I'm sorry but how can anyone vote for someone who only gave up their non dom status during the election campaign? How does someone like that contribute to Britain? He only became a tax payer because of the election. To me, that is a scum person.

And whilst he roundly won his seat, why did he have that gurning hooray behind him during the announcements? That, I have to say, was one of my favourite moments of the election, watching that berk's face. Could you get any more Tory?

Not at all. I think they should all be kicked out.

And I think people who cheat and hold public office should be forced to resign.

If they can do that to their nearest and dearest rather than be honest and just end things, then they've shown their character to be deceitful, and are untrustworthy to make legislation that affects other peoples' lives.

expatinscotland · 07/05/2010 21:58

'I believe the richest 10% in the country pay something like 80% of the tax take so I'm not sure this is the best time to ask them to leave.'

Then pay it. Don't wriggle out of it and expect everyone else to pay full whack.

ItsGrimUpNorth · 07/05/2010 21:59

"Would you prefer that he didn't give up his non-dom status?"

Erm, no. I would prefer he never had non-dom status.

And nothing to do with what he looks like. He's just a typical Tory. Probably working in a seat full of non-doms. Which is absolutely nothing to do with the majority of the U.K. population.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 07/05/2010 22:01

He's still voting on issues and legislation that affects all the UK.

Another hypocrite, just like the lot of them.

ItsGrimUpNorth · 07/05/2010 22:01

"I wonder if some people here are aware or just conveniently overlooking all the party funding scandals, of enormous amounts of money given to all three major parties by non-doms?"

Blah blah blah. All three parties are suspect and reprehensible for this. No convenient overlooking.

I know very little about Zac Goldsmith. However, I can understand why someone (such as Zac Goldsmith's father) would want to pass on their wealth to their children rather than be massively taxed by the state (on earnings and assets that have already been taxed).

So if your parent set it up, and that's what you grew up into, at what point would you decide this is wrong, I shouldn't benefit from this situation?

Apparently the answer for ZG was when he was running for office. But I don't know if I can blame him for not having done it sooner.

TheCrackFox · 07/05/2010 22:07

Now I don't agree with all this non-dom nonsense but it was all perfectly legal. And it is something that the Labout party could have changed over the past 13yrs.

The Tories and Labour both love sucking up to the rich folk. We are all just little people to them.

claig · 07/05/2010 22:12

agree, TheCrackFox

Tootiredforgodtyping · 07/05/2010 22:12

I don't care, I'd still do him. Phwoar

Meglet · 07/05/2010 22:14

I've just seen the bloke standing next to ZG! He looks like a deranged worzel gummage .

ItsGrimUpNorth · 07/05/2010 22:16

I think this should read "pass on their massive wealth to their children"

Therein lies the problem. Just how much money do the wealthy need? Because them there Goldsmiths have got pots and pots and pots of cash. And I really don't feel for them having to pay more tax. Tough, isn't it? Being so rich.

Tax is a reality of fair living in the U.K. and if you want to be an M.P., then you've got to be seen as paying your way. That's the way it is. You don't like it, then go and live off your huge family wealth elsewhere and avoid paying tax. But don't you ever dare assume you are one of the British people who graft and graft to pay their way instead of resenting paying tax on your inheritance.

Inheritance - isn't that money for nothing? Shouldn't everyone be working to generate their very own incomes?

Yep, not illegal but clearly unfavourable so that's why he changed his status.

I wouldn't mind so much if a level playing field was created.

And before you shout, "Resentful prole!" I speak as someone whose family faces rather a hefty inheritance tax.

Zac will be Leader of Tories / PM one day. Mark my words.

(I do not want the 2nd part of this to happen)

TheCrackFox · 07/05/2010 22:19

Richmond looks like on the TV and yes, I will concede that Zac is well fit.

expatinscotland · 07/05/2010 22:19

all the more reason to encourage my children to leave as soon as they are able, ifancy.

i'll be following, too, hopefully.

am starting an accounting course in september to gain new skills to help open our options.

claig · 07/05/2010 22:20

ifancyashandy, agree with you 100%. Or he will be leader of Labour and either way will bring in the Green Nirvana.

ifancyashandy · 07/05/2010 22:21

He's got the money, connections, education and the looks. Whitehalls Wet Dream, that boy.

claig · 07/05/2010 22:23

exactly

WinkyWinkola · 07/05/2010 22:24

He is good looking. But he's a prat so erm, good looking-ness nullified instantly.

jeananddolly · 07/05/2010 22:24

I file him in the same category as Russell Crowe. Cannot stand him as a person, cannot abide his works, his principles or his beliefs but...I so would. Any day. And twice on Sunday.

Hope i have contributed something illuminating to the thorny subject of taxation and non-dom status.

goodnightmoon · 07/05/2010 22:25

"inheritance=money for nothing"

where do you draw the line on what amount of money is acceptable for a child to be born into and benefit from? surely you can't pay your own way from birth? and most rich people work anyway and do generate their own incomes. your points don't hold up.

expatinscotland · 07/05/2010 22:25

He's good looking if you're into the fem type of bloke.

Does nowt for me.

I prefer Scotsmen.

claig · 07/05/2010 22:25

in fact I think we may soon have Old Etonians in charge of Labour and the Tories. The proles will learn to love Etonians one way or another. We already love Boris.

claig · 07/05/2010 22:27

expatinscotland, sorry I'll pass on Gordon Brown, but everyone has different tastes

expatinscotland · 07/05/2010 22:27

Um, did I say Gordon?

I'm married to a Scotsman. Hence, the name.

jackstarbright · 07/05/2010 22:31

This from the Paul Mason blog:

" Zac ran a high profile zippy campaign with blue windcheaters, electric bikes and what looked to me like several chapters of Debrett's peerage in tow.

Yet he - anecdotally - took votes off the Libdems and Labour in the least affluent wards."

www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/newsnight/paulmason/ scroll past the bond Market stuff.

My local info is he picked up votes from female first time voters! All very Jilly Cooper!
