Why are we building millions and millions of houses?
According to me, a falling birth rate =less people= less housing demand.

The houses being built near me are allegedly for these poor first time buyers who can't afford a home. And yet, they are 5 bedroom houses with a study for wfh. I smell a rat somewhere.

If there are less people in secondary education, there will be less people coming into the housing market in 12 years time. Don't forget, the boomers are dying off.

I haven't seen how the immigration figures are expected to affect the housing market. Government seems reluctant to release those figures.

I also think demographics need to be considered. Lots of divorcees move to smaller homes. There are more single people than in the past. There is a need for smaller houses, as well as the dream 5 bedroom 3 bathroom ones.

We are not building "millions and millions" of houses @HarshbutTrue2 . If we were, we wouldn't have a housing shortage.

Labour has pledged to build 1.5 million houses over 5 years. The birthrate might be falling and baby boomers will begin to die off but that doesn't change the fact that at the present time we need more housing.

Apparently, the kids who did it were very able and did well in the subject. Bridget pulled the funding for Latin teachers, so I suppose the last cohort are just heading towards their gcses. Future cohorts will not have the opportunity. If that is not a spiteful, nasty, dumbing down of education, tell me what is. God forbid that a Labour government would let kids study an 'elite' subject.

I think there's a huge issue with modern foreign languages being on the decline. I would be inclined to tackle that first rather than Latin.

They dont need to throw these 2nd rate expensive homes up all over the country causing absolute chaos.

We don't and will never have the infrastructure. They just need to
close the borders.

They should then prioritise British people including helping youngsters getting jobs.

Until they stop wasting tax payers money people should no longer be paying taxes and should be offered a rebate.

If the borders were shut tomorrow we would still need more homes built. I agree with you that some of the standards on homes being built need upping.

I have said that I think it is regrettable. In my own experience those that can tackle Latin do well other languages. It is foundational to many of our European languages but also, because of the discipline of learning grammar, helps with confidence in Greek, Hebrew, Mandarin, etc.

It is strange to me that we are giving fewer opportunities and not more.

To give more opportunities, the government needs funding.

Yes, I didn't know about the Latin so I appreciate being informed. I do not buy into the 'spiteful' rhetoric (and couldn't even copy that part from the post) - it is about funding, as you say. I still think it's a loss - I know people who benefitted hugely from the opportunity.

If you learn Latin you can easily pick up other languages, such as Italian, Spanish, French.

At my school, everyone did French, some did French and German, the best kids did Latin and French.

I know a little Latin. It's useful for kids who want to go into medicine and the law. More importantly, it stretches the more able kids. This government doesn't want to stretch clever kids. They don't want good education. They want to drag everyone down.

I give Burnham 2 years. He is in a honeymoon period. Once even more taxes kick in he will be unpopular. The Labour party can't get rid of him. The electorate wouldn't stand for it.

There will be an election. All those shitty backbenchers who got rid of starmer will lose their seats. I think a labour lib dem coalition is a distinct possibility. He is already cosying up to ed davey.

Equally if you can speak Italian or Spanish you can usually decipher Latin. It’s a two way street. We appear to be able to train doctors and lawyers without teaching them Latin in school, it must be a miracle.

Does Burnham, even now, harbour a sense of injustice that his desired pathway in life forced him to live somewhere other than where he was born?
