“Tax the wealthy” (RR budget) what does this even mean?

gggddjkki · 16/10/2025 08:32

I don’t remember anxiously waiting for budgets like we have the last few years earlier on in my adulthood. But when you read statements like this (as I have seen in the headlines today) what do you interpret it to mean? What does taxing the wealthy look like to you? Taxing higher earners more? From what point? Higher taxes on industry?

Yes this level of lying, followed by the first budget which had a £70bn borrowing and tax hike.

And whatever next because that budget hammered growth.

I suspect it is more incompetence than outright lying. Reeves seems to believe the shit that comes out of her mouth.

Daisymay8 · 18/10/2025 06:42

what they should do is reexamine everyone on benefits to see if their circumstances have changed.
Start checking or prosecuting people taking cash in hand for non payment of taxes.
This will cost a lot and take a lot of time but if you think the gov might catch you out not paying tax or if you think you are about to be found out lying to gain benefits and ordered to pay them back then i think many people would stop doing it.
The point is whilst everyone gets away with it everyone does it - people will get nervous if they think they might not actually be entitled to it and choose themselves to come of it.
Like if you take the boat people to Rwanda the others stop coming.
I don't think you can tax houses over 500K as that is half of the SE. A lot of former council houses will be worth that - so they won't do that.

There was a thread recently where people were describing their experiences with getting help for SEND and how difficult it is.

Does anyone want to go on that thread and tell those people their kids shouldn't have help because it's too expensive?

There aren't millions of "scroungers" around whose benefits can be painlessly cut no matter what the Daily Mail tells you. We had fourteen years of Tory government trying to cut benefits - why couldn't they manage it if it was so easy?

Whilst there are details on TikTok on how to game the system I don't think you can say everyone is deserving.

Do the first five years in coalition with the LibDems count?

What huge hikes? We don’t know what’s planned.

An application of logic might help.

We know the size of the alleged deficit - the fiscal black hole, if you prefer.
We know what Reeves did last October.
We know the messaging coming out of this government, about ‘a changing world’ etc.
We know that they have been unable to get a paltry GBP 5 bn in welfare cuts past the backbenches.

So, whilst we don’t yet know the detail, we know the macro.

Here’s another reminder of Reeves’ pre-election lies:

Labour's manifesto is, "fully funded and fully costed - no ifs, no ands, no buts… no additional tax rises."

"I have been very clear that every policy we announce, and every line in our manifesto, will be fully costed and fully funded."

“Nothing in our plans requires any additional tax to be increased.”

“We’ve got the Office for Budget Responsibility now… You don’t need to win an election to find out [about the public finances].”

“I don’t believe that fiddling around with tax rates is the best way to grow the economy.”

Yes, Reeves is a bare-faced liar - it is on record.

She is self-pitying, too - with the crocodile tears.

A Chancellor in name only.

It’s very interesting that when people slate the Tories for 14 years of mismanagement (such an overused phrase), they always remember to include Brexit and Liz Truss in their list of things we must never forget they got wrong but simultaneously omit the fact that the first five years were in a Coalition government- so do the LibDems bear any responsibility or do we need to revise the figure down to 9 years of mismanagement?

They also forget to mention Covid which cost about half a trillion and the Ukraine war which tipped us all over the edge.

I would love to see how Reeves and Starmer would have managed the last two.

P.S. Absolutely no fan of the Tories who shafted me with some of their more socialist policies.

Yes no large economic shocks and Reeves and wibbling on about ‘the world’. Two major economic shocks in comparison previously.

Incompetence and lies from Labour.

The LibDems supported the cuts.

Those who argued that austerity would cost money in the long run have been proved right.

Obviously the ones whose parents scam the system

Daisymay8 · 18/10/2025 07:36

Basically they can't do anything to cut welfare as their fellow MPs won't support it so we continue this disastrous fall into more and more debt.
They need to do big changes but probably won't as they want to stay in power but as no changes means everyone gets poorer they won't stay in power either.

Plus the £70bn from last time. That and whatever they go for again is huge snd nowhere near those manifesto pledges below.

I tend to think how much worse it would have been without the LibDems there trying to provide some sort of moderating influence. If you look at the list of ministerial roles any of them held, you can clearly see how little they actually had control over. And as the coalition ended 10 years ago, no I don't see them as having any accountability for the current shit show in this country.

Yes, and the inevitable tax raid in November’s budget will be repeated every year.

Like junkies, this lot will be looking for their next fix, with a new set of excuses as to why they are unable to go cold turkey.

The Starmer fan club will not be so supportive once they begin to feel the impact.

smilingfanatic · 18/10/2025 07:56

Is team RR leaking snippets to the press or are they pulling this stuff out of their arses? This pisses me off more than anything, the uncertainty and worry this all causes and its ripple effects through the economy.

I now feel labour need to be out, but who are the viable alternative? The Tories were absolutely shambolic and they brought us Brexit - can they be trusted? Can the Lib Dems run the country? They would at least aim to get us back into the EU trading block but what about the rest of it.... Obviously for many reasons Reform would be dreadful and I would seriously worry for everyone.

If there was a GE tomorrow, who would you vote for and why?

TeenagersAngst · 16/10/2025 11:28

I’ve read stuff on this that suggests if you did this for everyone including the wealthy, it would raise far more than the current system does because it would limit people trying to avoid IHT with elaborate wealth planning schemes.

But as with my earlier post about corporation tax, Labour would rather chew off their own feet than reduce tax rates, even if it did raise more money for the exchequer. They are morons.

Reform, without question - and I would be pinching my nose with a number of their stated policies.

Why? The Tories would be a wasted vote atm IMHO.

ABL = Anyone But Labour.

Labour have barely been in power. I’m really disliking people who keep saying this. How long were the conservatives in power again?!

But then they came into power and found an undeclared gaping hole in the budget because the Tories lied, do you not remember that?

That gaping hole was extremely convenient - and a lot of that hole was actually created by Labour winning the election (forecasts worse than if tories had stayed in power- which could have been a short term thing if they had addressed it differently)

the problem with the last budget was that it did nothing to restore confidence which was needed to shrink the hole

Greylakemirage · 18/10/2025 08:49

All the reveal stories in the press are seriously hitting the economy and installing fear to so many. Delaying the Budget until 26 November just makes it even worse. Why?

CGT on mid level main residences would be insane. It would stop people from moving BUT if there was also a property tax so many would not be able to afford to live in their homes. Then what? families clammering to move to cheaper flats or tiny homes. Thus pushing up the price of those properties. FTB priced out. Scores of mid level properties empty. Increase in homelessness. Even more people turning to welfare at a time when it needs to be seriously reduced. A mess.

Stamp duty needs to be cut to stimulate the market and council tax needs to be reviewed. It is crazy that expensive properties in London less than a terrace house in the North. Also why are new build council tax bands so much higher than the equivalent tax band of an old property?

A poll tax would be so much fairer and easier and cheaper to implement (thus increasing revenue). The original proposal received so much hate but now surely it seems the logical next step. Afterall, people not properties use Council services.

Alternately, whilst they are hesitant to cut benefits why not reduce the benefit freebies? I.e removing free council tax, boilers, home repairs etc easy and cheap to implement and they are not touching the cash element of benefits paid.
