Why have the British lost confidence in their nation to the extent that Remainers wish to join a European Union instead of being confident in independence?

The powerful Victorians would never have tolerated this! Why can’t Brits be like Victorians?

The OP joined Mumsnet two days ago, it seems with the sole aim of trying to make people angry. I wouldn’t engage.

Happyher · 17/10/2025 20:13

WW2 happened and European countries wanted peace and prosperity so over the years developed in to what we have now. Then in this country Farage sold us a pup that too many people doted on and we found ourselves in the position we are now with a small army, poor trade opportunities in a tumultuous world. We probably couldn’t succeed in invading the Isle of Man never mind a huge bloc of countries. What planet are you on!

BIWI · 17/10/2025 20:19

Ah, yes. Another Brexiteer who wants us to go back to the days of the Empire.

Stupid and ignorant as well as goady as fuck.

(Same for all your other threads @Libra1509)

MagicLoop · 17/10/2025 20:19

Even children understand that being part of a collaborative group can be beneficial for all (not just the weak), OP. It seems you don't, though.

AgnesX · 17/10/2025 20:20

😁 The Victorians were a century ago. Two world wars and umpteen conflicts later it's a different world and it sounds like you want to turn the clock back.

Would you like to go back to women not having the vote, even more poverty than there is now, high child mortality and dangerous factories.

Wanting to be part of the EU is the same as it was in the 70s ie for economic reasons.

Catpiece · 17/10/2025 20:21

The Remainers always wanted to be in the EU

Some of the Leave voters did as well.🙈

Do bots ever sniff glue? It's the only explanation for this thread that I can think of.

During the Victorian era, the British Empire was built on the backs of exploitation and slavery in all but name

Victorians sent children up chimneys and down mines, people starved and were expected to work for pittance and that was just the people at home

We can't go back to gun boat politics, goin dahn't pit and expecting the world to bow to a corrupt government and monarchy

Mewling · 17/10/2025 20:48

Yes, bring back the Victorian period! The children yearn for the mines.

BIWI · 17/10/2025 20:53

Bring back the workhouse, I say. Send the children up chimneys and down mines and remove all voting rights from women.

What’s not to love?

And quite a lot of men.

Your illiteracy says it all really!

Echobelly · 17/10/2025 21:07

It's nothing to do with 'confidence in the nation' - it's because we are not in Victorian times and the world now is about cooperation and trade; not 'being the biggest and toughest who don't need nobody'. So much failed politics comes from people trying to go back to ideas of the past when the current context is utterly different, so just going back to something that 'worked' (NB, it probably didn't actually work for most people) 100 or 50 or even 30 years ago isn't going be effective.

KeepTalkingBeth · 17/10/2025 21:11

Hilarious OP

Friday bridge dwellers tend to score 2 out of 10 for effort, this is a 4 maybe? The Brexit trope is tired but the Victorian thing is different, it did make me giggle

Are you being serious? Because it’s no longer the Victorian era, we don’t have an empire to suppress the world and fuel our wealth, we are no longer a superpower, no manufacturing to speak of and no longer one of the most clever, innovative and ambitious countries in the world.

By leaving the EU we have voluntarily isolated ourselves and given up a massive slice of our soft power- history will judge us and you can’t counteract it by harking back to a long dead age that was actually pretty shit for last ordinary people.

I honestly despair

Gingerwarthog · 17/10/2025 21:20

We don’t have an Empire anymore. The Empire (especially India) generated huge wealth and therefore power.

ButterPiesAreGreat · 17/10/2025 21:24

Most Remainers wanted to remain as they clearly understood the benefits of doing so and didn’t fall for any bullshit written on the side of a bus.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 17/10/2025 22:34

I always assumed that the Remainers were people who might not feel completely connected to the country. Like perhaps they have family abroad, travelled extensively, heritage elsewhere. That kind of thing.

Howldens · 17/10/2025 22:35

Libra1509 · 17/10/2025 11:20

The Victorians would never have tolerated any nonsense from any European country or the USA or China or Russia and would’ve used extreme force and power to deal with them all. Yet modern Brits want to act more meek.

No I just really, really liked the enormous economic and cultural benefits of having close ties with countries on the continent. I feel entirely connected to my place of birth in the UK. Your argument seems a bit thin.
