Shiny new thread, as promised fellow FEBers!

Figured we would start another new one to mark first birthdays, bethlou, so I've held fire on referencing that landmark in this thread title - hope that's okay with y'all!

Anyway, welcome everybody, pull up a comfy chair, someone get the wine out and I'll open a huge box of chocolates for us all to share.

Mince Pies It's easy! Having a second is easily the best decision I ever made [grin
I brush her teeth in the evening after her bottle and before bedtime books/songs. Should really start morning brushing as well now because she has 12 teeth and the canines visible under her gums.

Chestnut no more excuses then Grin (PS. Glad you stuck to a food name so that I can remember you are watercress).

stangirl are you showing yet? I joked that with dd2 I showed a few minutes after conception... Grin. I certainly looked much more pregnant much more quickly but didn't get any bigger overall in the end

IC sorry, forgot to say I use small hair slides that clip shut... Forgot to remove it today for her lunchtime nap but she was fine and didn't find or eat it.

thanks everyone, too, for the kind words about jobs etc. I was made redundant just before finding out I was expecting dd2 which in a way worked out very well - with hindsight. I have always had temporary contracts. dh has had a 'permanent' job for years but it gets 'restructured' every two years or so. He is done pretty well so far in getting a new and better contract and I am hugely impressed he is really committed. I tend to take things more personally and would struggle to do my job properly Blush. Ah well, I am sure it will work out for the best. We are not tied to any place iin the UK and happy to move, so job searching is not a problem (until dd1 starts school I guess).

BC do have it checked but I agree it could just be the camera angle. Or try another photo with flash to see if it comes out the same? It's hugely worrying but quite rare. Smile

BabyGiraffes · 05/01/2011 19:57

my dentist recommended using a small amount of baby toothpaste but not wet the toothbrush, letting them swallow/eat it rather than rinse their mouth...
IC are you saying you have no fillings at all? Wow [envious]

InmaculadaConcepcion · 05/01/2011 20:10

Thanks for the clip clarification, BG!

Nope, no fillings here - my sister (18 months younger) doesn't have any either. I think it's a combination of inheriting good gnashers from our parents and my mum's solid teeth-brushing routine instilled into us from an early age.

Right - time for beddy-byes.

Looking at the number of posts on this thread and realising we're now only three weeks away from the first of out babies' birthdays (including my own DD!) I reckon it's time for a new one. I'll get onto that tomorrow (unless anyone else wants to do it, I'm more than happy to set one up, but feel free if one of you wants to..!!)

Los Reyes tomorrow - so we've got DD a couple of books and ourselves a chocolate and cream-filled roscon... yum! Grin

Here's a picture of bump 1 versus bump 2, both a few days before the girls were born, and probably of no interest to anyone but myself Grin

PenguinArmy · 05/01/2011 21:00

Wow, lots of posts (good stuff)

Stangirl huge congratulations, was this your first cycle post DD? I'm in shock for you I think.

DD has seemed to have changed loads in a few days. Suddenly the ma ma noise has come out along with a few others like blab. She's starting to wave and say hi ya in the right places. It's a progression from a noise she used to make a lot anyway.

We don't brush her teeth yet Blush. Her teeth came out just a few weeks before we were due to fly, so we were going to wait until then as we left her toothbrush in the UK (even though they're cheap). Then we rearranged the flights. Will def start them though. Lots of interesting advice.

We took her out on her trike today, she loved it (we also have her dressed in a strawberry pixie outfit).

She's 10 months today and woke up in her 3-6 months babygro.

Work sent me home as I have DDs raging cold :)

Plus my brother has come to say and the first thing he said was that I have lost loads of weight and am skinnier than ever (it's true I actually weight less than pre-pregnancy now) GrinSmile. He can definitely stay

Love and hugs to everyone that I've ignored

mamaloco · 06/01/2011 06:15

I tried to brush teeth as soon as they appeared but she is not having it, don't want to make it a struggle yet as it will get worse in the future she is happy chewing the brush and bitting into clothes.

rotten teeth at 18 months is extreme and only happen in environment where you let baby suck on a teat with sugar all day long.

MW in the UK said a cloth to wipe is enough at the beginning. the brush is to get them use to it.
On the continent no toothpaste before 18 months, and the risk with adult toothpaste is the swallowing, which always happens and is bad for the stomach (antibacterials, high dose of fluoride...). Babies don't have rotten teeth more than in the UK.

Most of it is genetic too, DD1 had already had 2 micro cavities, due to her teeth being deeply grooved. I will probably coat her adult teeth to avoid decay. It also depends of what bacteria you pass down to your children.

I try to brush around bath time or when she sees DD1 brushes her teeth. Before the last bottle.

PA hope you feel better soon. happy 10 months anniversary Wink. Envy not loosing the baby weight this time, I have a wardrobe full of thing which don't fit. Confused

SB did you try the orabase? DD2 getting worse again but then teeth number 12 is slowly coming through. I thought it was a myth though the nappy rash/teething relationship. Will probably go to the doc again Confused

We are running out of space on this thread, we will have to open the birthday one a bit early?

Stangirl · 06/01/2011 08:12

I'll just put in a bit more of the advice the Kings person told us about brushing teeth. She said not to rinse out the mouth after brushing - this is for both adults and children - as the toothpaste should be left in contact with the teeth to be most effective. Personally I couldn't do this. Oh - and the terrible picture of an 18mth old was due to being given constant Ribena in a bottle. BTW when I wrote "chloride" earlier I meant "flouride". I live in Lambeth which has one of the highest levels of child tooth decay in the country - hence why the special visiting team was set up.

I totally agree about the development rush at the moment. Everyday DD seems to be that bit more stable on her feet and about to walk. She can climb to the top of the stairs and claps her hands when asked to and does a high five when I put my hand up to the side of her head. This also causes her to laugh - which is fab. Unfortunately a stern "no" also makes her laugh like a drain and she is obsessed with hair pulling. It's like she's almost human now,

BG yes I'm showing already - probably look 5mths gone rather than the 3 I am. Am already back in maternity trousers for comfort. I did lose weight at first as my morning sickness was rough and I had food poisoning - but my waistline still got bigger.

SconesForTea · 06/01/2011 08:26

Morning everyone! No time to stay, DD wants to be put down for her morning nap early today.

InmaculadaConcepcion · 06/01/2011 09:28

Morning Scones!

Thanks for your input on the teeth-brushing discussion, mamaloco - that explains why they discourage toothpaste here, then. I'm with you about the fighting. DD only has limited patience with the teeth-brushing, but we're getting it done everyday to some extent, so that's something!

DD's getting much more adventurous now, so the baby-proofing has moved up a gear.

As a result, more injuries and tears as well, inevitably. Yesterday she slid forward and landed on her face, putting her top teeth through her lip, poor little mite Sad. Good job babies (and indeed toddlers) bounce back so quickly, heh?!

We've had the first couple of "No's" said firmly by Mama and (so far) obedience by DD. She was upset the first time, so I've modified my tone so it's firm-but-gentle and she looks at me concerned, but doesn't cry and complies with whatever prohibition it is. Mostly. It won't last, I suspect!

Well, I've finished reading Toddler Taming and I highly recommend it. Very practical, reassuring, good advice. As I said before, I doubt I'll follow it word-for-word, but it had a lot of useful stuff and I feel a bit more forewarned and forearmed for the next stage now.

Hello, Happy New Year all.

You have all been so busy!

Sadly I have been struggling again.

DP and I not getting on, DD not sleeping well or eating (spitting stuff out)and my anxiety has returned.

I go back to work on Tuesday next week and DD has had two taster sessions at the childminders. Didn't go too well.

She cried and threw up at the two lunch times and this is having a knock effect on tea time. Crying when put in high chair.

CM managed to get her down for a nap she did 55 mins. I was glad of that though as I didn't think she would sleep at all.

I love DD more than anything but don't think I have enjoyed being a mum due to everything going wrong.
Every stage has thrown a challenge that takes so long to overcome (or not)
DP says I have wasted the year.

On a separate issue I am arranging for DD to be seen by a cranial osteopath. Due to the fact she took 49 hrs to be born and delivered by forceps, there is evidence to suggest this may affect her abilty to stay asleep. Anything worth a go eh?!

Hugs and waves to all.
