summerhols I agree with LaT - trust your instincts and if you're worried then get her seen. I also have snuffly babies, DD1 was constantly snuffly from 8 weeks until 6 months so I'm just hoping i'm not in it for the long haul again with the snuffles. Saline drops are really handy to help them clear enough to feed and this snot sucker is brilliant too.

Also, try to keep her upright as much as possible. Either in a bouncy chair or snuggled up to you. Both of mine have spent the odd night in the bouncy chair when they've been so snuffly they just can't lie down at all. And bring her in the room when you have a shower as the humidity helps clear a blocked nose too.

MonkeyMargot · 02/08/2010 16:45

minimoon we should try and organise a London meet-up again.

summerhols you could also try elevating the mattress at the head end using a rolled up towel. And Karvol Vaporisers which plug into the wall are very good (though I can't recall whether they are suitable from birth or not...check in your pharmacy).
good advice from greensnail - keep her upright as much as poss.

All is well here. trying to organise things ready for a trip to France in 4 weeks time. we are also going to have a 2nd attempt at selling our house whilst on holiday. This means I need to be super-organised and leave the house spotless on the day we go on hols. Hmm - not easy. Still, desperate for more space now we are 5 plus dog, so we shall try again.

latrucha · 02/08/2010 19:10

I believe Karvol is from three months. IIRC from dd.

greensnail · 02/08/2010 19:37

Yes, Karvol is from 3 months. Baby nose clear do a room vapour which is suitable from birth here. I've not found it particularly helpful, but it might help you. I got mine from waitrose but i'm sure you can get it other places too.

Summerhols · 03/08/2010 09:40

Thanks Ladies for the advice, spent all of last night with her on me upright as she was so bunged up she was getting into a right tiss (so now I'm suffering from having about 3 hours sleep). But she seems a little better this morning, though still not herself. Will go to the chemist to get some Saline drops.

GibberingGinger · 03/08/2010 10:21

Minimoo, I moved my two out into their own room weeks ago. However there is a single bed in their room - the hot bed! Which we use on th nights when the boys are not settling and someone needs to rock them/replace dummy/wind them etc. One night the bed was used in shifts by me, my mum, and DH, hence the name hot bed. Nothing to do with any passion (I would really feel odd doing it in a room with the boys!) And any deed doing that I have been doing with DH is cause it was his birthday and he has been very supportive and I was getting tired of his hopeful eyes and wishful comments!

Off to visit mum and dad with the 3 kids next week. DH is staying behind to work and get a few relaxing evenings of DVDs and computer games and full nights sleep! Lucky him. But I'll get loads of help at my parents too so we all win

Best wishes everyone for the upcoming vaccinations. DTs had theirs and were fine, but its still pretty horrible to get done to tiny babies

MonkeyMargot · 03/08/2010 13:21

gibbering hope you have a good rest at your parents and that your DH appreciates the time off! My DH is still in the spare room, and long may it continue I say. I love having our bed to myself!
On the subject of resuming nuptials, DH and I finally did the deed last night after a period of abstinence of around 6 months..! So he has a smile on his face today which is good.

summerhols hope your LO's snotty nose improves soon.

Hi all haven't had chance to catch up really but thought I'd post a quick note to say hi and hope everyone is coping ok.

I'm still on road to recovery after emergency c section 5 weeks ago which was followed by wound infection and was feeling better but now think I've done too much and pulled something - hoping it is only pulled stomach muscle and not another infection. Although it's not in my wound but slightly higher up and off to one side so guess it could be the internal side of things rather than scar but who knows! Anyone else suffer like this or have c section recovery stories? How are other people healing?

Corey is now gaining weight but had to go over to bottle feeding as wasn't producing enough milk to satisfy him. He is soooo much better and more settled now he's on the bottle and I almost wish I'd done it sooner rather than putting up with the constant crying cos he was hungry!

Anyway he is currently flat out after his feed nearly 2 hours ago which is great as means I can catch up on here and sit with my feet up and watch tv etc. Trying really hard to take it easy today in the hopes that if it is a pulled muscle then it will help it to get better and morra will be a better day

Corey is smiling and gurgling more which is lovely as he is interacting more with us which makes it all worthwhile.

Anyway hope all of us are slowly moving towards more sleep rather than having nocturnal babies

MrsDmamee · 03/08/2010 18:44

earlyonemorning Your welcome, hope our babies start sleeping better soon.

bluesnowfalcon i could have written your post myself, im also recovering from em-cs.

my 2nd one, and im finding it much slower to feel normal this time round.
Also had infection in wound and one side of wound feels pulled and sore if i overdo it which i did at weekend mopping floors.(dont ask me why i did that).

Just want to feel physically like me again.

bluesnowfalcon · 03/08/2010 18:58

Glad it isn't just me MrsD i even started a thread in childbirth about healing after c section - you might wanna take a look cos it's not just us!

I stupidly cleaned house on Saturday, cooked loads of meals on Sunday and then went out for the day yesterday also been lifting car seat and buggy etc - think I'm stupid and have done too much after cs but was feeling human and normal at the end of last week

Hope you feel better soon

whenwillisleepagain · 03/08/2010 20:10

earlyonemorning I too have a baby who does not sleep during the day. 7am-8pm with one 40 min nap is seeming to be Alice's pattern. Was beginning to worry she has something wrong with her - so you have cheered me up. She's pretty cheery till late afternoon, then it all goes a bit miserable. Getting her out early in buggy - by about 10 - seems to alter things, and she slept for 2 hrs yesterday. Think this is maybe what I get for co-sleeping and offering her my boob a lot. But figure the trade-off, enough sleep to be semi-rational, is worth it.

bsf and mrsd will look at the childbirth section - sorry you've both had a time of it.

Alice has chesty cough, for 6 days now. I ended up taking her to GP today after worrying that as 2nd time mum I should have more of a grip on when, and when not to seek advice. GP said I was right to take her - it's, as I thought, viral, and may take some time to settle. Need to go back if not better in a week.

CantSleepWontSleep · 03/08/2010 21:35

Hello all. Just a quick post to mark my place tonight, as ds didn't settle until gone midnight last night, so I didn't get much sleep, and will be attempting an early night tonight as he is sleeping now (though will doubtless wake as soon as I take him up!)

LaT - I am very lax about these things and probably wouldn't worry about the poo.

OP posts:
MonkeyMargot · 03/08/2010 21:55

Csws am chortling at your choice of word "lax" when discussing loose bowel movements...

madamefreckle · 03/08/2010 23:04

On the subject of bowel movements, has anyone got anything to say about very green ones?! I'm hoping it's just Emma's reaction to the amoxicillin i've been on for mastitis. And LaT - 'extremely loose' - (just like coloured water with some grainy bits in it...sorry if TMI) describes all of Emma's since about day 4 and she seems completely fine...h/v has said it can be completely normal.

Monkeymargot - I'd be up for a spot of scrabble! The massive cushion sounds like the business. I must say it sounds like it makes much more sense to feed at the same time. Do they take roughly the same time to feed? Can you see different characters coming out yet? I'm totally fascinated by twins!

MonkeyMargot · 04/08/2010 09:46

Ooh madamefreckle hooray - email me at rswinfen at gmail dot com with your name and I'll send you FB invite.

Green ones can mean too much foremilk and not enough hind milk, but not conclusively. are they always green ones? there are probably better people on here to advise (CSWS).
From my own experience though, since our Maternity nurse came and got me feeding for a full 40 minutes on the breast, all greenies have been eliminated from the monkey household.

DT1 is larger than DT2 and hence always feeds for a little bit longer, but all in all it works really well feeding them together. And yes, they have very different personalities already.
DT1 (Atticus) is the King of the jungle - he is bigger, louder, more demanding.
DT2 (Rafferty) is a little lamb. Very laid back, takes it all in his stride, a total sweetie.

We don't yet know for sure whether they are identical or no-id; we were hoping it would be obvious but it really isn't so we will probably book them in for a DNA test at the hospital soon to find out for sure. It's getting a bit silly as it's the first question people ask and we don't know the answer.

whenwillisleepagain · 04/08/2010 14:53

there's currently a discussion about green poo on a bf thread - the one called 'help me to keep bf' or similar - sorry, not to provide the shortcut

fillybuster · 04/08/2010 16:37

oh dear, it took me about 3 days to catch up and now I can barely remember anything, so apologies in advance for what is likely to be a very random post...!

Mia is now 6 weeks and we're all agreed (me, DH, DS and DD1) that she can stay Although (in an echo of everyone else) only on condition I start getting some more sleep very soon!!

Actually, she's doing well (look away now LaT and others), but between her and the other dcs there does seem to be something to wake me at least once or twice every night as well as Mia's feed. But she is only feeding once a night, and has made it from 11-5/6/7 a couple of times now, so I think there might be a light at the end of the tunnel. One day... No trouble with daytime sleeps and feeds - she's the original clockwork baby and is doing a 3 hourly baby whisperer (eat, activity, sleep) routine bang on cue

Mia started smiling about a week ago, which was damn good timing as it followed pretty much her worst night ever, and I was just about to stick up a sign in the local newsagents window offering her free to a good home . She does great little gurgles and is particularly good at grinning at DD1 who is now her biggest fan (phew!) and increasingly proud of her 'big sister' role

No rumpy-pumpy goings on here yet, but DH is also making wistful comments and its our wedding anniversary tomorrow (aarggh...no card...panic...panic...)...so something may have to happen! Actually its also my 6 week check, so I guess I should look into the whole thing - I'm also thinking about a coil as I dont like the minipill and tend to forget to take it half the time anyway. I'll report back

We're still suffering from major wind issues, and heavily reliant on infacol, but Mia is starting to get the hang of occasionally burping or farting, so again, I have hope for the future!

Poos all normal, but very loose and/or green are all par for the course - Mia's have been very very liquid recently but thats probably because I've been eating huge quantities of figs and stuff in a bid to avoid constipation post-delivery!

OK, off to feed...I'm so impressed at the one handed typing that some of you can achieve, but reading and radio 4 are about the extent of my multitasking!!

latrucha · 04/08/2010 18:35

Don't worry Filly - things have settled down the last couple of nights and last night he only woke to feed once! (Cue LaT having a terrible night as we've been out lots today...)

fillybuster · 04/08/2010 19:57

OK, I've got some questions...

How many 3rd time mums have taken the babies to be checked/weighed etc since birth? (Just trying to figure out if I'm just as shit laid back as everyone else or totally pants too busy?

Now the little ones are getting more alert and cute, what do you do with them during their 'awake' times? Do you play and generally interact with them, b) stick them on a playmat and let them get on with it c) other? (Again, I'm worried that there's a bit too much of b) and c) where other = lying in buggy/sitting in car going places to do chores etc or visiting Tesco!!)

How much do those of you with older dcs get them to entertain/rock the baby? Do you leave them to get on with it unsupervised? (DD1 is 2.5 and is loving looking after Baby Mia but I haven't left the room much...yet...)

Are any of you who are bf-ing thinking about losing weight yet? If you are, do you have a plan or a fixed diet? I need help!! I've got 1.5 stone to shift, none of my clothes (not even my 'fat' ones) fit and I am determined to get out of my maternity jeans soon - and I've given the rest of my mat clothes away so am utterly stuck at the moment!!!

Right...I think that's it for now...

greensnail · 04/08/2010 20:47

filly we're doing much more of b and c here than we did with DD1, but i'm reassuring myself that its fine as she gets the extra stimulation of seeing DD1 run about etc.

DD1 also loves to look after baby Alice. We let her rock her chair and attempt to put her dummy in. I do leave the 2 of them together so some of this takes place without me in the room, but we only live in a 2 bed maisonette so i'm never far away and can quickly intervene if I hear tears. DD1 is only 19 months though and I doubt she'd try to pick Alice up or anything too dangerous yet!

Alice licked DD1 on the nose today which was very funny. DD1 didn't quite know what to make of it

NizzyNoodles · 04/08/2010 20:52

On the green poo thing I've always been told it's due to wind - but that could just be an old wives tale/urban myth.

We're having more awake time here - so far mainly in the daytime - sometimes he only sleeps for 30 minutes between feeds and other times he sleeps from the end of this bottle until I change his bottom to wake him up for the next one!

One of us is sleeping in Sam's room at the moment (usually me!) and the other is in our bed. Although DH has done a couple of nights with him. Not sure how long this will go on for - he feels too little to leave on his own just yet - but maybe soon as I miss my own bed!

Filly I've taken Sam once to be weighed but only because it was convenient and they'd made a specific note in his red book about getting him weighed once discharged from the midwife. I'll probably only take him again when I'm curious. I think I probably do too much of b) and c) too but he seems quite happy watching everything that's going on. I don't let the older ones do much on their own and I don't leave the room for long but they do like to sit by him and sing him songs/talk to him/pull faces/hold his hand.

Sorry if I've missed anything else!

CantSleepWontSleep · 04/08/2010 21:10

filly - haven't taken him to be weighed at all, so last weigh in (which hv forgot to write in book - just plotted vaguely on graph) was at 13 days.

We're not having a lot of properly awake time yet, so hard to answer your next question, but he does have a few mins on gym occasionally, sometimes with me pottering about doing stuff, and sometimes with me sitting with him (often just to protect him from his siblings).

Older dc don't do any rocking etc as he is essentially always being held by me or else is miserable, so rocking just doesn't happen! I happily would let dd (4.5) do stuff if he would like it, and I do leave her in the room with him unattended, which I wouldn't do with ds (21 months), who would either kick, hit or quite likely sit or stand on him, after a loving stroke first!

I think that I'm still slowly losing weight post birth without trying at the moment - think I'm about 6 or 7 lbs heavier than when I got pregnant (although had several stone to lose already at that point), but hopefully that will drop in the next few weeks. Will be relying more on the tandem feeding and being too busy to eat too much to help me lose weight, rather than any specific plan. I just can't do dieting and dairy free at the same time as well as managing 3 dc inc small baby.

Have had my 'mothers help' for 3 days so far, and it's been great! She is mostly playing with the older 2 so that I can concentrate on ds2, but she gives me a hand preparing meals if I need it, and clears up after we have eaten (or whilst we are eating at dinner time), so I don't have to worry about a load of washing up at 9 or 10 o clock or whenever I eventually get J to sleep. I do have to do the last couple of hours inc bedtime by myself though, as dh is away again (and looks set to be every week between now and Christmas).

I foolishly thought that people generally knew even before birth whether twins were going to be identical or not Margot!

OP posts:
MonkeyMargot · 04/08/2010 21:17

filly i'm with you on the desire to shift some of the baby weight. I also have 1.5 stone to lose - and though the first 3 stone off fell off, I've totally plateaued and have been the same weight for 2 weeks now.

definitely more b than c here too. In fact what constitutes entertainment is having a sit in their bouncy chairs whilst DD spins the toys on them and rocks the chairs whilst I fix DD's lunch.
I do leave her in the room with the DTs now, but am only in the kitchen next door.

I haven't been to get the babies weighed at all and probably won't. There are always opportunities to get them weighed e.g. at the 6-week checkup and all the immunisation appts, so won't bother to go to drop-in clinics.
