Pondering, and while slightly more optimistic than we once were, still really quite unhappy Lefty thread

Where had we got to? We'd agreed that we all love Cameron, right?

Morning - I feel completely out of the loop having had a politics-free day yesterday (my 44th birthday - I spent most of it thinking "how did I ever get to be so old?" and generally feeling bitter. But I was nicely spoilt by the family).

I am slightly taken aback by the fact the Con/Lib talks are all going so swimmingly - I'd convinced myself that it would all go tits-up, that they had too many differences and we'd have a Con minority gov. I can't wait to find out exactly who's compromised on what.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Trying to think of a joke about champagne socialism and failing

Happy Birthday, Hassled.

Rant away, Justa. I have the same feelings. Why is it so awful? If we had PR then the parties would know in advance that there would be a high possibility of a coalition government and negotiate before the election. As happens in Germany.

There may be a bit of wrangling after the election, but generally everyone knows where the parties stand on particular issues and which parties are likely to get together.

Bucharest · 10/05/2010 09:47

Pffft, just ventured into Active C's and was halfway through the "MN bully" thread and it got pulled.

Happy Birthday Hassled! I'm 44 as well

Ninjacat · 10/05/2010 09:47

My little dream goes like this: LibCon agree on a pact. When parliament sit again half the libDem MPs stand up and walk to the opposition benches. Mwhhh hu hu

Ninjacat · 10/05/2010 09:48

Happy Birthday

theyoungvisiter · 10/05/2010 09:49

theyoungvisiter · 10/05/2010 09:50

Hassled · 10/05/2010 09:50

MmeLindt: Interesting (but old) article comparing the Milibands and their respective strengths

Saw on the news a bit back that Mandy, Campbell etc have gone to have a meeting with Gordon about him stepping down in order to ease talks with the LibDems. This puts pressure on the Tories, Clegg to talk to Labour later today apparently.

gingercat12 · 10/05/2010 09:53

theyoungvisitor OMG I have just said the same thing to DH. Are we desperate or what?!

Beachcomber · 10/05/2010 09:54

Oh and Happy Birthday Hassled.

Plus thanks to all for kind wishes.

MmeLindt · 10/05/2010 09:54

Prolesworth
Maybe he was shouting for the wince cable?

Ninjacat · 10/05/2010 09:58

TheYoungVisitor by all means, pull up a chair

policywonk · 10/05/2010 10:00

Happy Birthday Hassled, you lovely young thing

Wha' 'appen on the bullying thread then - why did it get pulled?

'If we had PR then the parties would know in advance that there would be a high possibility of a coalition government and negotiate before the election. As happens in Germany.' - interesting MmeL, was going to ask you more-highly-evolved types what happens post-election. How long does the horse-trading usually take? Are there formal transition arrangements?

DS2 now covered in spots, but quite happy watching Garfield. I have to work today so must wean myself off the news so please would some kind soul post on here if Something Happens?

Milibands - I like Ed. David pretty comprehensively sullied by the torture stuff I think. Ed's no hardcore socialist but seems definitely to be on the Old Labour side of New Labour (o the hairsplitting). I'd love HH but really think she would be electoral poison, unfortunately - all that unspeakable 'Harperson' bollocks.

Ninjacat · 10/05/2010 10:00

Lenin what sex are you today?

PfftThePinkoLeftyDragon · 10/05/2010 10:02

I know very little about the Milibands, shamefully. I have seen David on Question Time and I like the way that he talks, if that doesn't sound ridiculous. He is measured and calm, gets his point across without getting flustered or making personal comments.

This is the extent of my knowledge. I read the Ed webchat here, he came across well i thought. I would like to see Harman take the reins, but I keep reading everywhere that she doesn't want it.

This pains me to say, as a hardened leftie, but I am sick of the sight of Nick Clegg. I have suspected for a while that his appeal was highly tied up in his underdog status.

Hassled · 10/05/2010 10:03

And sorry - TYV, thank you for the cake
