Good on Kemi!

I'm no fan of Kemi Badenoch, but I'm even less of a fan of Robert Jenrick, and I'm rather delighted to see that she has sacked him and withdrawn the whip before he could jump to Reform.

She has definitely had the last laugh here. He must be spitting bullets!!

I’m a soft lefty with no home. I like Starmer but the Labour Party has too many uneasy bedfellows and a tendency to need to pander to loud voices to keep their wholeness.

I do really like Kemi’s energy but don’t know enough about her policies. She’s becoming impressive enough for me to do a bit of research eg not happy about the pps comment about the X situation and Grok. I want somebody who will stick up for basic decency.

Who cares about what happened in the 70s and 80s? It’s 2026.

Ask the poster who said this is the worst government in living memory.

Was a debate with another poster.... plus as Jenrick says, the Tories, his party of choice, helped wreck the country "for decades" i believe he said...

bemoresloth · 16/01/2026 12:52

I would have respected Badenoch more if she had sacked Jenrick a few monhts back for racism.

She made the right decision but he made it easy for her with leaving his speech lying around.

The Tories were in power for four out of nine years in the 70s - that’s almost half the decade. Heath’s performance is entirely relevant.

Labour government 1974-1979
Winter of discontent 1978-1979 (so Labour had had 4-5 years to stuff everything up)
1976 IMF bailout.

I mean...nice try to rewrite history and try and blame the Conservatives but its fairly well established that Labour managed to achieve the mess themselves.

Luckily Margaret Thatcher came in and saved the day. I do hope something similar happens in 2029.

Alexandra2001 · 16/01/2026 10:38

Again wrong, Cons in for 5 years, 1970 to 1974 and again in 1979.

During which time they trebled energy prices, gave us strike after strike and a 3 day week.

See my post above which will hopefully help you.

With all due respect, the only one re writing history is you.

Heath (Cons) was in for 4 years, he gave us a collapsed economy and a 3 day week by the end of it, massive economic issues.
But Heath had spiralling oil prices, they increased 4 fold.... so hardly surprising he had problems, which carried on into much of the 70s.

Labour came in, 2 GE in a 12month period, before they got a small majority, didn't even gain proper power until 1976, by which time it was too late and they decided on the IMF.

Thatcher had North Sea Oil, yet she gave it away in tax cuts, nothing on infrastructure, nothing saved for a rainy day (no wealth fund) yet still managed 2 deep recessions, plus sold off almost all public services, she even tried to sell off the NHS....

"Saved the Day" or caused many of the problems we all see today? not least in an almost total lack of council housing and the water industry.

Neither the Tories or Labour covered themselves in glory, both inherited issues but to simply say Tories good, Labour Bad is just ignorant.

That period essentially sums up why socialism fails and why Labour cannot be trusted with the economy. Unlike the subsequent Conservative government which basically saved the UK economy until Blair came in on a Conservative economic high and messed it up. We all learn about it at school. Well, the schools where the teachers weren't captured by the left.

Unfortunately we dont have a similar rescue package at the moment.

If schools are teaching such a skewed view of history, it’s high time the curriculum was revised.

I couldnt agree more. It's high time we stopped lying to kids and giving them a distorted lefty view of the UK and its past. They could concentrate on how we abolished slavery to start off with. And give a balanced view of the Empire.

Oh and don't teach kids people can change sex.

bemoresloth · 16/01/2026 13:38

The UK curriculum last changed in 2014.

Badenoch's mentor was involved, not exactly a leftie

Yes but most teachers identify as left wing. And many can't resist bringing their politics into the classroom. They are led by the Number 1 Lefty of all, Bridget Chippy Philipson unfortunately. So watch the UK plunge back down the league tables.

I don’t know about disgraced, but Jenrick seems most angry about the Tories’ immigration record.

He was the immigration minister.

Well, he failed to win the leadership contest and then got sacked for secretly plotting against his leader and getting found out. So he hasn't exactly covered himself in glory.

He is an embarrassment to himself and Farage has previously described him as a fraud. So make of that what you will.

It makes you wonder who will be next to defect to Reform. I saw Nadine Dorries (!) saying that there would be a limit to who Farage would accept and that Reform wouldn’t just be taking anyone, proving once again that irony is dead.

NF did say at the press conference that a defector from Labour would be announced next week. Presumably he's signed the contract otherwise he wouldn't be so definite.

Maybe it's Keir. He's had enough.

Sherbs12 · 16/01/2026 15:59

I think Farage said ‘Labour figure’ so there’s speculation that it might not be an MP. I’ve seen people discussing possibly Blue Labour’s Maurice Glasman or Kate Hoey (who actually left the Labour Party in 2019) - neither would be a surprise, or a big catch. Could be a small fry, looking to be a bigger fish in a small pond. Or was it Wakeford who defected from Tory to Labour, he might flip back. Who knows?

We’ll have to wait and watch the next Reform media spectacle to find out. I feel like at this point, Reform are somewhere between a cult and a pyramid selling scheme with the razzmatazz of a wrestling federation. I guess when your unelected leader helped improve his profile by eating kangaroo testicles, or something similar, on I’m a Celeb, that probably makes sense.

Well it's certainly the only way he's going to stay relevant after the next GE.

Are you an expat

Yes

Are you a Brit living abroad?

It seems strange to me that people who have chosen to lead their lives in another country would still be voting in the one they left.
