Has Andy Burnham ended up as PM somewhat under false pretences?

Please note that this is from a left wing Labour supporting paper.

It turns out that the marvellous redevelopment of Manchester that was the central plank of his credibility to become PM was triggered by the fall of Mubarak in Egypt in 2011 and what were effectively, or previously close to, bribes set up by the then Tory government to retain our massive defence contracts with the Middle East.

The owners of Man City, recently found guilty of breaking well over 100 financial football rules, are heavily involved. UK developers were excluded from access to large development contracts. Man City was sold a deal including the naming rights to the stadium, owned by the council, for £750k a year when professional rights brokers estimate the market value to be between £10m and £15m a year for the name alone.

The question is, did a local Mayor with no experience outside politics and only a tiny amount of experience of cabinet roles, (3 jobs in 3 years), get to be Prime Minister without a challenge on the strength of the development of the centre of his city that he actually only had a small part in creating?

Nice.

You must love spending time with them.

Why? Not everyone likes children.

At least she didn’t have to try to be third time lucky to be elected leader of her party.

True. And agree @Eraserewindre the economic reality.

Burnham didn't need to campaign to become Prime Minister.

He had to campaign to get a seat in Parliament, without which he could not become PM.

And he had a campaign running inside the Labour Party to stop anyone running against him.

That’s not what the More In Common research in Makerfield found. Beth Rigby did some interviews there and was told the same.

It depends on what question is asked. If you ask if people would like to rejoin they say yes, mostly because they want easier holiday travel. If you ask if they want freedom of movement when pictures of Ceuta are on the TV and paying 47 billion a year membership fee and giving up the pound and taking the Euro and helping ball out France when it goes under the picture is a lot less clear.

Well you assumed Makerfield is still a predominantly leave area. That appears not to be the case.

The barrel was well and truly scraped when it came to electing KB as the Conservative leader.

Which is obviously not what you implied or meant in your post I was replying to.

I've never had any faith in the opposition leader KB. She failed to hold down any misinsterial roles when in Government. Became leader against the traitorous Jenrick and is leader of a shadow cabinet and Parliamentary Party that has experienced the worst losses of seats in Tory history.

Her attack dog attitude is about as convincing as a damp squib. She has nothing to bring to the table except the same old tired nonsense. There's no verve, no exuberance and certainly no novel moves.

She failed to hold down any ministerial roles when in Government

Nonsense.

Lord it's exhausting debating at this level but I don't like being rude and ignoring people who have quoted me.

I called Makerfield "a big Brexit constituency". Brexit is done, is a fact, and Makerfield voted heavily for it. It is a big Brexit constituency and regional TV reports up here suggest it is still very divided.

Brexit is done. Re entry back into Europe is just beginning.

eta Don't look back in anger. The way forward gives us hope and optimism. Be positive.

Whereas research carried out by a professional market research company suggests Makerfield’s views on the EU have changed.

@placemats "She failed to hold down any misinsterial roles when in Government "

Cobblers.

Badenoch held multiple senior and junior government roles between 2018 and 2024, including Secretary of State for Business and Trade and Minister for Women and Equalities. For a complete chronological list of her ministerial appointments, please consult GOV.UK.

Multiple being the optimal word here.

It's explained above how many junior and senior ministerial roles KB held within a 5 year period in office. Pretty poor by anyone's metric. Substandard even. Couldn't hold down a job and moved on constantly.
