Why have the British lost confidence in their nation to the extent that Remainers wish to join a European Union instead of being confident in independence?

The powerful Victorians would never have tolerated this! Why can’t Brits be like Victorians?

Guess what - its not the 1800s. We have anitbiotics, vaccines and education for the common oicks. Its no longer legal and socially acceptable for men to beat their spouses to death and 50% of women don’t die directly or indirectly from childbirth. Most children live to see their first birthday.

Try reading actual history instead of the Ladybird Book of Great Victorians printed in 1955.

<checks clock>. oh yes, traditional chucking out time in ye olde Britain.

I’m really disappointed, you put two sentences in your post when I just thought it would be a single ‘x’

Melbourne’s a nice enough city but I’m not sure what else there is in Victoria to aspire to, particularly.

I suppose I could get behind importing a penguin for everyone.

The Victorians would never have tolerated any nonsense from any European country or the USA or China or Russia and would’ve used extreme force and power to deal with them all. Yet modern Brits want to act more meek.

Edited

We no longer have the power to act like America, Russia or China does or to overrule them.

Alright Nige? Tommy out tonight leaving you lonely with your rage? Chill mate.

It’s not about losing confidence in the nation, it’s about being fiscally smart, Brexit is a financial disaster.

EmShire · 17/10/2025 23:38

Because we're not living in the 19th century?

Blarghism · 18/10/2025 00:34

We no longer have all the (stolen) wealth and power of the empire and child labour is frowned upon so we'll just have to live in these times and accept that we've royally fucked over our own country!

MirandaBlu · 18/10/2025 00:40

I wanted to rejoin the second remaining became impossible. Wanting to remain and wanting to rejoin are both signs of my confidence in the UK (or in its constituent countries, if a breakup is the best route to rejoining); I wouldn't want to join the EU if the UK's membership would be a liability.

mathanxiety · 18/10/2025 04:59

Hi Jacob Rees-Mogg! Mumsnet is the last place I expected to find you.

Maybe Britain shouldn’t have allowed the rest of the world to steal and copy it industrial revolution then it would still have such a technological advantage over the rest of the world.

ive never read such shite in my life

MrsKeats · 18/10/2025 22:19

Surely a joke post.

Why shouldn't we want to join the biggest trading block on the planet....that should be the question....

Crikeyalmighty · 18/10/2025 22:45

Not sure what you are blabbering in about OP - we are not victorians, we don’t have empires, we are not all powerful, we don’t have much ‘clout’ - so what the victorians would do is irrelevant

ninjahamster · 18/10/2025 22:50

I voted to remain. If we could rejoin, I’d agree to it in a heartbeat. Sadly we are heading in the other direction with Farage likely to eliminate many of the sensible laws we have.
Safety in numbers.

AlohaRose · 19/10/2025 12:54

Oh, it’s you again under another name change. Do I take it you didn’t take up that university offer then?

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/10/2025 13:53

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 17/10/2025 22:34

I always assumed that the Remainers were people who might not feel completely connected to the country. Like perhaps they have family abroad, travelled extensively, heritage elsewhere. That kind of thing.

You assumed wrongly in our case.

Oh is this the poster who is constantly raving about Cambridge?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 19/10/2025 15:53

I wan’tt trying to make an argument, thick or thin. I just assumed Remainers were more cosmopolitan, travelled regularly or had links aboard through family or work.

But why would you assume you needed to be cosmopolitan or well-travelled in order to recognise the benefits of a larger ‘home’ market, a collective voice on a global stage etc?

childofthe607080s · 19/10/2025 18:25

I think it’s easier for people to understand the benefits of working with other counties and cultures if you have traveled - not essential but certainly more likely

the east and west coast of the US have a very different culture to the central bits and it is believed that is directly related to the number of passports held in those areas

Crikeyalmighty · 19/10/2025 20:35

@EvangelicalAboutButteredToast what does that have to do with feeling connected? I’m pretty patriotic but I’ve also got a good business head and a business and I’m British born and bred and white as driven snow. I can see when making the country400 billion down for little fiscal gain is a pointless exercise in dogma and designed to appeal to those with little commercial reality !!

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 19/10/2025 20:44

Why are you mentioning your skin colour?

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/10/2025 22:24

You mentioned “heritage elsewhere” in an earlier post. I think your meaning was clear to most people.

Notagain75 · 19/10/2025 22:27

What a very strange OP.
We are not living in Victorian times. We don't (thankfully) have a massive Empire. We are not the largest industrial nation.
We are a very small Island.
