Luxury cars removed from the motability scheme

too little too late. As a full time worker I can’t afford to run a car, let alone a luxury car. Motability should be a standard car - available in automatic and manual, an option for wheelchair users, and that’s it.

Luxury cars removed from Motability scheme ahead of budget

The programme has been criticised for allowing people with non-visible disabilities to get luxury vehicles as part of their welfare. The chancellor wants to support the British car market with the new measures.

If there was no extra advantage to using the motability scheme then people could take their PIP payments and lease cars in the normal way. There would be no need for any discussion, there must be a benefit over and above the pip payment to using the scheme. For some that will be the adaptations, for many it will be because it's cheaper to use motability versus an equivalent lease (rightly or wrongly). The savings must be coming from somewhere, whether that's bulk buying discounts or VAT exemptions or something else. It certainly doesn't appear to be coming from paying the CEO less!

If anyone on this thread actually honestly gave a shit about the ‘money’ they’d be banging on about the very shady and obscured amount of profit the four big high street banks that own Motability are making from the scheme.

But they don’t. What they care about is disabled people, that they see as very much less than them (irregardless of whether they happen to also be working taxpayers), getting something that they themselves can’t/don’t have.

They’re not only bigoted, they’re also quite alarmingly stupid.

I keep talking about the Jeremy Vine show today but doctor on there who used to do assessments for Motability was saying the reason the scheme is so open to abuse (and he said it absolutely is) is because PCP and HP finance is so costly now. Motability is definitely cheaper.

I completely agree that child benefit should be stopped, too. I think it’s a joke that working people get very little help these days but everyone else is being handed money

No one but you should get money👍

Clue. It was the Jeremy Vibe show

Disabled people are working people!
(Parents are also working people.)

Astounding how often this needs repeating isn’t it?

ColourThief · 25/11/2025 13:57

I wish people would get into their thick heads that they aren’t giving these cars away for free. Its no different to leasing a car.

Ah but they just must have a bitch about anybody getting something they can’t.

Nevermind the fact that they don’t have to live with a lifelong disability, if someone else does then they must live by their bare bones and with no joys or luxuries whatsoever.
That’ll teach them for having the audacity to have a disability and need benefits!

This thread is full of nasty, mealy mouthed, bitter commenters that seem to think everyone must struggle and suffer because they themselves can’t afford a luxury car and they’re able bodied so therefore more important!
Can’t someone just fashion a car out of a cardboard box and some roller skate wheels?
That’s all the disabled deserve, surely?

I despair, honestly.
I’m not disabled, thankfully. I also don’t begrudge those that want to pay a huge advance payment for a nicer car.

You don’t all have to have everything everyone else has and you’re not entitled to more just because you had the good fortune to be born able bodied and able to work full time.

Maybe, if people can’t afford luxury cars they should work harder?
People do enjoy spouting that line off to people who are on benefits or unable to get a mortgage, so go ahead and follow your own advice!
Maybe drink less takeaway coffees?
Apparently that’s the answer to everything, so there you go! Solved it for you all!

The whole thing needs overhauling. Too many scammers . Its too easy to claim all these benefits

Why do you need help? Besides the obvious reason that you’re quite greedy and more than a little envious of <checks notes> people with disabilities?

Don’t take the rags as gospel, you may actually learn something about real life!

I can't quite decide if this thread is bringing all the trolls crawling out from beneath their bridges, or if so many people really are this stupid, ignorant and self-centred. 🤷‍♀️

but the “weekly leasing charge” is £77 a week, or £240 a month. Leasing a Merc or other luxury car would cost a lot more than that. My mum’s Yaris is £500 a month for crying out loud

That’s why in addition to paying the basic lease cost those wanting to lease a more expensive car paid more on to of this, just like anybody else has to pay more to buy/ lease something more expensive. It literally makes not one penny of difference to the taxpayer.

Motability is a charity.

It negotiates with car manufacturers to buy their cars at a discount, thereby keeping order books full and thousands of people in work. It then leases those cars to disabled people for three years. After three years we hand back the car in, invariably, excellent condition which Motability sell on for probably more than they paid for it.

It is in Motability’s interest to make sure the cars are looked after, as this increases their profits.

It’s cheaper because of economies of scale. The taxpayer isn’t “subsidising” anything. If the scheme was abolished entirely the welfare bill would remain exactly as it is now. Why are people unable to grasp this basic fact?

The latter.

MarbleHunt · 25/11/2025 14:04

Restricting it will also mean far fewer second hand cars are available and therefore prices for them will increase significantly. Enjoy.

Yes, those pesky children. Whose parents you seem to think are not “working people”. Confused Do you think people take an 18 year holiday when they have a baby?!

Children are clearly the source of the country’s economic problems.

One wonders where you think “working people” will appear from if you think children are something that should be discouraged.

I was paying £750 a month for a Volvo XC40 on the salary sacrifice scheme/Tusker.

Wow. I only got my XC60 is September and its £354 including VAT a month.

@CryMyEyesViolet
Can you point to how the government is funding Motability- just one source.

I’m not sure what point you’re trying to make, but to cite one source and element of government funding: 2/5 of the value benefit to the claimant comes from tax concessions to the Scheme that are not available to other drivers.

zurigo · 25/11/2025 09:38

You're missing the point. They shouldn't have been giving out luxury cars AT ALL!!! If you require a car because you are disabled there should be basic cars available - nothing fancy or flash or luxurious - just safe and reliable and inexpensive. There are plenty of cars that fit that description.

No you’re missing the point - no-one was ‘giving out luxury cars’. The end user paid for the premium models.
