she did last monday... felt sssoooo weird as i felt that i left baba on the bus!!

biglips · 24/02/2006 14:40

maisie - how is.......Alfie? (i had to check the names!! )

biglips · 24/02/2006 18:09

well i dont think the playpen is gonna be much use for DD as i was watching her of how far she can climb out and she was on teh top of the playpen like a monkey!!!

KathH · 25/02/2006 08:51

Masiemog - would be really interested to know how you get on with the poop cues! I've never done potty training before the age of 2, moley is quite good at I've already pooped cues - he goes and fetches a nappy! It must be because he cant wait to stick his fingers in it!

IslaAndMomma · 25/02/2006 13:13

Hi all. Had pooter related issues but back on again now!

masie - isla gets on really well at nursery. she's been going since may last year and has now moved into the big girl room (1 to 2 years). she's been reluctant cos she knows the girls so well she wanted to stay. she's now getting used to the new faces and has picked out her favourite! she's now there 1.5 days per week and with a childminder for a full day. its a nice mix for her - her childminder is the mother of a partner at work. she's more like a surrogate grandmother. as they're retired she has undivided attention all day and they have the time to take her out places.

i need to book to take isla to health visitor this week. she's always had a couple of patches of eczema but just lately its been gettin worse. i've cut out using baby washes and bubble bath but its not making any difference. i've been putting sudocrem on the sore areas but it doesnt seem to be having much affect anymore

poor baba

fascinated by the potty training approach. let us know how you get on. i've tried introducing the potty but i dont think she's ready yet. she just screams if i try and sit her on it. she always has a wee after her bath so i've been trying to catch that one in the potty! she usually goes on the floor - will point at it and say "wee wee" - but she seems to call all puddles that now too!!

geogteach · 26/02/2006 19:04

Failed to get MMR done again this week, I did go but they refused because he had a cold, he's going to be having it at 21 at this rate.

maisiemog · 27/02/2006 19:05

Alfie still hasn't had his MMR either Geo, just avoid babies with red dots on their faces. Smile
I'll have to phone the HV tomorrow to see if they can fit him in, he's had a cold, but I think he's over it. I, on the other hand, have had a stinker and it's in my sinuses now, so I can just about remember which number comes after five, eight isn't it? Grin
I have been watching Alfie like a hawk, to see if he exhibits signs of needing the potty. So far the only signs are that the carpet is wet or there is a funny smell.
He does go a bit glazed and stop whatever he is doing for a pee or poop, and he kind of grunts for both, but more for poops. Oh and he keeps grabbing his peepee when he needs a wee.
I definately think there is an element of timing, like after meals, when he has had a nap etc.. I think most babies can peep when they wake up, so working on that basis I started his brek and he was holding his peepee, then he started to peep on my foot. Aaaah! He stopped, and I put him on the potty and went psssss, and he did a peepee on the potty. Smile
Then after his nap, I put on the TV and he sat on his potty for ages, and after there was a peepee in the potty, and on the floor a bit. Shock
I'm so pleased with him for sitting and peeping, it's ridiculous.
Isla'smummy, Alfie has had the potty for a while now, he hated it for a while as well, but I sat him on it with his nappy on, when I knew he was tired and let him watch cbeebies.
Kath, that Moley is a clever little boy, bringing you his nappy.
I'm going to order an EC book, so I can get more of an idea of what I'm doing. Smile
How's the job hunting going Biglips? Is your partner working? Mine's a Phd student and still writing up, but he's looking for something as well now.

OP posts:
KathH · 27/02/2006 21:34

Well done Alfie! Moley makes strange noises too when he's doing his business, either that or he goes and lurks quietly in a corner! His latest problem is that he's now got thrush at both ends which I think is from the antibiotics he had, feel like the dr may give me my own chair in the waiting room - guess I'm making up for the other 3 who have hardly been to the drs and the eldest was 13 last week. His execma's also really bad as well. Sleeping is still crap as well but in a couple of weeks when he's well and truly over his various ailments I'm going to try and tackle this, easier said than done. He's still not had his mmr either but we've had enough excitement for the time being. HV when she came round the other week to see if he was ok said " hmmm, he's a bit troublesome this one, isnt he?"

maisiemog · 27/02/2006 22:49

Kath, poor old Moley. I'm glad to hear he's as much of a nuisance as ever. At least he's keeping his chin up and his nose into everything.
Why did the HV think he was troublesome? How big is Moley? Have you posted his photo on the members area?
Give him hugs from me. Smile
How long has he had exczema? I noticed a rash on Alfie's back that could be a bit of exczema.
I found a non-hydrocortisone cream in boots called Allergenics Intensive Care, it seems very good, and it's good on his red bum. Shock They've stopped stocking it so they're selling loads of it off halfprice, so I'm going back tomorrow with a forklift.
Have you read up on the sleep thing? Does he keep waking up, or does he not go to sleep?
Maybe once he's feeling a bit better he might find it easier to sleep. Hopefully.
Does he have naps?

OP posts:
KathH · 28/02/2006 20:56

Masiemog - took him to gp today, he's never had excema before but gp thinks its all related to the stress he's been thru (god knows what will happen to my skin!) & that the thrush is all related too so we ended with 5 prescriptions, he's draining nhs resources at the mo!

He keeps waking up but I am trying to think it will get better once he's over everything, last nite he woke at 10.15 and didnt go back off til gone 1. I'm still at the "at least he's ok even if I feel terrible" stage.

biglips · 28/02/2006 23:17

maisie - ha ha ha about the forklift Grin... mine at the mo got a very spotty botty on 1 bot.. the only ive chnaged is the babys wipes perfumed.... as usually i buy non-perfumed Asda ones but had none in stock!

Kathh- aww poor little Moley having thrush atm... mine had that when she was a week old as she had oral thrush - my fault as i was touching the teats when i didnt know i shouldnt be touching them!!! Blush

today baba was happy to toddled down the street (with reins of course!!) after we've been to the park... i tried to put her gloves on as her hands were red and blue coz it was so blimey freezing but baba kept taking them off! - grr!

took baba to mcDonalds this week and i was so impressed that she sucked the fresh orange juice out of bottle by using a straw!

maisiemog · 28/02/2006 23:19

Poor Moley, oh well at least you are getting it sorted and your gp sounds helpful. I always find Alf wakes up more when he is under the weather. Moley is a smart little boy, he knows mummy will come and make him feel better when he feels ill. He's been through such a lot (and you as well), he's probably being a bit clingy and daft. It's so wearing though, when they are like that, if you are tired as well.
I always have poo sleep when I'm ill, the other day, I couldn't breathe with the cold, and kept waking up with that totally dry mouth you get when you only breathe through your mouth. I must have woken about five times.
It must have been so hard on you going through all the stress of the meningitus thing and then all the repercussions of that and the treatment makes the whole thing drag on.
We had a whole load of poo when Alfie was born, first the problems because I had a fibroid then the impact on the delivery, then the stress of everything on Alfie, then me crying all the time stuck in hospital, it was sooo tiring. But I'm alright now and Alfie's bounced right back and is a healthy boy. By the time the Spring really starts I reckon Moley will be a new baby.
Smile

biglips · 28/02/2006 23:23

how many kids have you all got again Blush? as my memory is crap!!!

biglips · 28/02/2006 23:24

oh and any working mums... pls tell me your routine that you have on average if you dont mind

as im dreading when i go back to work and gotta wake up early!!! - eek!!! i love my sleep!!! Sad.. ill have to go to bed at 9pm every nite!!

KathH · 01/03/2006 20:29

Biglips - no routine as such, varying degrees of chaos! Not really, the only thing is I have to be really organised, make sure I get everything ready the night before etc. I also get my mum to do my ironing (there are 6 of us so thats my excuse). Only downside is I spend all weekend catching up on jobs. Have you found anything yet? What kind of job are you thinking about/going to do?

maisiemog · 01/03/2006 23:39

I work part-time: three evenings and a Sunday, it's great for me because my dp is still writing up his Phd, so he looks after Alf.
But he is looking for full-time work now, so I may have to re-arrange my days: the university are quite flexible, so I may swap days with other people, so that I am working more days when my mum is available in the afternoon.
I may have to get a childminder for one or two afternoons, I don't even know if that is possible.
I don't want to put Alfie in a big nursery, even though there is one round the corner from me. Maybe when he is three, but I prefer the idea of him being in a home with one carer and a few other kids at his age.
Could your mum take baba for some time during the week? I know she wasn't very helpful before.
Could you work hours that weren't 9-5 so that Baba can stay with your DP some of the time you are at work?
Kath, how's Moley's exczema?
We had a hell night last night with Alfie not sleeping at all. He went to bad around 7 then cried, I think he slept for a bit, but I was in bed at 3am and he was still bouncing around.
Finally, I got up to check his nappy and it was just after 6am. I just stayed up with him after that. I think it may have been some Boots Sinus capsules that I took coming out in my milk and making Alfie totally hyper. Shock
So we're all tired today.

OP posts:
maisiemog · 01/03/2006 23:43

Biglips, I've just got Alfie. I think a lot of people have more than one baby on this list. You and I and Isla's Mummy are the one-child mummies.
Reibee, are you there? How is the business, are you busy. What's Chimpy up to?
I would love to see more babies on the member's profiles, so far I have seen Baba, Isla, Toby, I'm probably forgetting, but I can't remember seeing many others. If anyone wants me to do a bit of picture shrinking for the, I've got a couple of packages on my PC that do a good job.
