Farage resigns as Clacton MP and will contest the by-election

Nigel Farage is resigning as MP for Clacton, triggering a by-election in the constituency - which he will stand in.

He says he wants the people of Clacton to decide whether he is worthy of representing them - not the mainstream media who he feels constantly attack him personally as well as the party he represents.

He has

Can a political party pay for a by-election it is fielding a candidate for? Wouldn't there be a massive conflict of interest? Reeves will probably say it can't be done and Farage can strut about and say "well I did offer".

Has a party ever paid for a by-election,?

Then so should Burnham!

True

Burnham has no personal fortune. He has never had a real job.

Nice one. He must know that isn't allowable spending for party funds and can't actually happen 🤣

Yes. The idea of a political party (or individual) bankrolling an election is fairly obviously problematic.

TemperanceWest · 07/07/2026 16:45

BIossomtoes · 07/07/2026 16:41

I doubt very much that electoral law would allow that. He’s showboating as usual.

Absolutely.

Crocsarentslippers · 07/07/2026 16:47

If the people of Clacton are stupid enough and bigoted enough to vote for the king grifter as MP once, then they will certainly do it again.

What he stands for far outweighs how corrupt and lazy he is as an MP in their eyes.

MrsShankly · 07/07/2026 16:47

Farage isn’t politics
Politics should uphold democracy
Reform are snake oil salesmen not a political party

No it can't be done. It's rather shocking that apparently neither he nor "the party" he has asked, don't know what is and isn't admissible spending for party funds.

But of course they do, they know they're at no risk whatsoever of having to cough up, whilst pretending that they made a good faith offer.

Anyone who thinks this a) could happen and b) is a good idea needs to have a wee sit down and think it through.

nicepotoftea · 07/07/2026 16:52

Following this precedent can Corbyn do whatever he likes as long as he keeps getting re-elected in Islington? The Greens in Brighton?

At least when Trump claims he can ignore law and regulations he can refer to a mandate from the entire country.

TemperanceWest · 07/07/2026 16:55

I am keeping my fingers crossed that Count Binface is the only other candidate to stand. It would make Farage look a complete fool.

KittyCorncrake · 07/07/2026 16:57

Badbadbunny · 07/07/2026 16:42

This.
Did you demand that then…?

TooBigForMyBoots · 07/07/2026 16:57

NellieJean · 07/07/2026 16:26

Why will it give him a mandate to carry on. He’s accused of wrongdoing it’s for the investigation into his many gifts to come to a decision not Clacton. It’s just a distraction tactic out of the Trump playbook. If they have any sense the other parties won’t parties won’t put candidates forward leaving him to fight it out with Count Binface.

Id love to see Count Binface in Westminster.😍 I seem to remembering him having some sensible policies that I agreed with.

The spirit of democracy is not to quit for the sake of re standing and waste large amounts of public money.

And particularly to use this in order to avoid accountability.

true but when its a part of it, etc

Then so should Burnham!

To be fair, Burnham stood down from his post to apply for a different job.
Farage is standing down from his job so he can "reapply" for the same job.
Madness - and the rules should be changed to disallow these sort of antics - if nothing's changed then the status quo should prevail.

sillypossumsmum · 07/07/2026 17:05

50% good news then

Silverseahorse · 07/07/2026 17:08

I can't see anyone standing against him..it will be to humiliating to loose against him .
Probably a one horse race

You're discounting Count Binface who has already indicated he will fight the seat.

I think it’s Count Binface and no one else. Not sure I would be pleased if I lived in Clacton.

If the other parties had any sense they'd let him run against Binface and no other candidates. Then wait until he gets recalled, make a pact, probably for just the Tories to run and maybe Restore. Throw everything at it and get him out.

Twiglets1 · 07/07/2026 17:13

I still think the Conservatives will have a candidate. Bit less sure than I was earlier but still.
