Why did he resign before the Tory-Lib Dem was final, despite being asked by both of them, in the interests of the country, to wait?

He will go down in history as one of our very worst Prime Ministers.

OP posts:
pagwatch · 11/05/2010 21:03

Oh this thread is pants.

Leaving a big shit on the carpet would have been spite...
[meh]

theyoungvisiter · 11/05/2010 21:05

Oh fgs! He can't win can he?

Between the threads saying "why is he hanging on, he's got no legitimacy" and the Sun headlines calling him a "squatter".

I thought you wanted him gone? Now you're pissed because you didn't get to choreograph his exit dance?

Sheesh.

EdgarAllenPoll · 11/05/2010 21:07

i think he has shafted the incomers though, no denying it.

regardless of what the press were saying, his job was to stay put, and then shift when everyone else was ready. You know, like he said he'd do yesterday..

claig · 11/05/2010 21:10

we'll find out more about it over the next few days as the papers tell us more about it and what the correct protocol should be

HumphreyCobbler · 11/05/2010 21:10

I think the OP is unfortunately worded, but he should have stayed as requested imo. It would have been polite to do so.

theruleofthree · 11/05/2010 21:13

Is just v depressing watching an eaton/oxford graduate be driven in a jaguar to the palace and then back again to Downing Street with his arisocratic wife....the ruling classes coming home etc...

EdgarAllenPoll · 11/05/2010 21:18

the last Pm not to fit that description was John Major though...

TheFallenMadonna · 11/05/2010 21:22

John Major? The last Prime Minister not to fit that description resigned about an hour ago.

Unless you are merely focusing on the 'graduate' bit.

theruleofthree · 11/05/2010 21:23

Brown wasn't eaton/oxford though. And he didn't marry the daughter of a Baron. And he doesn't have that sort of shinyness in the cheek department...

CaptainUnderpants · 11/05/2010 21:24

Prawns in the hem of the curtains at No 10 would be spite .

Not a labour fan however a lot of things go on behind he scenes which we will never be party to , so I dont think GB threw down his teddy and said ' Right that's it I'm off if Clegg doesn't want to play with me !'

It's all orchestrated to a timetable fixed by civil servants - so not an act of spite.

theyoungvisiter · 11/05/2010 21:25

Quite! Gordon Brown went to the university of Edinburgh and had a state school education.

I think if you are hoping for a Prime Minister without a degree of any kind, you may be in for a long wait.

SparklyGothKat · 11/05/2010 21:25

i liked Gordon

John Major was the only one not to come from some kind of academic elite position.

Frankly Tony Blair can hardly be termed a commoner now could he? and twas he that got elected.

TheFallenMadonna · 11/05/2010 21:37

By academic elite position do you mean a university graduate ?

theyoungvisiter · 11/05/2010 21:43

Crikey - I went to a state comp and a redbrick uni.

Didn't know that made me one of the "academic elite".

Thanks for the info Edgar! I shall tell work I need a pay rise otherwise I'll be resigning and taking up a position in the shadow cabinet.

[preens]

theruleofthree · 11/05/2010 21:45

I don't have a problem with university graduates becoming PM. Surely the 'academic elite' being in power is mostly a good thing? You don't want some monkey who can't count to 25 in charge of the country...it's just that Cameron's background (and that of most of his little clique...and Nick Clegg) is so far removed from what mostly constitutes Real Life, that it's difficult to see how they can come up with policies that benefit most people.
Plus, he really is shiny. Is that right??

MammaGi · 11/05/2010 21:45

I wasn't keen on Gordon, as I thought he came across as deceptive and secretive and didn't agree with some of the laws that he brought in (probably at the demands of Brussels no doubt) although he wasn't as bad as blair, but I think in terms of his leaving or staying in No. 10, he couldn't do right for doing wrong, and I'm surprisingly starting to feel a degree of sympathy for him. I guess all he'll want to do now, after these last stressful, misguided and unpopular years as Prime Minister, will be sit with his feet up, a nice cup tea whilst watching back to back Come Dine with Me. I know I would.

MammaGi · 11/05/2010 21:46

That is well funny

MammaGi · 11/05/2010 21:48

the comment by pagwatch i mean

theruleofthree · 11/05/2010 21:49

theyoungvisitor - race me for foreign secretary. I've been on a German Exchange!

MNHubbie · 11/05/2010 21:52

Personally I didn't believe in the whole squatter thing. He did the right thing staying on as he was Prime Minister until a new one came along as the country need continuity of power. Anyone making any claims about him squatting etc must have simply misunderstood the political system, that is fine not everyone gets it.

I also thought he had some good points. I am sorry though but it isn't dotting i and crossing ts the Lib Dem party needs to give approval. It is highly unlikely that they won't but it isn't a formality and could lead to the government itself being brought down. It isn't just about being polite but about that much over used phrase of late "don't what is right for the country"

Just my opinion. Sorry.

theyoungvisiter · 11/05/2010 21:55

"theyoungvisitor - race me for foreign secretary. I've been on a German Exchange!"

Hahahaha!

You can have foreign secretary. I'll be home secretary. I was a girl girl patrol leader so I think I've got the uniform vibe down and could do the law and order stuff.

theruleofthree · 11/05/2010 22:01

Fab! And you'll probably know some excellent fire-lighting tips and campfire songs too. Think this is always important in power...

theyoungvisiter · 11/05/2010 22:02

girl girl patrol leader?!

Girl guide obv.
