Its quite disturbing to read on forums about the election that there is still this stupid attitude(scotland votes labour ,england tory..each wants to get rid of other country)..so would like to remind people who want scotland and england to split (or england to ditch scotland) that both countries are joined because the Scottish monarch King JAMES inherited England from Queen Elizabeth the first......so in that case if england dumps scotland ....we keep the queen-because of the direct line to Mary queen of scots. . lol .
The clue is in the name "united kingdom".
Regardless of who will be in goverment , surely the countries are better united?.
Like wise perhaps a united -party goverment could well be the best thing for the nation..(all four countries) too.IDEALY -each party could bring their best to the goverment.

I heard somewhere that the Scots were more likely to vote Labour as GB is Scottish

In that case why didn't everyone in England vote Tory?

louii · 07/05/2010 16:49

The Scots are were likely to vote labour as they thought it would keep the Tories out, that plan didnt work did it!

I voted SNP the only party actually relevant to Scotland.

drloves8 · 07/05/2010 17:02

the majority voted Labour in Scotland , not because GB is scottish , but because they simply do not trust the Torys , THIS harks back to the days of MAGGIE THATCHER and the pll tax fiasco (for those who are too young to remember MT thought it a good idea to try out the poll tax (all over 18 yrs to pay even if they were homeless ?)in scotland first , whilst the rest of the uk still had "rates").not sure if it was legal or not , but it caused a load of trouble , people not paying as it was unfair and eventually it was scrapped in favour of the council tax. from what i gather loads more voted LibDem and SNP this time .

"In that case why didn't everyone in England vote Tory?"

helyg, they practically did. The Tories trounced Labour in England.

Have you seen the election map?

England clearly wants very different things to Scotland and Wales.

Referendum anyone?

well one of my FB friends has a quote from the declaration of Arbroath 1320 on her status......

does it bother me? Nope.....

Alouiseg · 07/05/2010 17:18

look at this

drloves8 · 07/05/2010 17:18

it would be a sad day if the uk splits.imo.
IF Scotland had voted TORY , would so many still want to dump scotland? . i think no.

how did the SNP do versus Labour? I didn't follow that.
Also why are there so many socialists in Scotland? the SNP is also socialist. Why do poor areas with working class people in England still vote Tory whereas in Scotland there seem to be hardly any Tories?

claig · 07/05/2010 17:26

Alouiseg, thanks for the map. I didn't realise that the Lib Dems were as strong as that in Scotland

drloves8 · 07/05/2010 17:27

claig , its because of the poll tax .
dont think SNP is viewed as a real contender , Alex salmond isnt taken all that seriously , perhaps because hes too socialist.

they did a lot better this time than usual btw.

Everytime I see Salmond on the news, I am impressed by him. He seems very clever. I think if I were a Scot, I would most probably back him. Pre-Thatcher were the Tories a stronger force in Scotland?

I come from Essex and we have some poorer towns but the people here still prefer the Tories to Labour. We see the Tories as allowing us freedom and aspiration, who tax us less and allow us to prosper. Is there none of that feeling in Scotland?

JennyPiccolo · 07/05/2010 17:33

yeah, people were voting labour to keep the tories out, as opposed to actually supporting them.

i think Cameron will want to ditch Scotland as soon as is possible, that's 40-odd less labour seats next election...

claig · 07/05/2010 17:38

I think the Scots are a fantastic people. But when I woke up this morning and saw the fantastic blue map of England as we had booted the red menace out, I felt as if we might be cheated, and might have to suffer the same old Labour faces on TV because there wasn't a single blue part of the map in the whole of Scotland. I know it's democracy, but I thought please allow some Tory seats up there or we'll be kept forever in bondage down here by Labour.

littleducks · 07/05/2010 17:39

"so in that case if england dumps scotland ....we keep the queen-because of the direct line to Mary queen of scots."

seems fine to me, presumerably you will be paying for her upkeep?

oh and i live near windsor, would be happy to rent part of the castle if it was part of a keyworkers scheme

drloves8 · 07/05/2010 17:53

lol ironicaly , not many scottish people i know cherish the monachy .
Its strange how some have voted , i suspect some vote for a certain party because they do feel their supposed too , because thats who they are brainwashed brought up to support , instead of looking at the policies and understanding what party is trying to acheive.

Alex Salmond just wants people to think of Scotland as all tartan and shortbread i gre up with 4 brothers who all worked at one time in the steel industy now there is no steel industry in Scotland I know nothing about politics now compared to what i knew a s ateenager there used to be some brilliant political arguments in our house i voted Lib Demmyesterday but i am a labout supporter at heart i would NEVER vote Conservative but i dont hate David Cameron and lastly some people will always feel the need to pit Scotland and England its daft were all the same different accents thats all oh apart from the rich that is... alien species

Saltire · 07/05/2010 19:51

Ha, it's me that has the declaration of Arborath on my FB status because, as a scot living in England I have had so much crap thrown at me, especially today about Scots being scroungers, idiots etc, I thought I'd get all patriotic!

toccatanfudge · 07/05/2010 20:01

well I wasn't going to mention any names Saltire

Saltire · 07/05/2010 22:14

I ahve actually deleted it now as my status, I've been getting a lot of RL crap from people about my MNetting, and after I posted it I thought "oh bugger"
