Does Trump understand how tariffs work?

Just seen that Trump is giving us a higher tariff from 1st February. Do we think he understands that this is actually costing American buyers more?

Precisely his plan surely?
To encourage Americans to buy more American goods

EspanaPorfavor · 17/01/2026 17:35

He’s also announced tariffs on certain eu countries without taking into account that the EU market is one market so you can’t just add tariffs to a select few.

AnotherForumUser · 17/01/2026 17:39

Maybe. But if he does understand it's the buyer who generally pays that extra cost then I'd surmise he is playing to his gallery of voters and supporters who he reckons don't know or don't care.

REP22 · 17/01/2026 17:39

He thinks he's "punishing" us and others for sticking up for Greenland. I expect the PM will grovel to him and beg for supplication. The whole Trump sh~tshow sickens me.

Teajenny7 · 17/01/2026 17:50

I would like the Scottish Governmnt to freeze Trump's assets in Scotland or to compulsory purchase his golf courses.
His military should not be allowed to use Scottish airports or military bases.
I think 25 cents an acre would be a fair amount!

Overtheatlantic · 17/01/2026 17:50

i think American consumers who buy EU goods are too rich to care about the additional costs due to increased tariffs. “Buy American” is a huge movement and has been for decades. This will have an impact on cars and luxury retail items like LV.

Purlant · 17/01/2026 17:53

Trump doesn’t know how anything works! For someone who is scared of foreigners (especially from developing countries), he’s trying to reduce the vaccinations in his own country whilst stopping contraception aid in developing countries. Basically he’s killing off his own population whilst simultaneously increasing the population in countries he’s afraid off. Must make complete sense to him!!

Anyahyacinth · 17/01/2026 17:56

I think loads of folk think tariffs are paid by country of export rather than the country they arrive in ...i.e the U.S.

Trump is all about relying on a lack of education

Careful. He’ll probably talk about invading and taking Scotchland next!

There has already been speculation!

SilverSurreal · 17/01/2026 18:15

I read on Facebook a post that said "tariffs are putting me out of business, but I am pro tariffs"

🤔

OneRealOchreHiker · 17/01/2026 18:15

I understand the premise of what he’s trying to do, but it would take years to manufacture enough iPhones for example, that’s if they even could.

Hope Starmer doesn’t give in…

hahagogomomo · 17/01/2026 18:21

I suspect all evening plans have just been cancelled for eu plus our leaders, starmer seems to be in Paris a lot recently! They will be discussing a joint statement. Personally I think USA to have all military bases terminated with immediate effect might make congress take notice

Hiptothisjive · 17/01/2026 18:22

Completely missing the point. He understands fine he just doesn’t care.

He is politically motivated to be the best and most popular president ever and that means having enemies - ICE & tariffs for example.

Create a problem only you can solve. The democrats let in all these people stealing jobs and rising crime in your area (I don’t believe this it’s just the narrow Ive he is creating). So I’ll solve it and only I can. I’m amazing…..

Punish others and make the seem they are the ‘bad guy’ and then you are the saviour. He understands all too well and that so the scariest part of all. He doesn’t care what it will do to Americans.

Please don’t think hes informant or doesnt understand - this plays into the narrative.

Did you mean to phrase things like that ?

Sadcafe · 17/01/2026 18:28

Someone needs to get Starmer a copy of love actually, specifically the part where the Prime Minister talks about the friend whose now become a bully.

He's a petulant child who has a tantrum when he doesn't get his way. He revolts me and has destroyed so much in such a short period of time.

That American administration hates us and we have to accept it's over and then never be trusted again.

Bullies should be faced head on

Given that two of his wives were eastern Europeans he's not scared of certain foreigners... only the wrong kind it seems

IdentifyingAsAWoollyMammoth · 17/01/2026 22:08

All sane countries should withdraw immediately from the World Cup and the 2028 Olympics. It will hit the US financially and embarrass Trump, and that's something he hates. The more the rest of the world treats the US now as a rogue state the better. Greenland is the thin edge of a wedge.

Sadly neither of these things will happen (although has in the past). Trump's support is Make America Great Again. Huge numbers of other countries treating the US as a pariah won't make America Great again.

If they do happen, then prepare for Trump to take us out of NATO. Frankly, Putin must be sitting back and laughing because Trump is doing what Putin wants to see happen. If Trump tried to pull the US out of NATO and half the country is boycotting the two biggest sporting events in the world, Congress, I believe, would actually move to remove him.

It gets bumpy from here but it's now time to take a stand against the orange bully. Allowing him to get what he wants now will basically give him permission to carry on as he likes.

Pretty sure the big economists have actually said its worked to their surprise so far. The guy on sky news definitely has. Donald isn't an idiot but he is dangerous.

Are you having a laugh?😂
Do you know how tariffs work?🤔

Trump knows how tariffs work: they cost Americans money and destroy US farms and other businesses. But he doesn't care about any of that. Tariffs are the way he "punishes"🙄 countries that won't give him what he wants.

So yeah @OneRealOchreHiker Trump knows how tariffs work. On the plus side his supporters have learned how tariffs work and are not happy. Better late than never i suppose. And the rest of the world has learnt how he uses tariffs and have been making alternative arrangements with nations other than the US.🤷‍♀️

bombastix · 17/01/2026 22:35

Yes he knows. Tariffs affect ordinary Americans. But if you announce them and then renege, you or your friends can make a lot of money from the uncertainty.

In the interim, the percentage of goods trade held by China goes up and up. The US goes down, a trend that just accelerates.

Cornishclio · 17/01/2026 23:07

Meanwhile China and Japan , the countries which own the highest amount of US federal treasury bonds are gradually selling them off. The UK also owns a large amount so we should do the same. That leads to higher borrowing costs and destabilises the dollar. If countries move to a different currency for buying oil that would have a much bigger effect. Wars are no longer fought militarily but economically.. closer ties with China like Canada will isolate US further.

bombastix · 17/01/2026 23:10

China has been doing this for six months. I think they cut their exposure by something like 500 billion dollars.
