I won't be voting Tory because...

  • My children go to a Surestart children's centre and I don't want that threatened when they start their slash and burn;
  • The schools in my area are going to get their Building Schools for the Future funding soon. The torys are saying no BSF project is safe unless all the contracts have been signed, so if they get in, my children's future secondary schools are likely to stay over-crowded and sub-standard;
  • This report in the Evening Standard today about Boris Johnson's raft of broken promises since he was elected makes me think that a future Tory government is going to deliver on little that they are promising now.

Not sure who I will vote for though. I think I voted Green last time.

On 17th March at 22.52 expatinscotland wrote "I won't be voting Tory because I find most people running for office under this party morally bankrupt and clueless".

I think you're actually describing the current government - doesn't lying under oath count as fairly morally bankrupt (Gordon Brown at the Chilcot enquiry)? Talking about the Chilcot enquiry, even if Brown didn't lie, and simply got his figures confused (which is what he claims) that strikes me as unacceptably clueless!

tartyhighheels · 18/03/2010 13:20

I too am old enough to remember the last time they were in power and i would never ever vote for them.

TheCalvert · 18/03/2010 14:15

Having considered all the posts above, I will be voting Tory in the next election for numerous reasons (this list is definitely not exhaustive!):

Firstly, I am in a position where I have to put my son through private nursery as there are no Sure Start centres close to where we live. After tax and NI contributions, I have a nominal about in pay to actually live off, and all because I have too much pride to claim benefits. I get nothing from the Labour government

Secondly, it is reported that in order to close the financial deficit we currently find ourselves in, Labour are seriously considering abolishing tax on childrens clothes and VAT on household essentials (as well as increasing the VAT threshold to 20%). In my mind, if this is a tax on the poorer members of our society, I don?t know what is, because it sure as hell will hit poorer families.

Thirdly, Gordon, as Chancellor for goodness knows how many years, can?t even get his evidence at Chilcott right with regards to the defence budget and didn?t have the decency to apologise in his letter to rectify his statement.

Fourthly, the farce that is the Omagh bombing in 1997 and the proposed ?Death Tax?. Need I say more?

Fifthly, they have little idea how to run the economy ?there needs to be cuts made, but not introducing serious cuts until the budget in April 2011 is madness. They are not taking the advice that Europe are giving and with our debt at 13% GDP, I am terrified about the legacy of Labours complete lack of regard to public spending will be hanging over me long after I retire.

Rant over, but feel free to make your own decisions.

ElenorRigby · 18/03/2010 18:36

I won't be voting Tory because...
The Tories cannot possibly win in my constituency. So I will be voting for the candidate that will keep NuLabour OUT.

I would urge everyone that puts the well being of this country to vote for any candidate (except the BNP of course) who has the hope of defeating their local labour MP.

If NuLabour gets in again the country will be ruined totally.

For Britain's sake vote tactically people!!

antoinettechigur · 18/03/2010 19:09

I have a brain.

"They are not taking the advice that Europe are giving and with our debt at 13% GDP, I am terrified about the legacy of Labours complete lack of regard to public spending will be hanging over me long after I retire." No, but they are in agreement with the IMF - we all know there will be cuts but the IMF say cuts need to come later, not immediately.

Batteryhuman · 18/03/2010 19:21

I remember the last time.

I remember what wankers the Bullingdon lot were when I was at Oxford (my time there overlapped with Boris and the boys), how they despised ordinary students, and I can remember saying then (one always speculated about who the future politicos were) that when these people were running the country it would not be because I had voted for them.

Because they have yet to come out with one word of sense on the economic crisis.

ElenorRigby · 18/03/2010 19:28

What last time?

Fucking hell, the whole country is on an economic precipice.

NuLabour has been in power for the last 13 years.

I care about people who dont have the choices I am lucky to have

glastocat · 18/03/2010 23:40

I no longer live in the UK, but if I did I wouldn't vote Tory even if you put a gun to my head. I'm old enough to remember Thatcher too, and anyone who believes this cuddly Conservative Cameron crap is in for a rude awakening.

AppleTreeWick · 19/03/2010 12:42

Because I don't trust them with the economy

Because I generally oppose their world view so wouldn't trust them to make any decisions for my country

Because I love surestart too!

But mostly because I would rather die than vote Tory...

electra · 19/03/2010 13:52

'Everyone in the Tory party is trying to pass off this "Caring Conservative" nonsense, but they all still idolise that woman and everything she did.' - Too true!!

I will not be voting Tory because;

Everything they stand for is the antithesis of what I believe in.

I remember how hard life was for some of my friends under Thatcher's administration

I have a disabled child

I love the Sure Start scheme, too and I would be gutted if that got axed

Because Torys don't care about anyone who can't care for themselves - no such thing as society, makes me sick!!!!!

I could go on forever about why I wouldn't vote for them - I actually cannot think of one single reason why I would......

Alouiseg · 19/03/2010 14:04

Actually I will be. Mainly because Brownfinger has singlehandedly ruined our economy over the last 13 years.

When times were good he should have being squirrelling away for a rainy day because they always come. He was so arrogant to even think that he could put an end to boom and bust. All he did was delay the first bust so it built such momentum and came crashing down around us.

If there was such a thing as a crime against the economy that man has committed it.

No party will be able to sustain the sheer level of waste that is flushing through the country at the moment. Cuts will be made services will be worse than decimated but the Brown man has made it clear that he has no idea how financial markets work. He is not to be trusted.

Just remember that all the services you want to hang on to are not free. We're all paying for them.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 19/03/2010 14:08

Brownfinger, so childish

urgh

Alouiseg · 19/03/2010 14:10

blogs.ft.com/westminster/2009/01/brown-finger/

It amused me no end.

Litchick · 19/03/2010 15:42

I probably should vote tory.
On papaer they are for me...higher rate tax payer, self employed, DC in private school, private health insurance etc etc...

And most of all my life long allegiance to the Labour party has been utterly squandered by Gordon, Ed et al. Bunch of complete fascist dictators.

Still I can't see myself voting Tory. There's all those old memories ( my Dad was a miner) and the fact that he is being so bloody woolly. DC has said almost nothing about anything.

I won't vote Tory because they do nothing for the higher income tax bracket.

skihorse · 19/03/2010 17:33

Does anyone who won't be voting Tory because they can "remember the last time" think of any logical explanation as to why the Tories might have needed to make cuts.

Here are a few clue words and phrases to help fill any gaps in knowledge or memory: Labour, IMF, cap in hand.

BBL1 · 19/03/2010 18:59

I too, remember the last time the Tories were in power, whole commmunities were destroyed. Whilst I haven't agreed with all the regenration plans that have been initiated since 1997, I can say that my local area, which would be regarded as an area of deprivation, the local environment has improved greatly

When Labour came into power in 1997, they stuck by Tory spending plans for the first two years. My mum, a pensioner received a whole £1 increase in her pension. Labour have provided better increases in state pension, winter fuel allowances and Free telvision licences over the age of 75.

I'm also worried about the Tories' policy on Northern Ireland - so called secret meetings with Lord Cranborne and both unionist parties in January 2010 doesn't fill me with confidence that Cameron will act fairly for all communities in NI.

Lastly, like many mums, I am exceptionally grateful to the services provided by Sure Start. I had no support networks in London when my son was born. Sure Start and their facilities were as important to me as they were to my son. Through Sure Start, I meet people who lived in my locality and made several women, who will be life-long friends.

I don't like, or agree with everything Labour have done - who does, but I can't think of any policies that the Conservative party have told us to date that I could recommend.

WilfandWilma · 19/03/2010 19:25

I've voted Lib Dem or Green in the past, however, this time I will be voting Tory - without much enthusiasm. Gordon Brown has wrecked our economy; he refuses to acknowledge how serious our economic situation is at present or how he intends to deal with our frightening large national deficit. I wish he had the honesty to admit that the banking crisis was, in part, caused by his failure to regulate the banks properly. He was actually quite happy to turn a blind eye to what the banks were doing during the boom years as they provided huge tax revenues for him to fritter away.

The prospect of another five years of him as PM is too awful to contemplate (especially with his side kick, Ed Balls, as Chancellor). I have toyed with idea of voting Lib Dem again, however, I think if there is a hung parliament they are more likely to form a coalition government with Labour which means we might be stuck with him for another five long years - he has already made it quite clear that he will not do the decent thing and resign if there is a hung parliament. The Labour party have made three attempts to get rid of him and have failed, so as far I'm concerned the only way of ensuring he is ejected from No 10 is to vote Conservative on 6th May.

ninah · 19/03/2010 19:34

because as a lone parent on a low income a Tory government will judge and despise me and other 'minority' - they wish! groups like me
because I don't trust their economic or social policies
because they are still the party of privelege
and because the Camerons have eery egg shaped faces

gaelicsheep · 19/03/2010 22:57

Skihorse - very good point. It's unfortunate that no one on here (myself included) is old enough to remember what happened to cause "the last time". But FGS you can all see it happening again in front of your eyes and you're still in denial!

tethersend · 19/03/2010 23:05

Because the very idea of voting Tory is laughable
