Why are public electric car charging costs still so high?

With a new generation of electric cars now in showrooms it's never been a better time to go electric. 0% PCP deals, huge range of cars to choose from.

While I can charge at home for 3 pence a mile the only thing I can't get my head around is the cost of using public chargers.

Some are nearly 80 pence per KWH, to me that's robbery when I'm paying 5 pence per KWH at home.

Why isn't there a charging network supplied by utilities or even better state run network. There must be millions of people with no way to charge at home and are being denied access to electric cars.

Our parish has just installed three points at our village hall that charge 11p per kWh. That covers the cost of the installation and any maintenance, but gives our villagers who don't have a drive, a more reasonable way to charge their cars.

We had a grant from govt, we did a survey and it was the most asked-for facility.

I agree, the difference is huge. I have an EV but I would never have got it if I couldn't charge at home. Could it be because of the speed of charging? A full charge for me at home takes about 5 hours, versus 1.5 hours at a motorway service station.

Possibly, but you would think it would be less than some off the fees being charged. I had a look online and it appears some charge up to 92 pence....instaVolt

The infrastructure costs for high speed chargers can be considerable, not just for the chargers themselves but also for the installation of the high power electrical grid connection.

But it's also just capitalism. If people will pay 80p/KwH then that's what the fee will be.

That's probably the issue...also the land is often leased so that's another cost. You would have thought they could install low cost low speed ones on lamp posts
