Where had we got to? We'd agreed that we all love Cameron, right?

DH and I just don't talk politics. I haven't asked him who he voted for because I'm scared of the answer! Until he met me he had never voted, he was of the "they're all the same so what's the point?" school of thought. He's an incredibly intelligent and insightful person, but has just never been interested in politics (which I have always found odd). Anyway, at least now I have him voting. We are in a Con constituency and, to be fair to him, our MP is actually not that bad, he represents the constituents pretty well. I suspect DH may have therefore voted for him for those reasons.

I was labour all the way until the Iraq war, I said I would never vote labour again after that.

Since then I have been lib or green or a combo.

This time I meant to vote lib but like I say went bananas in the polling booth and the green party had 4 more votes than before

Oh but voted Ken as independent and labour for london. Was his second term before or after the war...

So there you go

Cor Hameron your yoof sounds very exciting!

Mine was lefty but rather boring. Small market town, lots of lentil weaving and stripped pine - marches about things like South African bananas in the school canteen.

No-one ever introduced me to my cervix

I am slowly turning DH more and more lefty. His parents are strict Daily Mail Tories and so is the rest of his family. He was never right wing, but he moves a little every year I think.

SofaQueen · 08/05/2010 21:37

I've always been left of center. Marched in High School, staunch Democrat, interred for a summer with my Democrat Congressman in high school. Active in Democrats at Uni (volunteered on 2 presidential campaigns).

Parents are Republican, grew up in a staunch Republican area, and am surrounded by Tory supporters here. Because we don't talk politics much, they would be very suprised that I'm a closet Leftie (yes, Lefties can carry Birkins).

nearlytoolate · 08/05/2010 21:38

I grew up in Ken Clarke's constituency and my mum stood many times in our hopelessly Tory ward. So I feel I have come home and really couldn't live in tory south happily I don't think.
DH and I met through student politics (it was the campaign against David Alton's abortion bill) and have spent many many happy hours debating and discussing...

DavidHameron · 08/05/2010 21:38

Honestly, ones cervix is really not worth getting to know too well. Especially not at 14

Oh we did the lot: I have photos of me on the pro-choice demos, Greenham Common, Rock Against Racism. Am now very proud but back then I just longed to be allowed to wear lipstick and Chelsea Girl without a 4 hour inquisition.

theyoungvisiter · 08/05/2010 21:39

Pfft where do you live - could you start up a lefty support thread?

Maybe you could smuggle it in under cover of a book group - the initial reading could be Mao's Little Red Book, moving on to The Road to Wigan Pier, then perhaps a biography of Engels, followed by The Ragged Trousered Philanthropist...?

theyoungvisiter · 08/05/2010 21:39

sorry - lefty support group - that should have read.

I'm another more left than labour , I really like the Greens and am hoping Carloine Lucas can get more people in to join her.

Anyone watched HIGNFY?

theyoungvisiter · 08/05/2010 21:43

Nymph - I am watching it now. I liked Jo Brand's opening line

Well on current form you're welcome to my ds2 - can't cope with him at 6 so 14 should be pretty, erm, interesting....
Stimulating high energy household with large audience required I think! (not our quiet bookish rather routien and humdrum existence)

nearlytoolate · 08/05/2010 21:45

Leningrad
Are your Ps still around?

taffetacat · 08/05/2010 21:46

I have always voted Labour, as have my parents and both sets of grandparents. My maternal grandfather was involved at a local level.

DH is an evil Tory, always has been and so are his parents. We don't discuss politics. We make snidey comments over our boiled eggs about Brown and Hameron respectively. We snort at each other a fair bit. But we don't discuss. We are fundamentally different in our attitudes to what a government is for.

Its interesting in our house.

nearlytoolate · 08/05/2010 21:48

taffetacat I find it fascinating that partners can have utterly opposed political views.
Anhyway I'm signing off to watch Wallander (can't multi task with laptop as need to watch the subtitles!)

AppleTreeWick · 08/05/2010 21:49

oh the ragged trousered philanthrpist god weep! but a bit of a Hollywood ending don't you think? and the crucible obviously

the 58th (78th?) Brummaire (sp) sorry jesus I've hammered a bottle of sherry already

aaaand The Rights of Man obv

aaand then we can have a meet up at the Tolpuddle Martrys memorial!

My DP is tribal Labour plus used to a matriachical family dynamic (see you and raise you)

wow - love across the political divide. How do you cope? Is it a kind of hate the sin, love the sinner type of scenario?!
