I won't be voting Tory because...

  • My children go to a Surestart children's centre and I don't want that threatened when they start their slash and burn;
  • The schools in my area are going to get their Building Schools for the Future funding soon. The torys are saying no BSF project is safe unless all the contracts have been signed, so if they get in, my children's future secondary schools are likely to stay over-crowded and sub-standard;
  • This report in the Evening Standard today about Boris Johnson's raft of broken promises since he was elected makes me think that a future Tory government is going to deliver on little that they are promising now.

Not sure who I will vote for though. I think I voted Green last time.

Tethersend: given that we have a proven liar masquerading as Prime Minister of our country and given that he and his policies have pushed us into an economic maelstrom which may result in all of us ending up in the toilet, why is it laughable to vote conservative?

This country deserves better than being fed the lies and spin that are regurgitated on almost a daily basis now by certain elements of the labour govt (aided and abetted by that bastion of "impartiality" the BBC) I think that Cameron deserves a chance. I hope he gets it and proves his critics on here and elsewhere wrong

expatinscotland · 20/03/2010 11:13

'why is it laughable to vote conservative?'

Because they're liars, too.

expatinscotland · 20/03/2010 11:14

And people who deliberately tax-dodge, the way non doms do (and I don't care if it's legal, so is the drug Miaow) are thieves.

girlylala0807 · 20/03/2010 11:15

I wont be because im Scottish and that woman who is head of the Scottish party really grates me.

tethersend · 20/03/2010 11:21

Tashtodd, click on the link.

BTW, politicians lie. All of them. Even David Cameron

scaryteacher · 20/03/2010 12:30

That'll be the Labour non-doms as well then expat?

I can remember the last Labour govt - I was 13 when Mrs T came to power, and I would not vote Labour because this lot are like the Callaghan govt except it has taken longer to implode. NuLabour was just Old Labour with a smiley face. They are still in thrall to the Unions and still resent those who create money. They are still taxing people 'until the pips squeak' using indirect taxes to achieve this.

MadameCastafiore · 20/03/2010 12:49

Because I don't trust them with the economy is the funniest reason I have ever seen not to vote Tory!!!

Have you seen what the current government have done to our economy and no matter how much they blame the bankers and the rest of the world one of the biggest feck ups they made is not regulating the system properly taking the responsibility away fron the Bank of England and giving it to the FSA but populating the FSA with the same dullards who couldn't do the job properly at the Bank of England!

Labour are not publicising the cuts they will HAVE to make to get the economy back on track, the Greens and the BNP don't have workable economical policies as they put other issues infront of the ones that matter and the Lib Dems can promise what the feck they like to get people to vote because they have a cat in hells chance of getting in and having to implemant the policies.

Our kids will be spouting the line about not voting Labour as they grew up in this era - it goes round and round and round and the best thing we can all do is put the wheels in motion for a change of government and really the only one that we are likely to get other than the bunch of useless prats in at the moment are the Tories.

UnattendedToaster · 20/03/2010 13:03

I wouldn't vote Tory because of my fear of what they'd do if they got in, still remember how bad Thatcher was and don't think they're any different etc etc BUT even without all that I'd be tempted not to because they're just so annoying!

Any time any of them speak it seems obvious to me all they care about is themselves and their cronies, all they do is try and flash smiles and if anyone asks about their policies they get really evasive and even start saying that's for revealing after the election! As if we're children who don't need to know! Their party line right now seems to be nothing more than 'vote for us because we're better than Labour' which is pathetic.

I'll be voting Lib Dem - yes, they can promise the earth because they won't have to deliver on it but it's not just a purely national issue - locally where I am things got so much better the day we got a Lib Dem mp that I can't help thinking if they've won my trust locally, their national policies sound good (regardless of actual intent) then they can happily have my vote.

Also annoyed with the 'main 2' for constantly ramming it down everyone's throats that it's a choice between them when that's insulting the system. If everyone voted for another party changes would be made (and it would be hilarious to see) - I know practically that won't happen but that's the choice of the voters not an automatic certainty. But that's another rant

scaryteacher · 20/03/2010 13:43

Having emailed Liam Fox about defence issues, I got a straight answer about what I wanted to know.

Did any one notice yesterday that Mandelson was hinting at income tax rises post election?

missmoopy · 20/03/2010 13:52

It goes against all I believe in. I CANNOT vote Tory, it would physically hurt!

NightLark · 20/03/2010 14:48

Because like so many others, I remember the last time.

Because I think it is government by the rich, for the rich, and everyone else can go hang.

Because I fundamentally disagree with their world-view.

Because I don't think there is a single one of them with any inkling that for some people, it's not just a matter of trying harder and life will be great- we're never all going to be 'entrepreneurs'.

Because I think public services matter, and the tories seem to think they exist only as a drain on the disposable income of the wealthy.

missmoopy · 20/03/2010 19:05

NightLark, I think I love you! Great post!

KernowMother · 20/03/2010 19:34

I won't vote Tory because I believe in universal services, a universal welfare state and I believe in Sure Start. I believe in a society where the strong help the weak and want my children to grow up with those values.

I also remember being the child of a single parent the last time they were in and my mum and family being treated like scum. Whilst I am in a better position these days, I am not prepared to elect a government that despises the less fortunate.

David Cameron insists he heads an all new Conservative party, however, all the old cronies who were behind Thatcher are still there lurking on the Conservative benches.

Davi Cameron is a Trojan horse within wich all the old Tory principles hide and I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.

SpringHeeledJack · 20/03/2010 19:44

I read an article in the paper today which began: "DC will today invoke Lady Thatcher's resolute leadership...[and] confront the vested interests holding Britain back, citing bankers, trade unionists and the educational establishment" and my blood ran cold

the first one I get (tho I sincerely doubt Cameron will do much about them)- the other two??

I won't be voting Tory because I remember the last time. I know the gap between rich and poor has yawned under Labour, but it is surely going to widen much much further and faster under the Tories. I can't bear to go back to that overt "fuck you" culture

Labour have done some proper shit stuff. Specially Iraq (tho the Tories backed them to the hilt on that one)- I am no apologist for them (specially Blair) BUT

I had my first child in 1997 and till now none of my kids has had to grow up under a Tory govt. I desperately hope it stays that way

Riven! did you get anywhere with DC in the end?

peachylovesherpoochy · 20/03/2010 20:23

I won't be voting Tory because of George Osborne - I don't usually take unreasonable dislikes to people, but I literally can't stand the man - he makes my skin crawl and I want to vomit when I see him on TV!

Poohbah · 20/03/2010 20:58

I really want lembit okpik...a semi drunken wanna be (shagging anything that is stick thing and moves) celeb back representing me??????????

ShadeofViolet · 20/03/2010 21:17

Peachy - I too have a unexplained dislike of George Osbourne. His voice grates on my nerves and I think there is something shifty about him.

I wont be voting Tory, mainly because of the SureStart issues - mine has been a lifeline. I also worry about the future of Tax Credits.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 20/03/2010 21:25

I'm Scottish and remember the last time. Nuff said

Tortington · 20/03/2010 21:26

its the wrong shade of blue - blue sucha c old colour - they should go for a more turquise

duckyfuzz · 20/03/2010 21:30

because of cameron and osbourne and espacially gove, he really is clueless
because I remember the last time
because I just can't do it

gaelicsheep · 20/03/2010 21:32

So many people have said "because I'm Scottish". What sort of an answer is that? Are Scots not allowed to form their own judgements or something?!

ShadeofViolet · 20/03/2010 21:38

If the Lib Dems got rid of Clegg and made Cable leader I would vote for them in a shot.

Joolyjoolyjoo · 20/03/2010 21:44

gaelicsheep- because the last time the tories were in power they treated Scotland like crap eg trying out the hated poll-tax on us first. They traditionally have little support in Scotland and they know that, so they waste little time and energy on understanding the differences between a SCottish rural community and a busy London one, IMO. The vast majority of Scots are working class and as such tend to support parties that they think will work for them, and that isn't the tories!
