They had a perfect excuse.

I agree but I think the world, or rather the U.S., is seriously lacking in diplomacy right now so everyone else has to do even more. If the trip had been cancelled it would have appeared petty.

It's not up to them; it's a state visit. They go on behalf of the government.

Starmer may not be particularly wise, but insulting the US by cancelling a state visit timed for the 250th anniversary of its independence would be spectacularly insulting.

That's why it's so perfect that they had an excuse with the shooting!

It wouldn't have seemed like pettiness, just an abundance of caution!

They need to do this sort of stuff, to justify the immense privileges they have. I’m glad they went. Keeping the US onside is important. I absolutely loath Trump but unfortunately he’s the world’s most powerful leader. I’m not a fan of Starmer but he’s definitely done a good job keeping out of the Iran war. Sending the royals to butter up Trump at this point is a sensible strategic move.

It's not about the individual people involved, after all these years how on earth can people not know how it all works

While totally understanding your point, I disagree.

Everyone strategically buttering up Trump is just prolonging this and allowing horrible things to escalate.
