Typing on my phone so not sure I can do a poll? But, if the government raises income tax or NI at the budget, will you think:

A - let’s get real, they had no other choice
B - those duplicitous / inept bastards

A.

if we want better services we need to pay for them.

After 14years of them being run into the ground they are more expensive to reinstate.

How much more are you happy to pay?

Who are the 'we" you are talking about?

They should be cutting welfare and restricting Motability cars before more bloody tax raises

B with massive bells on.

This.. they should be making massive cuts!

What about the elephant in the room?

The cost of a growing public sector, full of waste and an unstainable benefits bill.

People are being screwed to pay for inefficiency, the work shy and those with a dubious moral compass.

We all need to do our bit... apart from the inefficient and the unproductive it seems.

PinkFruitbat · 08/11/2025 18:35

100% benefits are completely out of control. But let’s start with the NHS; it’s an incinerator for our money. Completely out of control, badly managed, hugely wasteful.

end free prescriptions
£50 to see a GP (no exceptions)
£250 to see an A&E doctor (no exceptions)
no ID no care
patient feedback driven rewards

So we end up with a bunch of people with severe conditions presenting to the NHS that could have been dealt with cheaply if seen at an earlier stage?

The cost is outweighed by stopping all the time wasters.

Only because excess deaths would be through the ceiling. Unbelievable how many people want a return to the 1930s.

GlobeTrotter2000 · 08/11/2025 20:00

In the Netherlands there is no NHS like in the UK, but a mandatory insurance system with an excess of €385 to discourage time wasters.

I don’t remember any of the locals complaining about it in the years I have worked there.

Justnevergetsthere · 08/11/2025 20:01

A - I expected to pay more in income tax. But I absolutely expect services to improve if we do. I hope that we're not just throwing good money after bad.

Nothing will improve - they’re spending it on welfare including removing the 2 child benefit cap so they’re increasing the welfare bill. Don’t kid yourself it will mean a functioning health service and streets that are safe.

So you want to make seeing an NHS GP more expensive than a private GP?

But they aren’t being seen at earlier stages because so much resource guarding is required that truly sick people arent able to access medical care in a timely way.

People are dying because of delays in treatment. Cancer survival rates significantly lower in the UK.

excess deaths are already through the ceiling - time to try something new,

LaserPumpkin · 08/11/2025 20:08

£50 is pretty much the bottom for a private gp, but even £20 would massively reduce the number of time wasters.

Bluemin · 09/11/2025 00:39

Didn't they promise that their manifesto was fully costed?

Labour is too obsessed with class warfare to be able to make sensible economic decisions. Are state schools magically better now that there is VAT on private schools? No. And theyre not even spending the "extra money" if it exists on schools but on building on green belt land. They have penalised businesses which means that companies have less money for pay rises/recruitment and small businesses that create competition go bust.

Bluemin · 09/11/2025 00:44

Anyone following the Sandie Peggie or the Darlington nurses tribunals will have seen how easily the NHS wastes taxpayers money. Letting 2 men into women's changing rooms has cost these two NHS trusts hundreds of thousands in legal fees already due to them contesting the nurses' claims, and likely much much more if the courts rule against them, which is highly likely. It has been eye-opening to see multi levels of management take zero responsibility for anything and the ridiculous level of incompetence and inefficiency of these managers who are earning £100k to £400k each.

MaturingCheeseball · 09/11/2025 08:21

Some of the salaries are obscene. In the above case the 28-year-old HR person was earning more than a senior nurse.

I’ve posted before that I saw a job advert for a Diversity Officer in Birmingham Health Trust for £86k. This was after I had heard the chief executive of said trust on Radio 4 saying they were having to cut cancer services due to financial constraints. I wish I knew who to complain to because my blood pressure was 200/200 when I saw that job.
