So the admittedly boring but truly decent PM has announced his resignation and the egotistical, pompous Burnham will doubtless become PM. God help the country

This.
Starmer is a decent man and one of the few politicians who isn’t in politics for his own gain. So what if he doesn’t have presence, it shouldn’t matter as long as he is doing his job effectively and with integrity. The press have hounded him relentlessly and too many people don’t look beyond sensationalist headlines. It’s a real shame Starmer is not able to serve his term in office and actually make sustained impact on the mess the tories left the country in.

Well said.
You don't usually see stuff like this make the main newspaper headlines though.
(With the exception of the Mirror which seems to be the only one left for Labour)

I've been saying that too. It would be better for the country (and my bank balance as I work them) if we have a general election.

God knows what the Labour Party see in Burnham. He's literally been an MP for a matter of days and they now want him to run the country. He isn't even sworn in yet, he has no record of anything right now, he isn't a cabinet member. He tried and failed to become leader twice before.

Yet people like you are clamering for a woman hating grifter like Farage to be PM, who has never been in cabinet, failed to become leader 100s of times,

user378657486 · 22/06/2026 11:37

Could people please learn to spell Rayner correctly?

Badbadbunny · 22/06/2026 11:37

Imlyingandthatsthetruth · 22/06/2026 11:27

Presumably the labour back benchers think they've got a better chance of keeping their jobs by ditching Starmer. Instead they've guaranteed a GE and back to Tory, or worse, coalition government and what's left of the Labour party will be back in the wilderness, again. What a bunch of clowns.

Could be the end of the Labour party. Look at how the Libdems imploded after their fiasco of a coalition. No guarantee that any political party can survive the last few decades of turmoil. Likewise, the Tories look to becoming history due to their shockingly poor result in Makerfield!

EasternStandard · 22/06/2026 11:37

Gibstub · 22/06/2026 11:35

That is not how it works. Seven prime minister in 10 years - no one called for an election when they swapped and switched on Tory watch.

That’s not correct. Rayner called for an election.

Gibstub · 22/06/2026 11:38

Exactly. The UK population vote for whoever the press/media want in power. We are a weak minded nation, easily led.

TentaclesTime · 22/06/2026 11:39

A truly decent PM. Really? Our country is on its knees. The public are crying out for a general election so that we actually have some hope of trying to make Great Britain great again!

"On its knees" good grief calm down.
The country was never going to change over night, but it is slowly getting better.
The only ones shouting for a general election and the ones with a Nigel Farage picture on their mantlepiece. And personally I don't trust the judgement of anyone who doesn't see what a Snake that man really is.

Too many people hung up on who's the leader, who's not and whether they've got a big personality or not.
I might not have voted in a new PM, but it's the PARTY and their politics you vote for. Or should be.

Well in the next General Election, let all the Parties take collective responsibility-maybe three or four spokespeople and then let the winning Party announce who will be PM a week later.

According to you, it won't matter who they choose as long as that person won their seat for the Party.

In some ways, that would be better than the cult of personality but rightly or wrongly, that isn't the way it works here. We vote for a Party in full knowledge that the leader of that Party will be the next PM.

Now, we have Wide Boy Andy that already manipulated a By Election, simply in order to grab power and people are wondering what his policies will be. That's right-wondering-because they will not be the same as the elected PM.

Probably not as a lot of people can’t spell Keir correctly either…

Not sure which political party is to blame for the educational deficits, though.

Do you actually know their names, or just playing some ridiculous agenda game with loaded language? As you're kind of proving the point that it's just full of bollocks on social media and too much noise.
That they need to just get on with the job instead of listening to all the baying nonsense.

Gibstub · 22/06/2026 11:42

Allmarbleslost · 22/06/2026 09:53

It's just utter madness. The last thing this country needs is another period of political instability. What difference do people think Burnham will actually make??

Burnham - left leaning. More increased benefits for starters. More illegals as well. You think Starmer was bad - this will be far, far worse for hardworking people. BUT the people of this country get the government they deserve.

SatsumaDog · 22/06/2026 11:42

Not a Labour voter or a fan of Starmer, but things wont be any different for Burnham. It will be the same all over again. People want a magic wand and there isn’t one.

MN was constantly calling for a general election when the Tories chopped and changed leader. Most labour MPs did as well, my local labour MP was very vocal about it and there’s lots of tweets resurfacing from them today.

Spelling is elitist and anti working class, as the woman herrself would tell you.

I imagine one could spell her name in many different ways-maybe beginning with T and or C and people could still make a fair guess as to who you were talking about.

LilacReader · 22/06/2026 11:43

I'm disappointed actually - I know, one of the few! I think he was blamed for a lot but Labour has only been in power 2 years and it's not been long enough to work on the problems left to them. I think the only good thing is 'hopefully' Labour will get someone in who is liked more and so will stop Reform getting into power.
(Before anyone thinks I'm a Red through and through, I have always voted Tories and first time Labour voter last election.)

Angela reeves I think went crazy on twitter when there was a conservative change of leadership saying a general election MUST take place as it was disgraceful to have an unelected by the people leader at the top…. Is she going to eat her words now…

The last pm to go in and out with a GE was Ted Heath. We seem to have survived in the meantime.

Actually in a very short space of time under Kier Starmer, Labour began to make some positive changes - which rarely get reported properly eg:

  • the renters’ rights reforms - all good giving tenants (and their pets!) more protection.
  • NHS waiting lists down in just 2 years
  • Rightfully Supporting Ukraine
  • Kept us out of joining in warfare in Middle East
  • Some impressive standing up to Trump and vastly improved international presence
  • school breakfast clubs
  • free childcare rollout
  • significant important workers’ rights reform
  • 500,000 more kids receiving free school meals
  • highest defence spending since Cold War
  • Steel and some railways under public ownership
  • youth EU travel scheme
Plus closer ties to Europe and some signs economy slowly progressing despite Trump’s Middle East interventions.

Yes, some hiccups, but overall, solid policies and a genuine commitment to helping those who genuinely need it. Perhaps not great at media friendly sound bites, but a willingness to listen, consult and adapt when appropriate. Anyway the public and the Labour Party seemed to turn on a principled statesman who gets the job done. More fool us.

I’d like to say Thank you to Sir Keir and his family. In my opinion he did a far better job than the last seven ( plus) prime minsters. I’m happy for his family that they get to start a new chapter.

Starmer's only real crime is being a Gordon Brown PM when the country is crying out for another Blair. Hopefully Burnham might succeed in conveying good news better.

I will never understand the level of vitriol and hatred the man receives, even ignoring social media manipulation so many can't stand him.

SpidersAreShitheads · 22/06/2026 11:48

There has been a persistent campaign within Labour to get Starmer out and get King Andy in.

I can’t even begin to put into words how much I despise this kind of back-stabbing politics. Burnham is going to get the job unchallenged by the looks of things.

Whether you agreed with Starmer’s policies or not, he was a decent and principled man who tried his best to do the right thing. He’s not a prime minister who hid in a fridge to avoid tricky questions. He’s handled the orange toddler beautifully and trod a really tricky democratic line well.

Burnham seems to believe his own hype. He’ll blow whichever way he thinks will bring him success. And the way he’s gone about this just shows he’s a snake. I don’t trust him and with his stance on women’s rights, he’ll alienate a lot of female left-wing voters who were only just returning to Labour.

Labour seem to view him as some kind of messiah. He’s just your average slippery politician who’s just better than average at talking a good game. He’s been talking about stopping division and bringing unity while simultaneously running a campaign to undermine the PM and get himself the top job. Fucking hell!!

It’s not about whether you think Starmer is your ideal candidate, or even Andy Burnham. It’s about the fact that a decent man has been hounded out of his job. This is the very worst aspect of politics and needs to stop. There will be incessant calls for a GE election now - just look at this thread. It’s a shitshow.
