Contradiction between 3 days of supplies v defence spending

It's all a bit weird. We are now supposed to have 3 days of provisions in case "something" happens. The Government has told us to. The German government has given a comprehensive list to the German population for supplies per capita but they have said for 10 days.

And yet there's no corresponding rise in UK defence spending and nothing has been done on an urgent basis. Despite the former Defence Secretary resigning because we aren't defended adequately. Whereas European defence spending is increasing massively in many countries. We haven't secured our borders either even though we are aware that Russian subs are hovering over our sea cables.

If we are being told we need to survive on our own, potentially presumably this is due to an attack of some sort. So why aren't we rearming quickly so we try and deter this attack from happening?

This does seem very disconnected thinking. We always assume governments know what they are doing but I'm not confident this one does.

They're not the only two you've mentioned though are they?

I didn't say they were conspiracy theories. I said that you had presented a
"conspiracy theorist grade list of threats". It's the torrent of random 'possibilities' that makes it all so Henny Penny.

What other conspiracy theories have I raised other than an enemy attack or a natural disaster like a solar flare?

And why not list various possibilities? Or do you know something the rest of us don't and know which on the list is not random?

Always find it funny when people attempt to use "Defence Secretary/MOD moans about lack of money" to imply the UK is virtually undefended.

For a start, every single person to hold that Office would say precisely the same no matter which time period you are talking about, the MOD has certainly held that line forever.

Shall we cover the number of times some Government Minister has gone on record as saying that their department had plenty of money, was ticking along just fine, and there was no reason whatsoever to even contemplate upping the spend?

For a thread that was ostensibly about defence spending and the link to recent government advice, there is an entirely predictable, and tedious amount of "small boats/Russian invasion" drivel. I suppose we were overdue one of these threads since there hasn't been one in approximately 24 hours.

Interesting but it contains the almost standard spin about what investment will do for the industrial base, in passing the electronics industry and of course hard working familes, language designed to appeal to the back benches.

"the figures demonstrate how the government is placing the defence industrial base at the centre of national renewal, with rising investment helping to generate opportunities in towns and cities across the UK, increasing household incomes and giving people more breathing room."

The big question is how many more troops, aircraft, and other defence related systems - the stuff that actually goes bang and actually might act as a deterrent is this rise actually going to be procure.

They probably spend very little on stuff that goes bang.

As you know, if you have X billion for air defense, you can spend it on planes, people, faculities, defense of facilities and so on. Things that go bang are low on the list, because they are expensive, and not likely to be used. So fiddle the numbers to make it look good.

And then there are the political spends. We need to buy F35, to keep the US happy, and also becuase we make a lot of it. So a chunk of that goes into UK jobs.

But if we had the things that go bang a the top of the list, then we should be buying SAAB jets. More bang for the buck. And we can spend the money saved from not buying F35 on more pilots, training, and ammo.

I think the Navy is in a terrible condition because of this. Top of the range capital ships, but not enough money to put them to sea.

And then drones came along. And that turned the whole thing on it's head. And the drones to me are a bit like the PRC thinking over Taiwan. The PRC said we will deal with the US carriers by firing thousands of missile at them. It just needs one hit. But the US kept on the technology side. Low numbers of expensive kit, v lots of cheap.

And as we are seeing with Iran, that "lots of cheap" is working. Because the USA can't make enough of the very expensive THAAD and Patriots.

Not to point out the obvious but there is the English Channel.

We are being invaded and taken over by illegals via the English Channel!!

If we get attacked it will be cyber, not bombs. Have you not seen the recent press about the cyber attacks on other countries with their supermarket fridges/freezers being hacked? Shelves being emptied all over because food ruined. Ireland got hit too, so I'm sure it's only a matter of time before the UK is targeted.

We haven't been told that though. We assume it's something like that. We hope it is. But we haven't had this sort of specific advice before despite us regularly having natural disasters. I hope that it isnt a military attack obviously as we won't last long.

3 days is the time you need to be in the house for nuclear debris to fall to the earth.

If it goes nuclear, then 3 days, or even being inside isn't going to save you......................

The Channel didnt protect us against William, nor Viking Raids, or WW2 bombing raids, or small boat crossings nor drones nor hacking into essential services………🙄

Because the government can't afford to rearm they are billions in debt- the cost of 3 days provisions is shouldered by individuals , so is not comparable to rearming.

Summerhasarrived · 03/11/2026 18:49

No one can ever know what’s going to happen from one day to the next. Probably sensible to have the items on the government 3 day supplies list if you can afford to buy them and make sure you’re never running too low on essential medication plus think about how you’d check on family members/friends/those in need without use of a mobile/tablet etc. Not sure what else we can do really whether there’s a disaster imminent or not…

I quite liked this concept.
In the event of nuclear attack: day one home, day two home, day three home, day four Waitrose.

if they had said two weeks supplies there would be a big uproar about CoL and people would expect a government handout to fund it

You should try watching the news, you might learn something.
Thousands of single men of a certain age, are crossing the English Channel and are invading our country, illegally. They are not wanted, they do not contribute anything to our society.
Anyone who wants to come into our country legally, work hard, contribute to society, pay taxes and integrate are most welcome!

whateventoputhere · 03/11/2026 16:33

We are not being invaded. Stop it.

That very much depends on your definition of the word “ invade”, and, of course, on wilful blindness.

Again, nothing but pig-ignorant drivel.

The people crossing the Channel are not "invading", they are not "illegal", and you are not the arbiter of who is wanted and who is not.

You're clearly just yet another brainwashed, ignorant moron spouting Reformist crap 😂

Yet who is the one who has descended into name calling?

FindingMeno · 03/11/2026 21:03

Have I read that right?
You think it's 3 days because we're facing a nuclear strike and after 3 days we can all come out of our houses and it's business as usual?
LOL.
That's the best one I've heard 😂

That'll be me, largely because I've no more patience for engaging with these sorts of posters as if they actually merit respectful responses.

If you are going to repeatedly post ignorant, factually incorrect, far-right drivel, then I'll call it out for what is and name you for what you are.

We have a legal system for entry to the UK. Why do the boat people from France choose not to go through the UK legal process?

As I am such an ignorant and uneducated person, Perhaps, you could explain which part I have got wrong?

Basic common sense advice from the UK Government has been blown completely out of proportion to ‘prepare for Armageddon’.

Couldn't agree more. Storms are becoming more prevalent and cyber attacks are also possible so being prepared for power/water cuts makes good sense. I livd through the cold war and no one was this panicky.
