too little too late. As a full time worker I can’t afford to run a car, let alone a luxury car. Motability should be a standard car - available in automatic and manual, an option for wheelchair users, and that’s it.

Luxury cars removed from Motability scheme ahead of budget

The programme has been criticised for allowing people with non-visible disabilities to get luxury vehicles as part of their welfare. The chancellor wants to support the British car market with the new measures.

Better still. Put disabled people in stocks. And hessian sacks 👍

Then all the bitter and twisted can have a party 🥳

Not luxury hessian burlap though the weave is tighter and it’s softer. I hope you mean just the basic cheap and rough hessian otherwise it’s not fair !

Yesimmoaningaboutbenefits · 25/11/2025 12:05

How pathetic do you have to be to resent a disabled person using their OWN MONEY to choose a car they actually want.

Should disabled people not be allowed to buy designer clothes? Not allowed premium or branded food items? Not allowed Nike trainers, only supermarket cheapys? Not allowed days out? Not allowed holidays? Not allowed to drink?

Why tf does anyone have a problem with disabled people spending their OWN MONEY on whatever they choose? You wouldn't dare suggest that for any other marginalised group.

On one hand motability cars are a vital lifeline for poor disabled people on benefits - who clearly have such severe needs that they qualify for these benefits and generally claim limited ability to work. On the other hand motability cars are going to people who clearly have large sums of cash available for deposits on luxury cars.

Well its non means tested so ....

twolittles · 25/11/2025 12:06

Tatemoderndrawyourown · 25/11/2025 11:58

in that case the taxpayer shouldn’t be paying for this person given that they have huge amounts to pay for luxury cars.

Means testing disability benefits is a totally different subject.

RainbowBagels · 25/11/2025 12:06

Apparently it's not so much the actual car that's the issue but that the scheme comes with all the insurance and servicing paid, which would be far, far higher for a mercedes than it would be for a Ford for example.

HelenaWaiting · 25/11/2025 12:07

Isouf · 25/11/2025 09:46

But that doesn't make sense though. So someone is getting help from the government to buy a car (which i agree is essential these days)...and then off you go to put extra money you have to drive a fancy car?!
Surely you would keep that extra money in savings for future use related with the disability that led you to ask government for help in the 1st place.

A car is essential, a luxury car is not.

I would consider it a basic human right to spend one's own money as one sees fit. Thus far, this also applies to people with disabilities.

PlatinumEdition · 25/11/2025 12:07

Overthemhills · 25/11/2025 11:19

@PlatinumEdition
If you know people using a Motability car to work from directly - not travel to employment which is entirely permitted- report them to Motability.
Where do you propose they keep the car? In a car park?

Edited

I don't care where they keep the car but I care that the car which is supplied for the person with the disabilities is being used for someone else's gain.

Can you explain why it makes a difference to you whether they get a Skoda Fabia or a BMW?

The cost to the taxpayer is exactly the same.

The availability of 'luxury' models does though incentivise fraud which is far tooprevalent on Motability.

How many of the anti-motability arses on this thread, know tradesmen who are ripping off the taxpayer, by working cash in hand, are they reporting them and starting threads, of course not because they benefit from others dishonesty.. The small amount of money that would be saved by ruining the lives of the disabled more than their disability does, is dwarfed by income tax evasion. Also see every other thread about my ex won't pay me anything, because he hides his income.

I agree that there are lots of ways that the government could cut spending - as you say, fraud is huge. Fraud and error in the benefit system is estimated at about £9bn per year for example. I think it’s terrible that the media and government have whipped up a frenzy where the electorate are now arguing amongst themselves. Perhaps it’s a handy distraction from the bigger problems. In reality, changed to Motability won’t scratch the surface of the deficit.

The entire tax and benefits system doesn’t work. The whole thing needs looking at. Year after year, governments tinker around the edges. It doesn’t achieve enough. The entire system needs reform and simplification.

Overthebow · 25/11/2025 09:35

Yes I agree. The scheme is needed but no way should Mercedes and BMWs have been included in it.

Why not?

Nearly50omg · 25/11/2025 12:09

AutumnLeavesandKnittedJumpers · 25/11/2025 09:44

But still subsidised!

Why shouldn’t disabled people have anything nice?????? Why should they have the cheapest and shittest thing possible?? They are paying for it after all?!?!

phantomofthepopera · 25/11/2025 12:10

Allthecoloursoftherainbow4 · 25/11/2025 11:58

Why? They are already entitled to PIP / mobility and various other benefits? Why is a tax break also needed?

The money has to come from somewhere, tax breaks arent free? They cost the government (and all of us, effectively) that lost tax revenue?

Edited

Because being disabled is bloody expensive. But we can easily fund 25% pension relief, or entrepreneurs relief (just two examples)? Usually on sums many times greater than the cost of a car.

If we’re going to create a list of ‘worthy’ recipients of tax breaks, putting disabled people at the bottom of that list leaves a vile taste.

Again it can be used as a family car they EXPECT you to use it as a family car.

Snowonground · 25/11/2025 12:11

If you can afford an uplift for a luxury car you shouldn't be claiming for any of the car on the State. Pay for it yourself.

Official DWP statistics for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) – the primary qualifying benefit for the scheme – show a 0% fraud rate and a total overpayment rate (including claimant and official error) of just 0.4% in the year ending April 2024.

Please stop lying.

Totally agree. And all the whinging about £77 a week and how it’s not fair etc etc. When motability itself has been under scrutiny a fair few times in the last decade or so and clearly needs looking at again with apparent overcharging and huge bonuses for directors etc. yet here everyone is in a race to the bottom.

but the “weekly leasing charge” is £77 a week, or £240 a month. Leasing a Merc or other luxury car would cost a lot more than that. My mum’s Yaris is £500 a month for crying out loud

Well your mum is being scammed. My DD pays £600 a month for an Audi 7 Quattro and I pay £250 for a VW taigo.

Sadly people often choose the weakest to target

People who need WAVs have to pay a minimum of £4,000 to lease a WAV via motability. So do you think people needing a WAV should close their PIP claim?

If they are paying for it themselves then the Government has no control over how they spend their money
If they aren’t then it seems they do or we wouldn’t be seeing this headliner

If you haven't got a clue, why bother commenting?

tartanhaggis7 · 25/11/2025 12:15

i agree with most of the comments!! i can remember when diabled people drove about in greenish 3 wheelers ( like del boy) i think they were called a reliant robin praticle / low consumption / easy to park but on neg side u were a moving advert that u were disabled ! i don't know if any money is involved but they should be given an ford focus basic model if they want to upgrade then they pay SIMPLES😎😎😎

It should be means tested. You shouldn't get special treatment if you can support yourself and have the money to a extra for a luxury car. Bizarre this is even being discussed.
