OTOH nearly 2% voted BNP, meaning... about 6 seats would be theirs?

ASecretLemonadeDrinkerDAVE · 07/05/2010 06:53

13 seats for BNP sorry with 2%

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2010 06:54

thats the bastard aspect of democracy. pr can be done in different ways though that perhaps could prevent that sort of thing. far too addled to think about it atm.

LoveBeingAHungParliament · 07/05/2010 06:54

But they've gone down

IDemosthenes · 07/05/2010 06:54

well no asecretlemonadedrinker because, like in germany now, we would have a minimum % of votes in place so ensure than fringe parties who could hold the balance of power to the detriment of the country such as the BNP etc would not be able to gain seats on such low figures.

FrakkinTheReturningOfficer · 07/05/2010 06:55

I just started a thread (WWYD if you were Nick Clegg) saying I'd align with Labour, who've just starting spouting electoral reform, ask for a referendum and push for an election the minute that's past....

I absolutely agree with you, ID.

IDemosthenes · 07/05/2010 06:56

They might have gone down in votes, (have they, not checked that) but in a situation of a hung parliament, or where the % of the votes across the country is split so closely, then it matters. It matters a lot that they have such a close figure to the labour party yet will not be truly represented, whether less people voted for them or not. I had never been fair, but now, for some reason i feel it more.

FrakkinTheReturningOfficer · 07/05/2010 07:00

Are we going to know in the next 3 hours?

I have to go teach a class in 15 mins

IDemosthenes · 07/05/2010 07:02

OYBBK yes you would have say minimum votes to be able to gain a seat set at say 4% of the votes? And you can split PR to allow different voting for local MP and national party.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2010 07:07

thanks ID, been a long time since I've properly looked into pr (had given up hope of it ever happening) also got brain capacity of a gnat this am!

dh has just emerged. making emergency toast.

SomeGuy · 07/05/2010 07:07

my projection:

Tories: 314
Labour: 257
Lib Dems: 51
Unionists: 9
SNP: 6
Sinn Fein: 4
Plaid: 3
SDLP: 3
Green: 1
Alliance: 1
Speaker: 1

324 needed for victory

So Tories plus unionists = 323, versus 323 for all other parties.....

Seems to mean another election in a few months time.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2010 07:11

not sure I can do this again!!!

ASecretLemonadeDrinkerDAVE · 07/05/2010 07:12

Sinn Fein could be 5 - any update on that I wonder? Shame Tory and Sinn Fein couldn't join forces

FrakkinTheReturningOfficer · 07/05/2010 07:15

OMG I have to go to work. I can't bear not knowing!!!!

bebejones · 07/05/2010 07:15

I have just one thing to say...What a farce! (No great surprise really!!)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2010 07:16

poplar still verifying!!!!!

IDemosthenes · 07/05/2010 07:17

There is abolsutely NO WAY conservatives can take power on that little majority, they do not have absolute majority over all other parties.

Is it more likely a re-election or coalition?

FrakkinTheReturningOfficer · 07/05/2010 07:18

Hampstead & Kilburn recount! Again.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2010 07:18

Frakkin - may still not finally know til you get back.

hampstead having a recount. took 6 hours for first count. wonder what their polling station queues were like last night.

IDemosthenes · 07/05/2010 07:18

asecretlemonadedrinker seriously? sinn fein and the tories?

ASecretLemonadeDrinkerDAVE · 07/05/2010 07:18

I recon another election with all this running out of paper and re counts and queues...

ASecretLemonadeDrinkerDAVE · 07/05/2010 07:19

Lol, I know, but it would give them the power of 5 more seats and would suit me just fine!

Cant believe Conservs just lost a seat by 175!

IDemosthenes · 07/05/2010 07:19

where i am, the tories won on a majority of 900. So a recount in many areas not surprising. How gutting for those areas that have lost hundreds of votes due to late voters. Really could have made the difference

SomeGuy · 07/05/2010 07:20

anywhere where votes h ave been lost and the result is close, there is a high chance of legal challenges

IDemosthenes · 07/05/2010 07:20

I would not want sinn fein in any sort of power/coalition. Given their history. And given my brother is in the forces.
