…..is apparantly a Reform policy. That’ll piss off the CofE-not being able to sell redundant buildings….

Well, it depends on the church. There are some darn ugly ones in towns that are little used now, so if they were repurposed that would be fine. However, many are beautiful structures containing interesting features - I’m not religious but love churches - so I think it is important to ensure that they are maintained even if congregations have dwindled.

They are already listed...Church of England is the church which has lost 90% of its historic congregation yet their churches buildings are still being preserved through mainly grants or private donors....what does really bothers you or not...and are you a church lover or not

Why would it stop them selling? Loads of listed buildings are bought and sold every year.

The prospective MP for Makerfield thinks this will prevent change of use….

Yes as a result of the (unconsecrated) church building which sat empty for a few years and was purchased by a community group.

The community group did put a prayer room into the building. They also use it as a community resource for all including running a food bank.

But of course it would make much for sense for the building to sit rotting away!

You mean it can't he changed to someone else's God. Even though it's supposed to be the same God.

No all churches are not listed. About a quarter are not. There are some really shoddy boring churches of no artistic merit and it would be ridiculous to list them.

3WildOnes · 29/05/2026 18:54

I know my church is already a listed building. As are most CofE churches.

Interestingly, the video announcing this has been fact checked. The Church Reform said had been turned into a mosque is actually a food bank and associated storage and a prayer room.
