What is the best way to vote to stop Reform at next GE

HedgeKnights · 09/05/2026 06:43

As a more left leaning voter, I am happy to vote Labour, Lib Dem or Green. I am worried Reform will win the next GE and think Lib Dem might be the way to go, to keep them out. Not just as a tactical vote as I do like most of their policies.
Do people who don't want Reform in power need to to come together now behind one party, or is it more difficult than that

Nigel Farage will be PM after the next General Election, it’s irrelevant which of those you vote for. It happening.

keepswimming38 · 09/05/2026 06:52

Just vote tactically. I will be doing. They are the party of ignorance and hate.

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 09/05/2026 06:52

Totally agree with @SayItLikeItIsLetsKeepItReal

NoYouCantComeToTheWedding · 09/05/2026 06:54

You think voting Lib Dem will keep Reform out?!! Good luck with that.

FatterthanBarbie · 09/05/2026 06:55

Your one vote isn't really going to make a difference. You need to rally national support for your "tactical voting" plan.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 09/05/2026 06:55

There's already a website which tells you how to tactically vote based on your area. It's still extremely unlikely Farage will be PM. Aside from the reality of voting under FPTP system, there's also the fact that Nigel is workshy.

Alexandra2001 · 09/05/2026 06:59

We need a PR voting system.

Not to keep Reform out at all but to ensure that the millions of people who vote for 5 main parties now, all get a voice.

FPTP might have worked with just 2 choices but not with 5, any Govt that is in power with just 27% of voter support will never work.

SpiceGirlsNeedAComeBack · 09/05/2026 07:01

There’s still 3 years left, a lot can change in 3 years.

Nobody predicted Labour would correctly get in, but they did.
Labour could do a complete U-turn after this, they know they now need to severely limit people coming into this country… they could kick Starmer out and someone who actually has the balls to leave the ECHR could come into power. You never know it wouldn’t be the first time a party has changed tatics while in power.
Nigel could fuck up and say more stupid things (like he did about the NHS needing to be privatised and then back peddled!) etc etc

I wouldn't be so sure. Reform failed to win two national elections yesterday. They threw lots of money around campaigning but still didn't win.

Exactly this. Far more likely to end up with a hung parliament than reform have full control.

EasternStandard · 09/05/2026 07:10

It’s ages away, you won’t know until then and it will depend on your area.

Shedmistress · 09/05/2026 07:14

instead of 'voting tactically' maybe try getting involved with your local MP or the 'correct and allowable parties' to devise solutions to problems so that there is a better option?

True and council elections had a far lower voter turn out, at around 35 to 40%, in a GE it'll be 65 to 70%.

Reform did well to get their base out but they need to increase that, atm its falling.

We will! See you in 2029.

HoraceCope · 09/05/2026 07:19

surely it depends where you live
there will be tactical advice nearer the time

keepswimming38 · 09/05/2026 07:19

Encourage more young people to vote as they tend to be less racist and more tolerant. As a teacher I’m going to be encouraging them.

HoraceCope · 09/05/2026 07:20

in some places the tories lost to reform
so it all depends

Why do you think that? Reform currently only have a few MP’s and do you not give the vast majority of the voting public more credit not to vote for them?

Good point - start teaching your DC’s right from wrong.

MPs were elected two years ago. Things are very different now. On the basis of yesterday's results, the Labour MPs in the constituencies I live and work in will both lose their seats to Reform.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 09/05/2026 07:35

Greens are far left and investigating 30 candidates for anti-Semitic views. They should be consigned to the far left bin. Antone slightly left is bonkers voting for them, If it’s an old labour area, you have a problem. Labour voters are often secretly rather right wing. Look at the voting patterns in the NE. Any party that meets immediate issues with false promises will do! If it’s in an old Tory area, they might come back as they are slightly less tarnished than Labour. Or you have lib Dems who are mildly left. However these parties will split the vote in our FPTP system and might well let Reform in. The Greens won’t care as they went this left leaning chaos!

FlyingApple · 09/05/2026 07:36

There's no tactical vote that can stop it.

Cameron had a disasterous local election result, went on to win and increase his majority.

Local Elections are like by-elections, low turn outs (ie die hard supporters) and often mean little in terms of a GE election result.

Underthinker · 09/05/2026 07:49

I predict Reform will fall back a bit over the next couple of years. We are in the middle of a surge of further left and right parties. Reforms big USP is immigration control, and for around a year now Labour have been trying to take that issue more seriously, I think that will very slowly win back some traditional voters.

But yes tactical voting will be massive in 2029 as everyone tries to figure out how to block their least favourite party.
