Hope this is ok, I was getting withdrawal symptoms!

OP posts:
jenny60 · 11/05/2010 15:55

Tory Lib Dem coalition is our only hope now because we might at least get some form of electoral refrom and if they work ok, an example to the country that coalitions can work. A Lib-Lab pact would be too unstable and everyone would say 'see, this can't work'. The biggest losers here will be the Lib Dems. Cleg has handled this very, very badly.

Beachcomber · 11/05/2010 15:58

I hope the LibDems step away for their own sake.

ImSoNotTelling · 11/05/2010 15:58

yo lefties

what's occuring

just had my dad ranting on at me (he is a lib dem) about how they need to make a deal now and he will leave if they do the deal with labour and AV is a great offer

I kept my mouth shut, know from experience it's best to let him get it off his chest

thetoriesaretoast · 11/05/2010 15:59

Bags being loaded into cars around the back of Downing St. Gordon moving out?? Large holdalls - bodies of dissenting Labour MPs perhaps?

MmeLindt · 11/05/2010 16:00

According to BBC news, the Brown family cars are being loaded with "holdalls" - perhaps luggage?

policywonk · 11/05/2010 16:01

Well Jenny/ISNT, was just coming on to post this from Michael Savage:

'Clegg has played this brilliantly. He got AV offer from Tories based on a Labour counter-offer that couldn't have been delivered anyway. Bravo.' - interesting way of looking at it.

Let's face it, LibLab could go soooooo pear-shaped.

BecauseIAgreeWithGordon · 11/05/2010 16:01

I reckon it's Tony Blair in a bodybag.

After all, they've wheeled out every other older politician but he hasn't been seen anywhere!

MmeLindt · 11/05/2010 16:02

lol at Tony Blair in a body bag

Urgh Hague now

policywonk · 11/05/2010 16:02

Oh and apparently it was E Mil and Balls who were most unenthusiastic about LibLab coalition talks - both possible leaders of course - thinking it was poisoned chalice?

wubblybubbly · 11/05/2010 16:05

I thought AV was just as crappy as FPTP?

Worst possible scenario is a lib/con coalition for me. The tories will seem to have enough clout to do whatever they want and the campaign for PR lost for God knows how long.

jennylindinha · 11/05/2010 16:06

Hello fellow lefties! Been lurking for a while now and trying to do some work, but am competely glued to BBC news 24 (and Mumsnet of course...)

Arrggghhhh - not sure how I feel about all this but it's been better than watching a soap opera, that's for sure!

I'm hoping that the Lib/Con thing fails, Labour regroup and come back stronger and we have a new election in a few months.

MmeLindt · 11/05/2010 16:08

Ok, going to do the ironing to West Wing.

Last time I did that, the PM resigned.

GetOrfMoiLand · 11/05/2010 16:08

Does anyone feel like crying? (re BBC breaking news updates)

Fucking tory crowing bastards and bloody pointless lib dems.

GetOrfMoiLand · 11/05/2010 16:09
taffetacat · 11/05/2010 16:10

its so funny on rolling news channels when they have no news and are waiting, analysing body language, luggage and the like. no wonder Boulton lost it really, the minutae of days and days......

policywonk · 11/05/2010 16:11

Welcome jenny

I dunno. I don't think this is too awful, all things considered. Labour will do well out of this in the medium term I think. LibDems (and therefore PR) - will depend on how far they manage to temper Tory policies. If they perform well, they will be making a good argument for coalition gvt, and therefore PR.

I dunno whether the Tories would risk calling another election v quickly - there's a risk the electorate would punish them for it (most people don't like elections as much as we do )

jenny60 · 11/05/2010 16:13

Thanks wonk, but I've been here for ages

ImSoNotTelling · 11/05/2010 16:14

I just want it done now.

Then i can have a think.

Then you lot can tell me I will decide what I make of it all, and celebrate or rend clothes, accordingly.

BecauseImWorthIt · 11/05/2010 16:14

Apparently they're preparing for a Hameron speech.

MmeLindt · 11/05/2010 16:15

Hague being Mr Smuggysmug of Smugsville

Is it just coincidence that the two Labour guys who are against PR are Scottish?

Who is this Donohue guy?

BeenBeta · 11/05/2010 16:16

Looks like the game is up. Labour have accepted the negotiation with Lib Dems is over. Members of the Labour party think it is a good idea to go into opposition.

I suspect the basis of a Lib-Con agreement wil be announced tonight and Cameron goes to the palace tomorrow.

BeenBeta · 11/05/2010 16:18

Scottish Labour MPs were against an alliance with SMP. Apparently that was one of the main reasons the 'rainbow alliance' idea was not able to move forward last night.

BecauseImWorthIt · 11/05/2010 16:18

But talks still ongoing between LibDems and Tories - so I suppose it's not all finalised yet.

jennylindinha · 11/05/2010 16:19

Thanks PW!

I've not been contributing to threads much since Friday when I was sat at home swigging red wine and pretending to do some work. Not much has changed (apart from no wine in the workplace...)

I love elections! (Apart from the cost naturally) and perhaps 1992...

But perhaps not every week.

I do hope some good comes out of all this.
