am I alone in being very heartened that the alquaida operative is not being deported?

because we absolutely should not deport anyone under any circumstance who we know will be tortured.

a victory for justice and human rights today imo.

So what are we doing by letting him stay?
What is he 'message' there?

The Guardian readers may bleat about how noble and cilvilised we are (ie compared to your lot) but what do yuo think this says to him?

mumblechum · 18/05/2010 22:31

Perhaps he should have thought of that (risk of torture in Pakistan) before he came to the UK to plot murder on our citizens.

I think the court was utterly wrong.

Heathcliffscathy · 18/05/2010 22:32

it's not about a 'message' moondog. it's about rule of law. you know, that thing that protects all of us?

Alouiseg · 18/05/2010 22:32

Greensleeves: How dare you assume I'm thick because I don't want people who were plotting to murder our fellow countrymen being protected in this country at the taxpayers expense?

I utterly resent your assumption and hope that you reflect upon your assumption.

anonandlikeit · 18/05/2010 22:33

They have been deemed a threat to national security, that includes each & every one of us.
A statement of such magnitude would not be made if it was not more beneficial for the security services to have that information in the public domain.
In the case of terrorist activity a conviction of murder only occurs after a terrorist attack IN this case the security services are fighting both the terrorists & the human rights legislation in order to keep us safe.

moondog · 18/05/2010 22:33

'rule of law'

Ah, a phrase beloved of the smug.

Heathcliffscathy · 18/05/2010 22:33

mumblechum it's not about him, it's about us, and our society.

he's under a heavy duty control order, and maybe just maybe, this changes the hearts and minds of any young muslim UK citizens frustrated and angry at the state of the world. not holding out much hope for that but you never know.

'hearts and minds'

Heathcliffscathy · 18/05/2010 22:34

yeah, bit misguided given that it's roots are in vietnam (on the wrong team). i'll give you that

anonandlikeit · 18/05/2010 22:36

Exactly Sophable, our society that we all strive to protect HE on the other hand has no regard for our society or our rule of law.

Our Society does have the right to be protected against terrorists & those linked with them

mumblechum · 18/05/2010 22:37

Some people deserve to be tortured.

Well, a bit.

God that Chakrabarti woman is so bloody smug.
She needs putting into a half Nelson and being frogmarched into a dark alley.

Alouiseg · 18/05/2010 22:44

With you Mumblechum.

Shami Chakrabarti should stop defending these vile potential mass murderers too.

There is enough evidence to show that this person is a danger to the public.

longfingernailspaintedblue · 18/05/2010 22:46

No-one deserves to be tortured but we need not go out of our way to protect the huamn rights of foreign terrorists.

Pakistan is a democracy, albeit a borderline basketcase of one. The authorities cooperate with us on intelligence matters. We are happy to deport to America, which also has the death penalty, providing the authorities promise to waive it. We should do the same here.

Heathcliffscathy · 18/05/2010 22:47

sami chakrabati on this on newsnight right now...

Heathcliffscathy · 18/05/2010 22:48

you should thank your lucky stars she's out there fighting this corner...there but for the grace go you!

OP posts:
Greensleeves · 18/05/2010 22:49

yep, you definitely sound a bit fick

We don't send people to be tortured or executed because we have reached a certain level of civilisation. This is important, IMO. And not negotiable.

MollieO · 18/05/2010 22:50

As someone who has been directly affected by UK terrorism I would welcome their deportation. It would give our overstretched security services two less people to have to monitor. As far as I am concerned my human rights and that of my ds are important too. Their like have already had a go at leaving ds an orphan and I'd rather they didn't succeed.

Coolfonz · 18/05/2010 22:51

Unbelievable. Have any of you actually read anything about the case? On either side?

You are all embarrassing yourselves.

What has the guy been convicted of? Nothing. There was no evidence against these guys. There were 12 of them no? They already went to trial. Did you see that?

Mi5 are using "secret evidence" that they will not even show to the defence lawyers. But it isn't really "evidence" as no one knows what it is.

Imagine if that happened in Iran. The Revolutionary Guard having "secret evidence" in a trial. So the media follow a narrative already set out for them, there is no evidence these guys did anything. If there is "secret evidence" use it in a court of law.

And you all follow on from it, even the ones supporting the decision today haven't bothered to read anything about the case.

And now these guys, not all of whom are even part of this deportation trial, will be put under control orders, again with no evidence.

What is it about law and democracy you don't fucking get?

Fucking dumbsnet...jesus...

Heathcliffscathy · 18/05/2010 22:53

coolfonz...it's a disgrace, but i'm still v happy that he isn't being deported, control orders are wronged up, but deportation to torture is worse imo.

Alouiseg · 18/05/2010 22:53

Shami Chakrabarti is putting my life at risk by defending people who spend their time plotting to murder British Citizens.

Greensleeves, may you never experience a member of your family being attacked by an extremist.
