Weaning.....argh, feel like am starting all over again having finally at 6 months got to grips with what I should be doing.

Alps sorry to hear you are down, hope you have a better week. Hope you are feeling better CC. Apols and headbutts to all for not keeping up with fred.

CUNextTuesday · 10/04/2011 22:36

Can't help you really ref weaning. I didn't follow the planner as such, just ysed her meal ideas as to what type of food to give at brekkie, lunch, tea. Then i just made the rest up. Fairly soon got into Aptamil porridge or wholegrain brekkie with mashed nana at 9.15 (after a bf around 7 ish), then veg based puree at lunch, then something protein for dinner. Supplemented with petit filou or yoghurt, and milk at about 11 and 3.30 and 7 before bed. HTH.

But if it's first tastes advice you want, go as normal with feeds to somewhere between 11 and 1 then do your puree then, with bf-lite either before or after to drain off. Eventually you'll drop that feed.

Oh hooray, I'm glad I'm not alone in my "if in doubt, get yer tits out" approach. Well it's always served me well in the past. Grin

It's only started playing on my mind because of the ongoing cluster feeding before bed. But then last night she slept for nearly 7 hours so maybe giving up my evenings isn't so bad. It's just we're off to the in-laws for a week soon and I'm worried there will be comments. Although god knows why as they're lovely and MIL breastfed so knows what it's like. I am just paranoid.

AlpinePony · 11/04/2011 06:37

Like cunty we just made it up as we went along. HV recommended that long-term (6-12 months) we should be going down to 3 bottles a day - but taking over 500ml over the course of these. Have no idea how this would translate to boobs - but I guess for your sanity as much as anything else you'd like to stop a big ol' bunch of feeds between 11pm and 6am!

We started out just offering a bit of fruit puree for breakfast the first week, then a bit of veggie puree early evening, then a fromage frais after these, or a biscuit mid-morning & mid-afternoon and now at lunchtime I give him "whatever's going" really, ham sarnie/fried egg - for us, lunch is less about eating and more about having a play with food & practising his hand-eye co-ordination. (Can also eat in peace Blush.)

Schedule was pretty much (and still is):
6am : Bottle
9am : Fruit/porridge/meusli + fromage frais
10:30am : Biscuit
12pm : Mummy's plate of chunks to be thrown at the dogs
1pm: Milk
3pm: Biscuit
5:30pm: Bolognese + potato/sausage/casserole/stirf-fry/jar + fromage frais
9pm: Sleep feed Milk

Cosmosis · 11/04/2011 08:46

I just made it up as I went along, re weaning. Just followed sensible advice re honey, salt sugar etc, and then offered a bit of what we were having if suitable, or something spread on a rice cake if what we were having is no good. Re milk, I was under the impression you shouldn't be dropping any feeds, more waiting till they drop them iyswim. I do milk about an hour before solids, as was told it was best to offer solids when they're not hungry.

muse cluster feeding is a good thing, it's what they do to tank themselves up before bedtime, don't stop it! I found a good way to respond to the "oh my goodness is he feeding again?" question was just "yes". It kind of stumps them. Besides, if the hot weather continues you can always say "well aren't you thirsty in this heat?" or somesuch.

So Artie's ear is leaking again. less than a week after he finished the anti-bs for the last infection. Can't get a docs appointment till Wednesday, unless it's an emergency. Don't really think it's an emergency as he's reasonably happy and temp is raised but not sky-high. Will monitor though, can always take him to ooh docs tonight if we need to. It does explain the 2 completely shit nights we've had though.

FannyPriceless · 11/04/2011 08:48

muse Are you proposing this as the next thread title? FESH motto 'If in doubt, get yer tits out'.Wink (Though obv this would provoke cats bum mouth in rest of MNers.Grin)

silv I I can't answer your specific questions as we have not used any 'system' - a bit like the BF on demand we just went slightly ad hoc with it all. We started with fruit puree which he refused, so then tried baby rice/porridge instead. We used Plum four grain which is fab and he still loves it. Then introduced some simple veg purees, gradually increasing complexity and introducing more ingredients. Mixed in with this gave him simple things to pick up with his hands: rice cakes, steamed veg or fruit, toast, items nicked from Bonnie's plate, etc.

Between 6 and 12 months milk is still their primary source of nutrition so I don't fret too much at the moment. He now has three meals a day but if he doesn't eat very much I just offer him more milk. I roughly try to make sure he is getting a balanced diet over the day - some veg, fruit, protein, carbs, dairy. This can sometimes lead to odd meals as I add various bits and pieces but he doesn't mind.

CUNextTuesday · 11/04/2011 08:51

Rastus has toast and honey for weekend breakfast Grin

AlpinePony · 11/04/2011 08:58

Aaaaah - but have you given him peanuts yet? Wink We have no allergies in either family so I'm not overly perturbed and have given him strawberry which is apparently an allergen. I'm probably being a bit PFB but will try the peanut (butter ?) when the tank is full and JB's home.

I meant to say we also give him a sippy cup to have water from. I don't do juice.

I got a glorious night last night, he slept from 7 -7:30 and only woke me once in the night.

AlpinePony · 11/04/2011 09:00

Oh, also citrus fruits? Why are they "banned"? Jars seem to have orange in them and the worst I've heard is that they can give explosive shits. But tbh, he's 9 months now and I'm not going to feed him bland dust.

Cosmosis · 11/04/2011 09:12

I think they are thought to give nappy rash Alps, but Artie has had orange a couple of times with no probs.

We also don't do juice, no need. get them used to water

FannyPriceless · 11/04/2011 09:20

We gave Bonnie a peanut butter sandwich when she was about 9 mths old. I did know I had to watch her (not entirely useless) but she vomitted everything straight back up.Confused She was a very vomitty baby though so we weren't sure if it was related.

Phoned doctor who said 'Next time you try something like this would you please be sitting in the car parked outside the local hospital'Grin. (Not entirely sure he was joking.)

Yes alps / cos we also offer water only in the sippy cup. Do not wish to have rotten-toothed child. He grabs the cup and gulps it down!

PollyPoo · 11/04/2011 09:51

Morning FESHlets, how is everyone today? Sorry to hear about Clyde's rush to hossie FP, poor little lamb, glad he is ok now. And sorry too about Artie and his leaky ear. Cos if you ring the doctors you might be able to get a phone consult and a prescription put up without you having to see the doc. We did that when BB got repeated thrush in the mouth.

We don't do juice in this house either. Boo is nearly 4 and is more than happy to drink water. She gets diluted juice if she is ill and off her food, just to get some calories into her.

Curlsworld how are you feeling now? I hope you are feeling better. Are you back at work today?

Speaking of illness, Boo had a temp of 103 from Thurs until this morning. She is full of cold and hadn't got rid of the last cough she had. Sad then she ate a tiny corner of sandwich and some blueberries for tea on Saturday and promptly regurgitated it back onto the plate... lovely. And on Friday I came down with sore throat and hideous cough and spent most of the weekend feeling like shite. Typically, TG was away this weekend. He didn't offer to cancel his plans seeing as we were ill, oh no. Tbh, I'd have made him go anyway - had a very relaxed weekend with my girls despite illness.

Alps sorry to hear you have been feeling low. Waiting to see how the week pans out sounds like a good plan. I feel so much better these days, a combination of the tablets and getting more sleep I think. TG usually does the last feed around 11pm and I go to bed around 10. BB sleeps until around 7 or 8am, bless her. Saying that (before I get lynched!), I rarely get a solid nights sleep as BB is very noisy - snorty and snuffly and throwing herself around the cot. She managed to twist herself around until her head was banging on the bars the other night. But in good news we have reached that wonderful stage where she wakes up and coos at her hands or toys, instead of bellowing at me for milk! I'd forgotten how lovely that is. I just lie there smiling to myself and listening to her gurgling and chuckling. Smile

Going back to convo about children not being able to lie, Boo told me the other day that my tummy was too squishy. We then had a long conversation about how it might be true, but it wasn't a very nice thing to say. I then asked her what she should say (meaning 'sorry') and she look confused and said 'But I don't know what to say mummy'. She then followed it up by saying 'Um... your tummy is too fat mummy?' 'Is that right?' Hmm

FannyPriceless · 11/04/2011 09:58

polls My neice once told me I had hair on my chin!ShockBlush Now whenever I visit them I make sure I do a really thorough stray hair inspection first, as I was mortified.

PollyPoo · 11/04/2011 10:16

Hah! Bloody charming aren't they... Actually Boo does say nice things too sometimes, like 'you look pretty today mummy' (because I've bothered to put on a bit of mascara) or 'oooh I like that dress, I want one like that'. She is so girly. Gawd knows where she gets that from cos it ain't from me.

Muser · 11/04/2011 10:16

Oh dear, that comment of Boo's did make me laugh. Sorry you've all been poorly.

SilverSky · 11/04/2011 10:55

Thanks for all the info about how you weaned. I too already decided no juice but mainly cos am lazy than anything else!! MB still getting 5 milk feeds a day. When will I know he's ready to drop a feed?

Tho HI took MB out and was still out when a feed was due. He didn't realise that MB would need feeding.

Another dumbass question : is my baybee 6mths when he is 24wks (which is soon) or on 1st May ??

SilverSky · 11/04/2011 10:59

Loving the proposed next Fred title!!

Cosmosis · 11/04/2011 11:16

26 weeks is 6 mo silvia.

ha ha at Boo!! have to say its one of the things i am looking forward to re talking Grin

I think I need to see doc as last time I was at my dads so not our surgery.

CurlyCasper · 11/04/2011 13:37

'lo all.
Am back in the office and trying not to snort too loudly over these comments being made by Boo and co. How is Boo now pol?

Poor Artie - but good that he's not letting it get to him.

Squeaks is still not right. (and TBH I don't feel right either) We're on nappy watch before making a decision about nursery tomorrow. I really don't want to have to take a day off with her already.

silv we also just found our own way with weaning. I offered milk separately to meals because Squeaks would happily reject a bottle in favour of more grub. Can't even remember which time of day I started at. But if it helps her routine now looks a little like this:

7am: - couple of ounces of milk if she wants it, then Weetabix, with Formula
9.30am: 4-5 oz milk
Noon: Lunch (main course and yoghurt, or other dessert at nursery)
3ish: bottle. (this will very soon be just a snack, I think)
4.30/5pm: dinner
6.30-7: bedtime milk (8oz max)
And we think she's pretty much dropping the 10pm top-up, but will have to see after she's felling better.

Must go.

Cosmosis · 11/04/2011 15:54

hope you are both feeling better soon Casp. I'm doing 2 consecutive days this week, tomorrow - Thurs, so will be shattered by the end. It's not the being at work that's tiring, that's quick relaxing as you don't have to have one eye out on the baybee at all times, it's the before and after that are tiring, it just seems non stop.

Muser · 11/04/2011 16:02

Why won't my baby nap? I did the sling. I took her out in the pram. I swaddled. I used white noise. I sang. I patted. I rocked. No sleeping. Lots of crying, so hard at one point she actually stopped making any noise (I was changing her nappy).

I don't understand her. One day she'll nap spontaneously and be happy. Then the next she won't at all and still be happy. And then there are days like today. I'm doing a baby massage class after Easter. I really hope it teaches me some amazing tricks.

Cosmosis · 11/04/2011 16:08

Oh I know that cry! it's horrible isn't it? Does she feed to sleep? I don't do it much any more but I relied on it a lot when he was tiny. I think sometimes they get so tired they are just beyond themselves and can't nap even with things that would normally make them nap.

Muser · 11/04/2011 16:14

She feeds to sleep at night but it doesn't seem to work during the day. She stays determinedly awake. If she does come off sleepy she wakes straight up again.

CurlyCasper · 11/04/2011 16:31

Does it happen often muse? (sorry if I should know the answer to that). because sometimes they just have off days. I know that's not a solution, but telling myself that when I was at my wit's end helped.

Baby's bum still runny, so I guess that's her off nursery and me off work tomorrow Sad
