Hi all - radio silence from me for so long, been keeping up with thread on my iphone during feeds, but not yet had chance to post. So finally updated the list below with my little Arlo.

Also, you might all be beyond birth stories now, but mine was fairly horrendous, hope you don't mind me sharing!

So, I'd thought my waters might be leaking on the Wednesday night, but really only v.
small amount of fluid so wasn't sure. Then saw MW on Friday morning, and she detected heart rate deceleration, so sent me in to hospital for monitoring. I ended up staying in overnight, during which my waters definitely broke! They also said I was having tightenings, which I couldn't feel, but sometimes seemed to be causing LO's heartrate to drop a bit, although not every time. But they sent me home finally on Sat morning, to come back in on Sunday 8am for induction.

So, bright and early on the Sunday we arrived, only to find a full delivery unit, and a lot of waiting around. They finally started monitoring heartrate, and gave me the gel to soften cervix. 6 hours later, cervix still not soft, but they started me on the syntocinon anyway because it'd been so long since waters going. At this point, contractions started up horrendously, and heartrate began dropping with contractions again. I had had visions of active birth, squatting, balls etc. but heartrate seemed to drop less if I lay on my right hand side. So I did. For the WHOLE labour. Being monitored the whole time. Havoc on the hips. Because of heartrate dropping, they kept reducing the rate of the drip and slowing the whole process. Was on gas & air, and TENS, but they recommended epidural to help slow contractions which was AMAZING. Could still walk around to pee if needed, but no pain. So slightly disturbed night!

8.30am Sunday then, still not a lot happening, sent DH to get some breakfast as he pretty much hadn't eaten the previous day. Guess what, just at this point, heart rate drops more worryingly and I get rushed to theatre. DH had just paid for his breakfast, but had to drop it without a bite and run when I called. Got as far as full epidural, completely numb, and surgeon poised with knife when the heartrate steadied, and because I was by now 8cm, they decided I could go back to delivery and keep trying. Argh! Was so scary, I was shaking like anything.

So was then back to lying on side and monitoring. With the threat of C-sect still looming if heartrate were to drop again. Fast forward to about 2pm and they finally decided that I was dilated enough to start pushing (and I needed to by then!), and that with help of ventouse they could whip him out quick enough if heartrate probs persisted.

So finally pushed him out at 3pm, and turned out he had cord round his neck twice, which was what was causing the compression and heartrate dropping every time I contracted. So he got whipped away and sorted out, including chest x-rays and bloods because of meconium. I meanwhile had torn quite badly and they then spent almost an hour sewing me up.

To top it all, I'd had a temperature at one point during the labour (surprising?!) and with the other risk factors - meconium, tearing, early rupture - both Arlo and I were put on antiobiotics. Meaning I had to stay in hospital with him for 3 more days. Which was horrendous - after no sleep since the previous Friday, I then was put on a ward full of screaming newborns and told to rest as much as possible! Um, hello, it is IMPOSSIBLE to sleep in that environment. So finally, a week after originally going into hospital we got discharged.

Would say we were doing fine, but then I came up in a horrendous rash after about a week, all over my tummy, boobs, back and thighs. Midwife decided to scare me by saying it looked like measles! But turned out to be a reaction to the antibiotics. Which means I'm allergic to something in one of them, but who knows what!

Anyway, all better now. Arlo is gorgeous. After the traumatic birth, feeding was a bit slow to get off the ground, but now he is well up for it, and at 2 weeks had gone from 8lb7oz at birth to 8lb14oz.

Been enjoying reading all the gossip during feeds. Sorry for the long post, but good to get it out of the system!!

Don't know if Skye is keeping up with the thread any more - she has an Arlo too, and I wondered what the reaction to the name had been? Our families love it but were a bit bemused about where it came from and had never come across it before. First question we always get is, 'that's interesting, where's that from?' We're sticking with old english, but wish I had a more interesting story than I found it in a list of baby names and just liked it!

Finally, Arlo seems to pant/rapid breathing quite a lot - mostly when he wants feeding which is pretty much all the time! I've read that they shouldn't normally breathe more than 60 breaths a minute, but I don't think there's anything wrong with him, he just gets excited at the prospect of milk! Anyone else have this?

Dixie do you watch hollyoaks? There's a new character on there called Arlo! Your experience sounds awful but at least all was ok and little arlo is doing well.

I'm sat watching A Bugs Life for about the 10000000000000th time since Olly was born. We're having cuddles on the sofa after a busy morning ironing!

As for chocolate Sassy I've really had to stop. I didn't have the bf excuse! I've bought a dress for christmas parties & its a wee bit tight! I WILL wear it so the chocolate has to stop!

Dixiebell · 20/10/2010 13:12

No, don't watch hollyoaks, but that's interesting. I think it's a name becoming popular now, but weird that I picked it having never come across it before.

One other incident, we took Arlo out in his iCandy for only about the third time, went over a bump and the wheel came off! Luckily Dh was holding handle tight so all okay and we managed to fix it enough to get home. Johhn Lewis have given us a loan one while they get on to iCandy, but how rubbish is that, especially considering the price!

Oh, and also funnily enough (not at the time), on our way home from the hospital with Arlo, the car exhaust suddenly started making a horrendous noise and I was convinced we were going to break down with a new baby in the back. Lucky go home and car now fixed, but am I jinxed or what?!

cinnamongreyhound · 20/10/2010 18:10

I've had the odd leak beaditAli but I'm almost certain it's because I haven't put it on properly in my middle of the night stupour!

You are doing really well sassy34264 and I know how you feel, I had pain from when ds1 was 5 days old and I totally healed and was pain free when he was 10 weeks. I cried sooooo much but was determined to make it work. It's been so easy this time around it makes you realise how rewarding breastfeeding can be and even after the 10 week mark with ds1 I started to enjoy it. The weight loss side is great and I put on weight with every feed ds1 dropped, I'm not good at regulating what I eat normally! I have been 9 1/2 stone and I have been 18 1/2 stone in my life, am about 12 at the moment.

I read and post on my iphone a lot of the time during night feeds too Dixiebell! Your birth experience sounds a lot like my first but without the heartrate scare, it must have been very frightening for you.

Today was a nightmare for me, ds1 has had a temp since Saturday evening and I know feel very bad for leaving it this long but he seemed much better Monday and I was at uni yesterday. I got an emergency appointment at 12, gave the kids an early lunch in case we were a while. Ended up waiting one hour with 4 children, then off to chemist. Got home in time for 5th child arriving, ds1 kept crying as he felt so awful (has tonsillitis and ear infection), Luke was crying for a feed while I was trying to sort another 2 out and the only one to have a nap cried constantly from when I woke her up until her mum arrived :(

beaditAli · 20/10/2010 21:14

cinnamon that sound like a very hectic day! Shock I probably have been a bit slack with the nappies in the middle of the night though Jack is definitely filling his size 3s so I'll stick with them for now. At least in the nights and I'll use my 2s up during the day.
Poor you Dixie I was thinking that no one could be as unlucky as I felt in hospital but that sounds truly scary! Hope you're feeling ok about it now. Luckily my awful experiences were due to rubbish staff rather than health/baby problems. My HVs couldn't believe I wasn't more affected by my experience and were amazed I was cracking jokes about it all. Really hope you've managed to hide it deep in the back of your mind!
sassy you're making me see Crunchies in the back of my eye lids! Grin mmmmmmmmm nom nom!

patito · 20/10/2010 21:17

Hi all

Have been meaning to catch up again for many a night now but by the time I get both DCs down Im so knackered that I cant be bothered to do anything else.

Maia´s spots have cleared up, Ill never know if it was the expensive oil or that they went on their own accord (like to believe after paying so much that it was the oil!!).

Sorry to hear those of you suffering with BF, especially Sassy you have all my admiration for continuing.

Maia also grunts and snuffles alot, in one baby book Ive got it says that this is normal and its due to their immature respirtory system and that their nose/wind pipe is still very small. I dont pick her up unless she gets very squiggly or starts to cry.

MammyG · 20/10/2010 21:32

Jealous of all the weight loss. Am bfing and nothing happening! Only gained 28lbs during pregnancy, had a 7lbs baby and still have 20lbs hanging around! am so cross! Too small for anything maternity ish and way too big for my own clothes. Phoebe is 4 weeks today and I havent lost an ounce below that! Grrr

bellabelly · 21/10/2010 00:23

MammyG - I am now a stone under my pre-preg weight and still can't fit into my pre-preg trousers, I reckon it takes ages for our body shapes to get back to normal. I definitely still look a bit preggers. I never got back to my pre-pregnancy weight after having the boys and was hopng that breastfeeding for longer this time would magically make me thin but my weight loss has now really stalled. I am eating an awful lot of cake and biscuits so can't really complain Grin

Dixiebell · 21/10/2010 06:32

Hi all, Arlo just slept about 6 hours through the night 12-6. Amazing! How early are they meant to do that? He's 2 weeks + 3. he did kick his covers right off, and I'm worried he'll get really cold as the weather turns. Does anyone use those baby sleeping bags? Can't remember if it's okay to use them this young or if they recommend not to...

Arlo doesn't like to be in his Moses basket during the day. Soon as I put him down, he wakes himself then wants more food. Felt like I fed constantly yesterday. He sleeps better in his bouncy chair during the day, but is it okay to let him sleep in that for hours at a time?

Arlo 2+3

cinnamongreyhound · 21/10/2010 07:24

I use them, they're fine as long as they are over 7lb Dixiebell. I used them with ds1 until he was in a bed! And yes bouncy chair is fine, ds1 hated laying down so he spent a lot of time in his until his bottom touched the floor when he was in it. I was told by my midwife not to let Luke sleep longer than 6 hours at a time as he slept all night the first 2 nights but hasn't since so be thankful for one night!

DS1 was up once last night at 11 (by which time I'd been asleep for 1 1/2hrs!) and Luke only once at 4.30 Grin but I think he may have conjunctivitis.

comixminx · 21/10/2010 08:23

I've got a gro-bag sleeping bag as a hand me down - haven't checked the sizing on it but now that it's got cold I'll dig it out and give it a go, I think. It was -1 last night apparently - and in our bedroom it was 17 degrees overnight, where previously it's been around 21. Quite a noticeable drop!

7 weeks today

OP posts:
sassy34264 · 21/10/2010 10:04

I got the babies sleeping bags from Asda- 2.5tog. I think they are brilliant. They didn't do them when dd was little.

dixie Mine sleep better upright too. I tried the bouncy chairs but at the time they were too small and kept falling over to the side. I use their car seats instead.

Happy to report there is a marked improvement during feeding. It's not painless but it's not so painful that i'm dreading it. Not sure if it's the nipple cream that's helping or the thrush is going. Only time will tell. Enjoying the respite nonetheless. :)

My friend is on her way now with her 10month old boy and we are off to Bygonetimes for a few hours. It's a big building with thousands and thousands of old items- anything from little trinkets to edwardian wardrobes. I'm looking for a reclaimed fireplace for my new house (which i'm still not bloody in yet!) There is a cafe to, so looking forward to a hot chocolate. It's all rock n roll in my life! Wink

patito · 21/10/2010 10:43

Morning

Maia also slept from 12-6 woke for a couple of hours and then slept again till 10!!!! Must say Im like a new person now, long may this continue (cue being up all night to night). And Ds managed a good nights sleep and is now out swimming lessons, meaning a bit of time for me to catch up again.

We´ve just had a family visit which was a bit weird, my parents have seperated since DS was born so they all came out sans Dad and then he came out a week later on his own. On my Mums stay over she got ill and couldn´t take her scheduled flight and ended up going back on the flight my Dad arrived on . Confused But was good to see them all, as Im not heading back till Feb at least. Sad I love where I live but wish I could pop home more often, Ive not been there since Easter.

They did bring me a few packets of malted milk biscuits to be getting on with which always helps Grin

cinnamongreyhound · 21/10/2010 12:48

That must be difficult patito :(

Glad to hear things are improving sassy34264!! Hope you're having a nice day.

Luke now has conjunctivitis so I have made another trip to the GP, only waited 25mins today though! So both my boys are now on antibiotics for 5 days :(

saoirse86 · 21/10/2010 14:13

Last night Orlaith slept for 7 out of 12 hours, waking up 5 times. It felt like a good night compared to the last 3 weeks and I'm seriously hoping it'll continue like this and keep getting better.
She sleeps much better sitting up too. I've tried propping her up a bit at night to help with all the mucus she still has on her chest, but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

On a separate note, Orlaith seems to be growing more hair but not on the top of her head. It's like she's got a receeding hairline. Meanwhile I seem to be growing facial hair. It's kind of downy and a bit darker than normal. Please someone tell me it's just hormones and will go away!! Confused Otherwise maybe I'll keep growing it and somehow transfer it to Orlaith's head. Smile

Chelle1986 · 21/10/2010 16:14

Hi Ladies - looking for some advice please. Oliver is feeding well still - taking 5 and a half ounces every 3-4 hours, sometimes 5 hours in the night.

However his temper tantrums during feeding are getting horredous! I am talking proper face reddening, screaming and freaking out every time I take the bottle away to wind him! He is on infacol for mild colic and this has helped the sreaming between feeds - but the screaming during winding is now getting so bad that he's bringing up at least 2 ounces of the bottle sometimes because he has got himself in such a paddy!

Nothing I do seems to soothe him - any advice?!

Other than that things are going great - he gets weighed tomorrow which should be interesting as you can literally see his face piling on the beef!

Thanks.xxx

Oliver Daniel - 3wks 4 days.

sassy34264 · 21/10/2010 16:53

chelle My DD used to scream her head off when i tried to wind her during a feed. I just stopped doing it and winded her at the end. I figured she was probably gulping down more wind when she screamed.

Cinnamon Thanks, i did have a nice day- saw lots of things that I want for the new house. Will be going again very soon with DP and his lovely bank card! :o

bananastew · 21/10/2010 21:20

chelle I was going to suggest the same as sassy what happens if you don't wind? Have you tried gripe water? I find infacol a bit too harsh could it be that although it helps bring his wind up & settles him inbetween, its causing him discomfort during feeding?!

When do I admit I'm no longer a size 8 & trying to fit into clothes that are too small & start bying a bigger size??? I'm going out on Sat & nothing fits!!!

Oliver had his 6 week check today, a week late. he's now 10lb 13oz, 56cm long and I've forgotten his head circumference!! my pnd check consisted of being shouted at across a foom full of other mums & babies "do you feel alright?" Good job I am cos that wouldn't have got to the bottom of anything!

Oliver 7wks 2days!

MammyG · 21/10/2010 21:42

Sassy - glad things are looking up. Where is this wonderful big shop? Was on to DH about travelling to your side of the pond next year to hunt some antiques and different knick knacks for house we are going building. Not much variety here.
Chelle - leave winding til the end. My boys did not take a break during their bottles. They actually took in too much air with all the crying so left it til the end. If you dont get anything out of him in the first few mins of winding lie him down and give him a few mins before trying again. Over winding causes the bubbles to go down and can lead to colic like spells later.
Phoebe is still very erratic but last night was only and hour up. so thats a change. Also in the morns she will not settle back until I bring her into bed with me. Im not comfortable with this after what happened. I cant relax. Still she is as good as gold the rest of the time hard to complain. Am very tired tho and the juggle is wearing. Oh for a holiday!!!

MammyG · 21/10/2010 21:43

Or better yet a night nanny!! for a few nights anyway.

Hi all :)

Well I'm finding it hard from about 6pm till about 12.00am, Maria-Ann has her 6pm feed but because she has colic really bad at this time she tries taking her bottle but then will scream and bring her legs up. From this time it's really difficult to get her feed down her and it can take up to an hour or two and then she leaves some so will wake an hr or so earlier for her nxt feed. Tried everything I can think of, gripe water, infacol, colief, bath, colic bottles, baby massage but nothing seems to work. I have even change formula. The screaming can last for hrs and sometimes really find it hard to comfort her :(
She does do the screaming during the day not every day but it seems not as bad in the morning.

On the plus side I'm now weighing in at 8 stone 11. I was 10 stone 8 still wearing my maternity jeans as my regular jeans are too small. Hopeing in a couple of weeks I will be back in them and then I will have something nice to wear:)

Hi Water sprite. I know a few people that use cranio sacral therapy for colic and found it wonderful. My eldest was terrible from 7pm til after nine but it stopped after a few weeks. It was torture while it lasted tho. Also try to avoid over stimulation during the day - not passed around to too many visitors etc. It helped if he had a relatively calm day. good luck

Dixiebell · 23/10/2010 06:35

Hi all. Anyone have a panting baby? Arlo seems to get very excited before and during feeding, and at other times too, and breathes so fast. It doesn't seem to be laboured, and he's well, alert, feeding well...not sure if I should be worried that his breathing rate is well above 60 per minute so much of the time...

Another 12-6 night last night, after causing a fair bit of trouble by feeding constantly from about 8.30 till midnight!

Being a useless mummy by having not put washing on early enough , we've run out of babygros and got only ones too big or too small..and we have visitors today! Need to get a tumble dryer...
