Trump calling Greenland “Iceland” and the rest

Notwithstanding the fact he is a corrupt, ignorant, sex-offending, narcissistic, lying, bullying, dictator-loving, Putin-supporting, Islamophobic, arrogant, ungracious, rude man-toddler…

even putting all that aside if you can…

Calling Greenland “Iceland” 4 times in his rambling speech yesterday… can you IMAGINE the response of Joe Biden had done that?!!

Where is the uproar (about all of the above) from within the US?

I was seething that Gavin Newson had the gall to say it was down to European leaders to stand up to him. What about the bloody US Congress!!! They are the only ones that can actually stop him (and Vance). Why are there no mechanisms to curtail his wild and dangerous actions? Why do they tolerate it?? Where are all the reasonable Republicans?? At least in the UK we have a Leader of the Opposition, PMQ’s, Parliamentary committees and opportunities for the PM to be grilled and held to account.

All I see in the US is SILENCE, appeasement, or Gavin Newson doing a podcast.

My answer was to your assertion that Trump is after Greenland because it isn't a "real" country. (It is a real country). And it isn't "owned" by Denmark anymore either. It is an autonomous territory with its own government. I wasn't entering a discussion of which country would be better to annex, which is a rather weird tangent to take. Also, there has been already some talk about making Iceland the 52nd state, although the politician who said it later said he was joking.

I know it is a real country - I have been there and I have never disputed that fact. I have no idea why you seem so keen to insinuate otherwise.

I just don't happen to think that the fact of it being an independent country is relevant.

As for whether Trump genuinely has designs on Iceland or not, or whether it would even be a good strategic move for him if he did, who knows? The guy is a lunatic and doesn't think like any normal person would.

Im genuinely not insinuating you dont know what Iceland is! But for some reason you seem really keen on letting me know? Im just teasing you. I do assume a basic knowledge on here of what is a country and what isn't. Of course you know Iceland is a country.

But the fact it is an independent country unlike Greenland is a factor in my view. He clearly sees Greenland as a leasehold territory. Run by another country. Quite different from Iceland. (As you of course know).

So how do you think he sees Canada?

Presumably you are aware that Canada, like Iceland, is a country?

Greenland is of course a country. But it is a territory of another country and its citizens are Danish citizens. Unlike many other countries. It is different.

Just joking about other countries to annex. But if Trump is looking at individual random countries to go after in his ridiculous mind. there are better ones to chose. In my opinion.

Well...if he decides to go after Canada he will. No different from any other country. Hes clearly lost the plot so theres no predicting what he will see in any country hes got his eye on.

There isn't a lot congress can do. The President has pretty substncial powers and can even begin military action without any requirement for congress to approve it.

Even in areas where congress has the power, the Trump administration has just ignored it. He is acting like a dictator in that he has ordered actions be taken even if outwith his powers as he knows it will take the Supreme Court months to get around to determining if it was legal or not. And even then they have packed the Supreme Court with right-leaning judges who are far more likely to come down on their side.

The War Powers Act puts in place a number of controls on the President’s military powers. Congress has the power to control him if it chooses to. It’s choosing not to at the moment.

Didn't he also talk about a potential agreement over Greenland being 'consummated', when I think he actually meant confirmed or ratified?!

Tbf to the man, agreements can be consummated. Usually relating to completing a transaction. He definitely sees Greenland as a property asset.

Indeed. Which was precisely my point in the first place.

Personally I think the so called checks and balances of having 3 arms of power which has been used as a demonstration of democracy and to avoid absolutism are in fact completely useless when put to the test. Congress, the senate and office of POTUS.
Trump is a useful idiot on behalf of extreme right wing. His cognitive decline is obvious and behaviour clearly narcissistic. The most dangerous human beings are this sort of psychopath who also hold power.

Pretty much this!

Newbutoldfather · 23/01/2026 08:26

He was definitely confused as he referred to the stock market going down over Iceland.

Rory Stewart had his moments and I really liked his book, but he is a big buyer into every Trump conspiracy theory.

I do think Trump is starting to show cognitive decline, which is a bit scary, but he is nowhere near as bad as Biden was.

I think Rory Stewart was still saying it was a mistake but a different kind of mistake. He was speculating that it wasn’t just a totally random “Trump doesn’t know the difference between Greenland and Iceland” but rather that Iceland was in his head because of discussions he’s been having around it, and thats why he said it when he meant Greenland.

Yes, that's how I understood it too.

Neither of us has a clue. Let's face it. The world is being run by a Big out of control Orange.

Absolutely. And therefore, nothing is off the table.

True, but unless used as an adjective (e.g. a consummate professional), it's overwhelmingly understood to mean one thing, isn't it?!

A bit like the word 'ejaculate' can quite legitimately mean to confidently exclaim something, and 'intercourse' can genuinely refer to a discussion... but... but... !!
