Waiting in the U.S.

I beg the forum’s indulgence, since I know that the U.S. election is not directly of huge importance here, but, still, Trump’s contamination oozes into the broader world.

I don’t know if other Americans feel similarly, but for me this is like being suspended in limbo, waiting to see if the Democratic party will triumph over Trump’s Republican party. I’ve done the protests, I’ve done the volunteering, I’ve done the donations. And now it’s just a matter of waiting. I watch the statistics (Republicans have a tendency to denigrate polls if they’re not in their favor, but now even the prediction markets are forecasting a Democrat sweep). I read about the daily outrages, including his efforts to block votes. But, really, just waiting.

The main amusement is watching the vicious mockery. He’s being heckled at his own rallies. He’s sounding more and more unhinged, and it doesn’t help him that he’s backing some bad candidates. Lately he’s talking about scrutinizing men’s asses.

I’m finally daring to feel hopeful. But we’ll all be glad when this if over (even though we’ll just leap ahead to 2028).What an awful way to live.

Apart from your basic flawed premise imagining Dems support the violence against Gaza - you are eligible to vote in the U.S., and apparently Dem/Lib, but because you disapprove of ONE Dem policy, which doesn't affect us directly, you are too offended to stand against the the most bigoted, bullying, blood-thirsty, fornicating, lying, vicious, vulgar, vindictive, selfish, self-serving, self-aggrandizing, self-dealing, meretricious, murderous, grifting, greedy, cruel, corrupt, heartless, ignorant, criminal president of all time, even on local city/county races that have nothing to do with foreign policy?

So well said. Imagine being all uppity about one point that's not even correct, and missing the chance to reduce the power of a president who has caused so much harm.

I like Newsom, but I think Jon Ossoff in Georgia is the best bet in 2028. He’s an absolute powerhouse, and doesn’t have Nelson’s baggage.

The bit that I’ve seen of Ossof is impressive. Nor is he afraid to call out Trump.

I became a citizen last year after having had a green card for decades, partly because I didn't feel safe with a green card any more and also because I am so angry about what Trump and his enablers have done. Interestingly, my lawyer told me that lots of people were doing what I was doing and when I went to my (lovely, truly welcoming) citizenship ceremony I saw people of multiple ethnicities in the room with me and I thought that probably very few of them would be voting for him. So I am holding my breath and crossing all digits today.

USA elections affect the UK. Trump's Iran war is causing high oil prices, inflation, higher interest rates worldwide. He seems detached from reality. I hope he can be stopped from doing any more harm.

That's just lovely and thanks for posting your journey. There's such a lot of goodness in the US we all should hold on to.

There will have been lots of good people in that room with you but unfortunately there is a group that once they are safe and sorted are keen to pull up the drawbridge.
They are so desperate to have the American dream that they forget who they are and where they’re from.
You find a lot of them are ardent supporters of the big orange guy even after their relatives have been deported.

To be fair, I am sure we all have in laws like that.
