The dust has almost settled. My assessment of how the BNP performed.

Ok, they didn't make the political breakthrough I'd hoped for, but if you look at the results they are actually very encouraging.

The BNP got 563,743 votes (dispite only fighting half of all the available 650 seats)

They got 10% of the vote. That is pretty amazing for a small party, and under proportional representation those votes would result in seats.

NC will merge with someone (eventually?) and as one of his main aims is to push through PR it's all good for the BNP.

What do these results mean for the BNP ?

The tripling of the BNP vote on May 6th has some important implications.

Firstly, where they went head to head with UKIP and the Greens they thrashed them, they overtook UKIP in 178 seats, and UKIP have far more money than the BNP, and of course UKIP and the Greens are favoured by the media.

Secondly, while all minority parties were pushed to the edge by the bigger parties, the BNP's vote not only help up, but proportionally increased when compared to their June 2009 Euro election results.

The BNP are here to stay, and although the election was a disappointment in some respests, it was a clear sign that 1000's of people up and down the country support the policies of the BNP.

And let's not forget, political pundits had all but written off the Labour party after they lost the 92'election....

They went on to win 3 elections.

DP I'm all for freedom of speech and do believe that you have a right to post about/discuss your political beliefs in a non offensive way (is that even possible when you are discussing the BNP??!!!) but you don't seriously think that anyone is going to agree that the BNP getting any votes is a good thing, let alone over half a million votes?

thatsnotmymonkey · 11/05/2010 14:43

They got 10% of the vote? Really, is that right??

bedhed · 11/05/2010 14:43

RIP national front BNP

AchillesTortoise · 11/05/2010 14:44

No 1.9%

Perhaps DP's maths is not that good.

Chil1234 · 11/05/2010 14:44

Rather than stooping to the level of the playground and throwing insults around like 'wankers'... why not take the argument being presented and pick it apart more rationally?

This country has a strong tradition of free speech. The OP like anyone else is entitled to their view, however distasteful, but we should be able as intelligent women to counteract it quite easily. That's how Griffiths made such an idiot of himself on Question Time.... his rhetoric didn't stand up to any examination.

complimentary · 11/05/2010 14:44

Daaftpunk. Please give me the stats, because if the BNP are really thrashing UKIP, I feel it's rather worrying.

AchillesTortoise · 11/05/2010 14:45

UKIP 3.1%

Which is bad enough, but stop panicking people.

jooseyfruit · 11/05/2010 14:46

ha ha she really is a thick twunt. Has really taken this long, what 5 whole days to come up with your assessment.

weblette · 11/05/2010 14:46

Chil I think the pre-election 'debate' that OP engaged in has pretty much put most people off having any sort of rational discussion with her...

Bramshott · 11/05/2010 14:47

Hang on DP, the BNP got 1.9% of the vote, nothing like 10%.

ladylush · 11/05/2010 14:47

DP why do you bother? Are you hoping to convert people by posting your propaganda?

daftpunk · 11/05/2010 14:47

Will deffo provide all stats you want..

...give me about 40 minutes...need to go and pick up ds

Daftpunk. You that BNP only fielded half of the PPCs that they could have, UKIP fielded I think 500, so if you are correct, then they have done better, I still want to see the stats. Thanks.

AchillesTortoise · 11/05/2010 14:49

Stats here:

Without meaning to be rude - just ignore her!

I checked out the breakdown of loads of constituencies and didn't see anything higher than 4% for BNP - and that was in an area I know to be quite racist. So I don't know where you got 10% from.

thatsnotmymonkey · 11/05/2010 14:51

I knew that figure was tosh, thanks Bram and Achilles, makes you wonder where else DPs figures and "stats" will be fudged or manipulated?

DP, you have a pattern of doing this, start a thread, get challenged, leave the thread/dodge questions

Would be really good if you come back.

AchillesTortoise · 11/05/2010 14:52

Yes but there are 60 million people here and there were nearly 30 million voters.

Agree that the number voting BNP was way too high, but if people don't see the numbers for what they really are, ie a tiny percentage, they almost give more credence to the group than it deserves.

Gleeb · 11/05/2010 14:52

They got 10% of the vote

Not so fast, I think you'll find that's 1.9% of the vote.

Gleeb · 11/05/2010 14:53

Sorry x-post, took too long finding it

UpSinceCrapOClock · 11/05/2010 15:03

Riven - half a million racist homophobic disablist misogynistic tossers no less.

Yup I find it pretty scary stuff too - having lived out of the UK for the past 10 years or so, I've always been proud at how open-minded and multi-cultural British society is (from my perspective), then I moved back here last year and have been open-mouth in disbelief at the BNP airtime the past few weeks. Am glad to see it was disproportionate and the actual percentage of voters in the end was much smaller .
On a tangent, ConDemNation - I did laugh at your name

I can't find anything saying the BNP got 10% of the vote, not even their own website.

SirBoobAlot · 11/05/2010 15:11

Riven - don't let the bastards get you down. For every knuckle-dragging thick-as-shit fuckwit dickhead BNP voter, there are so many more that think reasonably.

LemonEmmaP · 11/05/2010 15:17

DP's assertion of 10% of votes is clearly wrong - it was 1.9%. Even if you take into account the subset of seats which BNP contested, then they still polled just 3.7% of the votes cast in those constituencies. And for anyone interested, I just worked out that of the 303 seats that both UKIP and BNP contested, UKIP got more votes that BNP in 126, while BNP got more votes in 177. Which is really rather alarming...
