DD 16 has been discussing the election with me at home and I just sent her this email in a fit of peak:

I TOLD YOU VOTING LIB DEM WOULD HELP TO GET THE TORIES IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and inserting the link to Skynews.

DD responded:
okk calm down im sure too many people are against them for it to work

Oh to be 16 again.

AndieWalsh · 10/05/2010 16:01

Clegg is a snake, a flake and a ......um...yes, anyway.

He's a tosser. I have always said: I do not know what the Lib Dems stand for. Yes, yes, they have X, Y and Z policies, but who are they?

Thanks for clearing it up for me, Clegg. You're a Tory in 'progressive' clothing.

VOTE LABOUR NEXT TIME!

paulaplumpbottom · 10/05/2010 16:02

I doubt they'll announce anything today though. Its a bit late in the day.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 10/05/2010 16:02

OK, Lib Dems have just made a statement.
No deal yet.

Sky has it wrong. Colour me shocked.

expatinscotland · 10/05/2010 16:02

VOTE SNP, people .

brogan2 · 10/05/2010 16:05

But amidaiwish, more people did vote LD. They got far more votes than last time yet less seats. With that in mind you can't fail to understand why PR is such a biggie for them.

Vesela, I live in GO's seat so safe Tory. I do know though that lots of Labour voters here voted LD to try and lose him the seat. I understand this happened a lot throughout the country.

InmyheadIminParis · 10/05/2010 16:09

Noooooo! No No No.

I'm putting the kettle and CBeebies back on.

I can't stand the suspense!

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 10/05/2010 16:11

But brogan, lots of LD supporters also voted labour in similar situations.

So we voted tactically, and we don't have a Tory gov't with a massive majority ready to crap all over us. Which is a good thing.

Unfortunately, between the two parties we didn't get enough seats to form a gov't (a majority of votes, of course, but not of seats). So better to have a tory gov't restrained by needing LD votes, in the end?

BelleDameSansMerci · 10/05/2010 16:13

PR's always been a big deal for the Liberals (well, since the Labour party came into existence anyway).

Latest (hah!) from the BBC here

snowlady · 10/05/2010 16:13

Nick Clegg said he wanted a fairer society. I'm sorry but all you labour folk who voted tactically have to accept the result of the election. The tories got more seats than new labour so it is FAIRER to have a govt that inolves the tories rather than labour. If the lib dems don't co-operate with the tories there would be a tory minority which would not be watered down by the nice lib dems and would be even less appealing to you. The maths of a lib/lab deal don't work and if they did there are a lot of people who voted lib dem because they were sick of new labour.
The reason the lib dems and tories are trying to reach an agreement is because thanks to new labour the economy is in a mess and needs sorting out. They said they are working in the national interest.

If you are unhappy with the tory/lib co-operation please explain what you think should happen now?

If you are cheesed off why don't you campaign for a better voting system then if you want new labour you can vote new labour. I don't want new labour so would be happier with a lib dem/tory coalition and a better voting system next time.

expatinscotland · 10/05/2010 16:14

you all should have voted SNP!

Next time, you will see the light and vote SNP .

vesela · 10/05/2010 16:22

and not only is it a feature of a PR system, but the Lib Dems said numerous times that they would give first choice in talks to the party that won the elections. They said it whenever asked.

usualsuspect · 10/05/2010 16:22

I never voted lib dem .....

SpeedyGonzalez · 10/05/2010 16:23

snowlady - "The tories got more seats than new labour so it is FAIRER to have a govt that inolves the tories rather than labour." - I disagree. Since Lib + Lab = more seats than Tories alone, that would be a 'fair' alternative, wouldn't it? I.e. more people voted for progressive rather than eighteenth century politics, so we should have a progressive govt.

Personally, though I loathe both New Labour and Tory in equal measure, I'd rather see a Lib/ Lab pact with Gordy pushing off to where someone actually wants him. I'd almost prefer any Labour leader to him at this point in time. But I understand that constitutionally that's slightly tricky with regard to Labour electing a new leader and the electorate having voted with him at the helm all that. But apparently it's not an obstacle that's impossible to overcome.

SpeedyGonzalez · 10/05/2010 16:23

expat -

brogan2 · 10/05/2010 16:24

Yes I agree but I am a leftie stuck in Tatton so my only hope of outing Georgie boy was to vote LD.

brogan2 · 10/05/2010 16:26

What would I like to see now?

Give it to the Tories. Let them run with it and remind the country why we've kept them out for sooo long. We should go away and re-group, coming back as a strong opposition.

A lib/Lab coalition would be a disaster, fail quickly and lead to another election where there's a good chance the Tories would get their majority.

vesela · 10/05/2010 16:29

SpeedyGonzalez - but Lib + Lab isn't any sort of formal or automatic arrangement.

At local level, the Lib Dems work with both the Tories and Labour.
