What Starmer should do….

He should say to the Cabinet “Right. You either support me or you don’t. If you do, shut up. If you don’t bugger off. I’ve got a stonking majority so I can and will replace all of you. So decide. You’ve got 12 hours. After that, we’re drawing a line under this whole episode and moving on.”

I reckon he’d get kudos in the country for that too.

He also needs to get a grip on comms.

It did occur to me that he could easily say to the MPs that are questioning him, "back me or I will call a general election". From a personal perspective, he has nothing to lose at the moment. But it would be a very high risk strategy for the country.

I'm also unclear as to whether we'd really end up with an effective government if he carries on while none of them think he's up to the job. It would probably just delay the inevitable tbh.

He could-but I don’t think he’d need to. He just needs to stand up to the Cabinet. He also needs to get in some advisers- Alasdair Campbell could take a sabbatical from podcasting….

I agree. He should stand firm

PotatoRasta · 12/05/2026 10:24

I agree! I hate when parties start changing PM mid way like the Tories did. It’s very destabilising and we look like laughing stock globally.
Yes the local elections was disappointing but they still have a few years to turn things around. The ministers need to back Starmer and let him get on with it. I don’t even like the guy but the world is already in disarray with all these silly wars and economics so the last thing we need is more uncertainties at home.

If the cabinet is the pick of the bunch, then who will replace them?

If they are not the pick of the bunch, why are they in the cabinet?

Upstartled · 12/05/2026 10:26

He won't get any kudos from the country. The country widely dislikes him. It will appeal to some Labour supporters, mostly those who are prepared to tolerate him long enough to have a chance of getting Burnham in.

I thought advisors were part of the problem. As in too many, and too much power ?

And when things go wrong he blames the advisors. I think really, we elect the politicians to run the country, not to hire advisors to tell them how to run the country. That could be a line from Yes Minister :-)

As a sort daft example. When Starmer and crew were in Beijing. they all went out for a meal together. And they were using the plates wrong. I was a bit annoyed with that. And I know it sounds daft to be annoyed, but it was all over Chinese media, basically laughing at them.

I thought at the time, that they will have a pile of advisors about China. It would have taken 10 minutes on the plane to have the etiquette explained to them. Really simple stuff. But either that did not happen, or it was ignored. The result was, the CPC got some great propaganda photos. Such simple things really should not happen.

Lammysaurus · 12/05/2026 10:32

Most cabinet members won't resign in that scenario - but if they did, who's to say there aren't capable back benchers who'd shine if given a chance? Plus he has his whole pick of the Labour Lords as well. People said they wanted change, so embrace it.
