I won't be voting Tory because...

  • My children go to a Surestart children's centre and I don't want that threatened when they start their slash and burn;
  • The schools in my area are going to get their Building Schools for the Future funding soon. The torys are saying no BSF project is safe unless all the contracts have been signed, so if they get in, my children's future secondary schools are likely to stay over-crowded and sub-standard;
  • This report in the Evening Standard today about Boris Johnson's raft of broken promises since he was elected makes me think that a future Tory government is going to deliver on little that they are promising now.

Not sure who I will vote for though. I think I voted Green last time.

Because I think that people are more important than money. Because I believe that those of us who are able are blessed - not better than those who aren't able. Because I believe that if we are lucky enough to be able we should help and support those who aren't. Because I believe in society. Because Lord Ashcroft's behaviour around his non dom status sums up the Tory attitude really well - greedy and personal wealth oriented.

Clarissimo · 26/03/2010 11:59

Anohter reason why I don't vote Tory (who I do vote for is the business of nobody and somewhat flexible from campaign to campaign): I beleive in a safety net that is there for all.

When care costs upwards of £500 a week, there are incredibly few of us who could actually afford to pay long term for a loved one, yet we are all one bus accident away from needing it. Ditto most benefits. There's a certain self preservation way different to socialist motivation in desiring a party that works to ensure a decent the welfare state, and personally I don't see that as in line with Tory philosophy.

Ninjacat · 26/03/2010 23:54

Oliver I just read some of the tory thread. I now feel much better about the world having read your post.

expatinscotland · 27/03/2010 00:11

Too right, Clar.

SparklyGothKat · 27/03/2010 00:28

Our local MP is tory, he is a bloodly good MP, sorts out local problems, lives locally, in there at all the rallies for closures of A&E, schools etc. But I don't know who to vote for this year, I don't normally vote but I think that my one vote might make a difference this year, I am scared that as a family with 2 disabled kids, we will be thrown to the lions if Tory get in.

expatinscotland · 27/03/2010 00:34

Do it, Sparkly! Please. Whilst there is still time. Vote. It meant so much to so many who put themselves on the line to buy us that right.

Have a good think and then go with your conscience.

You count, and so does your vote.

DuelingFanjo · 28/03/2010 12:45

They will completely F**k over social care in this country which will wffect many many people in a bad way including children, those with mental health issues, the disabled and the sick.

That's one reason why I won't be voting Tory.

I want to live in a society which cares for the people who need it most.

nutbrownhair · 31/03/2010 23:27

It Would Be Rocking The Boat - and mine is only just floating thanks to Gordon's timely lifelines.... and anyway like the above, I just couldn't....least of all for 'friendly Dave, the bloke-next-door.' It would be more honest to present himself as the elite he is.At least Gordon's always the same, and those back-room-boys provide the glamour for us mums!

sweetjane1 · 06/04/2010 10:17

I find the fact that all those captains of industry are getting behind the anti NI increases with the Tories sinister. Most of them are on salary and benefits which can be up to 81 times the average employee's pay packet - why would we trust them to invest any savings in new jobs - they're more likely to put it towards further Directors' bonuses and shareholders. Are they guaranteeing to put an equal amount towards job creation? The jobs that are created these days are short term contracts, no pension, no holidays, no overtime and probably incentivised and target driven in order to increase profits for those at the top to benefit. There is no long term investment or sense of companies working as communities. THese fat cats, along with bankers, have screwed us all big time and the Conservative Party are thick as theives with them. The Conservatives talk about broken Britain - the gap would only widen between rich and poor under a Conservative Government. Other things like their history on the Bribery Bill and Vulture funds all smack of wrongdoing.

callmedave went to eton. he joined the bullingdon club. he married an aristocrat. he invented the poll tax. he was advisor to norman lamont on black wednesday. he knows nothing of ordinary life. hear me now people. run, run for your lives. stop them before they kill again.

GentleOtter · 06/04/2010 19:49

My utter loathing of Scottish aristocratic landowners, the ongoing feudal system and other rantworthy subjects would have me vote for almost anyone else (not Labour) as this is the 'class' the Tories morphed from and defend.

smittenkitten · 06/04/2010 19:55

because I can't forgive them for section 28, and the failure to censure Chris Grayling for his homophobic comments about the gay couple and the B&B shows they haven't changed their colours.

wb · 06/04/2010 20:08

...because I can still remember the 1980s. Never will they have a chance with me.

BillieJackson · 06/04/2010 20:15

Because they are wolves in sheep's clothing. They have allied themselves with Nazi scum in Europe, and I do not believe they are any different deep down.

I also remember the 1980s. I will dance on the day Thatcher dies, and that is no lie.

vesela · 06/04/2010 20:26

Pink News do regular polls of their readers and the Tories were running on 40% of the gay vote about a year ago - since then they've managed to half it to 20%, with a 5% swing to the Lib Dems this past week alone after Cameron's Gay Times interview and the Chris Grayling B&B comments here.

vesela · 06/04/2010 20:29

sorry meant past month.

Grayling has no doubt raked in a few UKIP-type voters with those comments, though.

jonicomelately · 06/04/2010 20:33

Mostly this

Just not my bag I'm afraid.

jollydiane · 06/04/2010 20:43

The most important thing to do is to VOTE. If you don't vote you have no say and have no right to moan. If there is nobody that you can vote for then stand for election yourself.

Has anyone heard of the Jolly Party?

vesela · 06/04/2010 20:43

oh dear...

and when you plough through it, it emerges that the reason for the kerfuffle was that she was pregnant...

jonicomelately · 06/04/2010 20:46

Sorry to hasve done that to you vesal. Didn't realise quite how long it was.

vesela · 06/04/2010 21:24

oh, it was riveting stuff, joni!

careaboutcruelty · 07/04/2010 16:54

There are so many reasons not to vote Tory, but here's my main one. I care about cruelty, I care about the vulnerable being viciously attacked for fun, and I despise the Tories for their position on bloodsports. They love them.

Specifically hunting with hounds, where they've promised to repeal the long overdue, highly popular and hard-fought for Hunting Act 2004.

Cameron is a former fox hunter [and loves shooting deer] . His first firm policy pledge when he became leader was to repeal the Hunting Act. He's huge friends with the Heythrop hunt in his constituency, several of whom not only gave large amounts to his leadership campaign but have made huge donations to the Tory Party. His friend and shadow Environment Secretary, Nick Herbert, is a former avid hare hunter and high up in the Countryside [i.e. bloodsports] Alliance. Almost all Tory sitting MPs and candidates in winnable seats are pro-hunting.

Thousands of hunters are bussing in to campaign in marginals occupied by anti-hunt MPs or candidates, but they've been told not to bring up hunting on the doorstep because it's so unpopular.

A few months ago the hunters got upset when Cameron hinted repeal might be via a private members Bill and the Tories rapidly caved in and said it would be a government Bill.

They want to return to the legalised barbarity of allowing gangs of their friends with large packs of trained killer dogs to roam round the countryside chasing terrified animals for as long as possible [this gives good 'sport] - hares & foxes up to 90 minutes, deer up to 7 hours. For fun.
It's nothing to do with 'pest control', however much they like to pretend it is.

Do you really want to vote for people who enjoy and support such atrocities? Who like hearing a hare scream pitifully when it is eventually caught by the pack, seeing one literally torn apart by greyhounds in coursing, a deer calf whipped away from its mother so they can chase and slaughter the adult for fun, young foxes coralled in a wood while the hounds are set upon them in 'cubbing'. 'People' who relish chasing and tearing apart pregnant or nursing vixens in late winter, perhaps leaving the infant cubs to starve to death?

Do you want that sort of person running the country and having power over poor and vulnerable people as well as animals? If not, then DON'T VOTE FOR CAMERON AND CRUEL TORIES

'Compassionate' Conservatism?? Pull the other one, Mr. Cameron, it's got hunting horns on.

Because I have a brain.

Because I have a soul.

Because I have a conscience.

livenletlive · 09/04/2010 13:40

How much time have we got about not to vote Tory. Apart from the 'back to basic' that Cameron's talking about and his 'family values' he's talking about change for the future. Yes that change is for looking after yourself and your family and pulling the ladder up. As for Surestart my friend has now triplets in her family, no IVF, just natural. The mother has to go back to work because they can't afford for her not to. The grandmother has to help look after the babies, because all the Surestarts in the area are closing down under Tory County Council and the Tories will close the lot down if they get control. You know why?? Because they say that Surestart is unfair to private nurseries!!!!!!!!!!!! This poor woman with triplets would have to pay £1800-£2000 every 4 weeks to BE ABLE TO WORK 3 DAYS A WEEK ONLY!!! That's some nursery fee. Or maybe those that think it's ok for Surestart to close down will make the mother think and she will stay at home, SO THE WHOLE FAMILY WILL HAVE TO GO ON BENEFITS!!!The husband won't earn anywhere near enough to pay mortgages (they only got married 18 months ago and only wanted one baby!)They were late 30's getting married. What sort of economic policy is that??

Don't tell me about Tories and caring they can't even pronounce the word. They're what you see -a load of rich/recently made it/wannabee make its.

Vote to keep the Tories out. TACTICAL VOTING.
