Butterfly, that means almost 99% of voters aren't.

I don't find that too bad.

ChickensNeedOpposableThumb · 07/05/2010 12:07

The BNP got 4.5% of the vote here. Depressing.

JackBauerIsZonerrific · 07/05/2010 12:09

Obviously it is good that they didn't get a seat but it is majorly depressing, and more than a little bit scary, that there are half a million adults in the country who are willing to support them.
Deeply worrying tbh.

GrimmaTheNome · 07/05/2010 12:11

and 874,171 UKIP, no seats.

I wouldn't be too stressed by one or two of these oddities in parliament, they shoot themselves in the foot whenever they open their mouths.

caramelwaffle · 07/05/2010 12:15

DaftPunk said she voting Conservative yesterday (no BNP candidates put forward in her ward I guess)

SamanthaFox · 07/05/2010 12:19

Really? tory? lol.

Coolfonz · 07/05/2010 12:21

582,000 votes is fuck all considering the amount of press and airtime their allies in the right wing media gave them.

how many times did you hear the rise of the bnp.

but in fact the Greens get an MP, still nothing about it...how many times did we hear the rise of the greens in the campaign

also only 5mn population in scotland and the snp dont run in England an wales unlike the bnp

GrimmaTheNome · 07/05/2010 12:25

Its nice a Green got in - about the only decent non-regional small party . How did it happen? Is she very well known and respected locally or were the alternatives double-dyed bastards?

Hope she gets on some appropriate committees.

caramelwaffle · 07/05/2010 12:28

Ah yes Coolfonz, of course. The Green's getting a Seat is actually Big News: the Green M.P. is the first Green M.P. IN the world to ever gain a seat through First Past the Post voting

ladylush · 07/05/2010 13:05

Good Also loving the boos

ladylush · 07/05/2010 13:06

I can imagine Green doing well in Brighton. I gather Caroline Lucas is well respected too. Good on her

OrdinarySAHM · 07/05/2010 13:40

I hope people are right when they say that any BNP MPs in the House of Commons would be laughed down. Maybe they would learn something actually, if they were more involved in making real decisions about the running of the country. Maybe they would start to see that things aren't so black and white as they thought.

EricNorthmansmistress · 07/05/2010 13:48

Look, part of the BNP 'appeal' is 'making a stand' when people feel their vote would not count if voting for the big three two. Much Like the reasons why I have voted Green in the past. If we had PR I doubt I would have voted Green - and many of those stupid people would not vote BNP, because they would feel that their vote had weight.

If you are in a safe Lab seat for eg, and you are racist right wing, you may feel that voting BNP is the right thing for you to do, rather than 'waste' a vote on Con. However if you actually know that your Con vote has value, you will not vote BNP.

Translating yesterday's voter shares into PR seats is pointless, as millions would possibly have voted differently if we had PR. Many people vote tactically, for one thing.

EricNorthmansmistress · 07/05/2010 13:51

Grimma Brighton Pavilion has been edging towards Green for years. It has been talked about as the only possibility for a green MP for many elections. She came 2nd (?) in 2005 behind Labour and I think there was a huge feeling of if not now, when? I moved out of BP last year but I always voted Green when in BP.

EricNorthmansmistress · 07/05/2010 13:51

Plus we're all hippies innit

magentadreamer · 07/05/2010 14:33

Looking at the the declared councils it would appear that the scum have lost some seats.

Salbysea · 07/05/2010 14:39

is it not likely that for every BNP protest voter who would not really vote BNP with PR, there are as many if not more hard core BNPers who did tactical voting for one of the main 3 under this system who WOULD change their votes to BNP under PR?

so I don't think there'd necessarily be less BNP votes with PR, perhaps there would be more?

toccatanfudge · 07/05/2010 15:55

yes so far BNP have lost seven councillors in the locals

toccatanfudge · 07/05/2010 15:56

sorry make that 9 they've lost - just updated the page and they're lost another 2

posieparker · 07/05/2010 15:58

Ah, can we have a quick whip round of whoop whoops for daftpunk....

whomovedmychocolate · 07/05/2010 16:01

I actually think that PR could be good for getting rid of the BNP. If people had more exposure to these racist bigots, they'd realise how potty they were. Also they'd see a wider range of party views from the other parties and see that their views were more closely aligned with some other sane party.

Do you think Daftpunk has gone on a retreat with the KKK to regroup?

BigGitDad · 07/05/2010 16:02

500,000 is still a sizable amount and I would not write that off lightly. If there was proportional representation would they get any seats? Depending on which PR you have they probably would.
For the record I am not pro BNP but do not ignore 500,000 voters because that is a sizable amount of people who are 1) Racist or 2) Geniunely feel they are disenfranchised and so feel they have to vote elsewhere.
We do have an underclass issue in the UK and this needs to be addressed, otherwise the issue of the BNP will not go away.

BigGitDad · 07/05/2010 16:03

PR would most likely mean BNP having votes in parliament. It was hoe the Nazi party in Germany (Weimar republic) were able to get a hold in the Reichstag.

BigGitDad · 07/05/2010 16:04

How not hoe!

Alibabaandthe40tories · 07/05/2010 16:06

BNP and UKIP is a major reason to be wary of PR.

Nationally UKIP got 3%, BNP 2% and Green 1%. A PR system would perhaps have seen the BNP getting a seat/seats in the House of Commons which would have been a hideous thing.
