Waiting in the U.S.

I beg the forum’s indulgence, since I know that the U.S. election is not directly of huge importance here, but, still, Trump’s contamination oozes into the broader world.

I don’t know if other Americans feel similarly, but for me this is like being suspended in limbo, waiting to see if the Democratic party will triumph over Trump’s Republican party. I’ve done the protests, I’ve done the volunteering, I’ve done the donations. And now it’s just a matter of waiting. I watch the statistics (Republicans have a tendency to denigrate polls if they’re not in their favor, but now even the prediction markets are forecasting a Democrat sweep). I read about the daily outrages, including his efforts to block votes. But, really, just waiting.

The main amusement is watching the vicious mockery. He’s being heckled at his own rallies. He’s sounding more and more unhinged, and it doesn’t help him that he’s backing some bad candidates. Lately he’s talking about scrutinizing men’s asses.

I’m finally daring to feel hopeful. But we’ll all be glad when this if over (even though we’ll just leap ahead to 2028).What an awful way to live.

PS, I'm sitting with you @MsAmerica awaiting the outcome. You're not alone over here.

I’m sitting this election out. The Dems support the genocide in Gaza and the war in Iran. I felt really let down by them.

People staying at home in protest contributed to Trump being in the WH house.

Maggiethecat · 01/11/2026 12:07

I really wish I had more faith in the US electorate.
Trump showed them who he was in the first term and they voted for him again.
I can only hope that gas prices mean more to them than anything else in the world 😵‍💫

Remember how MAGA was formed, a mix of white Christian nationalists and the tea party movement. Anti taxation, anti government.... they are basically angry extremists.

Getting rid of Trump won't stop it but what it does is give democracy a chance of survival. These people don't actually believe in democracy they want chaos.

But there are too many people who don't want to be taxed to death and so will not vote for the Democrats if they go too much to the left like they are doing now.

Lots of people floating voters voted for Obama bc he came across as a moderate. Kamala Harris didn't which is why she lost and the new lot are even more to the left of her.

Talkinpeace · 01/11/2026 14:34

UK resident dual national here, already voted in New York

I have been INCREDIBLY disappointed by the lack of pushback from 'senior' Democrats against the shutdowns
but the option of not voting does not exist for me.

I have my fingers and toes crossed that there is enough of a Blue Wave
to allow the Senate and Congress to restart doing their jobs

then the Dems need to get their backsides in gear FAST with a shortlist of good candidates for 2028

and support the youngsters like Jonah Wheeler who will be the next generation

DuncinToffee · 01/11/2026 14:35

Are they moving more to the left or does it only feel like that because Trump is moving further right?

Good question.

placemats · 01/11/2026 20:23

Is Trump fully cognisant of what's going on?

Apart from your basic flawed premise imagining Dems support the violence against Gaza - you are eligible to vote in the U.S., and apparently Dem/Lib, but because you disapprove of ONE Dem policy, which doesn't affect us directly, you are too offended to stand against the the most bigoted, bullying, blood-thirsty, fornicating, lying, vicious, vulgar, vindictive, selfish, self-serving, self-aggrandizing, self-dealing, meretricious, murderous, grifting, greedy, cruel, corrupt, heartless, ignorant, criminal president of all time, even on local city/county races that have nothing to do with foreign policy?

Sadly, I fear that you're correct. People who care nothing about Trump's war crimes or domestic lawlessness are all huffy because of gas prices.

Personally, I think she lost because she wasn't a good candidate.

Taxes in the U.S. are overall relatively low, but if people think taxes are too high, they should vote against Reps who keep giving money away to their cronies.

I think probably Dems started inching to the left with the appearance of the feisty elderly Bernie Sanders a few years ago, fiercely advocating for improving wages and healthcare. But it's also seem true, to me, that Dems are undermining themselves by getting side-tracked into leftie tangents.
Still, left-wingyness is far less than rightwingyness.

Darlene Graham is actually in South Carolina, but apparently this is also a close contest in what should be a very reliably red stage.

I agree with you on her ineptness though. I heard her speak and dumb and rocks come to mind.

Thanks, I keep mixing up that North/South. From the little I heard at the Jack Smith hearings, she seemed to be chiding him for not being nice, as if she doesn't understand what lawyers do.

I’ve got my fingers crossed for you. I’m going to tune in to the early coverage (starts late night in the UK) and see how long I can last! I still have a strong nauseous memory of watching the early bits of ‘24 and going to bed feeling wretched, then waking up to the terrible news that that unspeakable bastard had won again. I’m not sure I could bear it if this one goes the same way. Here’s hoping.

I have a feeling that quite a few results won't be known until the next day (or later), and some of the close ones will be contested.
But I'm pretty sure there will be enough good news that I wish I were going to an election house party!

I’m heading out to vote shortly!! Can’t wait!

However I live in a blue stronghold (went 82% for Kamala) so I sometimes feel my vote doesn’t mean much.

I will be on tenterhooks on Tuesday night. I’ll be watching Michigan, Maine, Iowa, Kansas, Alaska, Ohio, Georgia, Texas and even Mississippi! Some of those I never thought would be in play. I’m still not convinced we can win in red states, but hopefully at least the purple ones will turn blue.

I’m also concerned about what the idiot will do. I do think he’s going to attack Iran again by Wednesday.

You were right about Iran.
Holding my breath for you here in London 🤞🤞🤞

Thank goodness there are sane people like you over there @MsAmerica. I can’t imagine living among Trump voters.
Here’s hoping for some big flips around the country!🤞🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼

I’m here, now live in sunny California (making up for many years of British rain). Idk, I’ve been burned by the hope and media on the democrats too many times now. I think they will get the house, not the senate. But I hope we will find out quickly, It’s going to be a bit of a disaster of an aftermath. IMO the democrats need to get away from the far left and put a moderate candidate through if they are to have any hope in two years. It will probably be Newsom.

I knew it because he’s going down with this election, so doing something stupid was inevitable.

Appreciate the support. I’ve lived here a long time and am only a citizen because I wanted the right to vote, which I exercise every single time.

I hope you’re wrong about Newsom. He’s certainly charismatic, but he won’t be my choice.

questiontime1234 · Today 04:44

@Lizzieregina I hope I’m wrong too, he’s not ideal. Buttigeg if I’ve spelt it right would be much better, but is gay and I don’t think middle America will vote for that (sadly), and if the last few elections have shown us anything it’s that we need to find someone to unite the country who isn’t an orange megalomaniac. Crossing everyone for tomorrow. I hope there’s not rioting and people getting hurt.

You mentioned my favorite choice!! Buttigieg, but I agree that Americans are not ready for a gay man. But he’s such a brilliant mind. I think there’ll be quite the casting call for the nomination! Not like 2024. Hopefully we’ll shake someone good out!

Posting from the amazing Canada with no wish to ever become the 51st State - watching with interest. We miss our trips over the border for lunch and shopping but won’t go over again until a change at the WH.

Op I am very invested and English.

I listen to the daily beast podcast and all the various Americast and RIPUS etc.

And of course my Instagram feed is all James talarico 😊

Fingers crossed the Dems get the blue wave.

I like the NPR Politics podcasts personally.

I like Newsom, but I think Jon Ossoff in Georgia is the best bet in 2028. He’s an absolute powerhouse, and doesn’t have Nelson’s baggage.

The results of this election will affect the whole world. We are waiting too. Solidarity with Americans who are taking a stand.
