Labour won 27% of the vote and 261 seats
Conservatives won 34% of the vote and 272 seats
Lib Dems won 27% of the vote and 86 seats.

According to the Times that is a serious proposition as polls stand today.

Depressed as the Tories wouldn't have an outright majority.

I feel badly let down by a so called "democracy" that allows one party to get 3 times more seats than another even though they have the same share of the vote. Surely our electoral system has to change after this election.

Not pleased. But if the Lib Dems make it up to 37% (that's only 4% off one of the latest polls) then they'll be the largest party. Bring it on.

(the seat calculators show a sudden jump for the Lib Dems in seat numbers once they get past the mid-30s. 37% is largest party territory, 42% overall majority )

mumtoone - Sadly, I think you're looking at the reason it doesn't.

Sessypoos · 17/04/2010 23:52

Surprised! Im hoping lib dems will get a majority, and from the polls this looks like a posibility

But I agree we really need electoral reform to stabilise this country. It has done wonders for germany to name just one!

gaelicsheep · 17/04/2010 23:56

It would be an absolute blardy disgrace. I posted about something similar earlier. Labour polling in third place in one of the latest polls and yet, according to the BBC, they would still win the most seats.

But I worry that the proposed electoral reform would badly destabilise the country. I just don't know, I am really in two minds on it. I would actually like to see the introduction of a two term only for the party leaders as in the states.
