Who would you vote for in a general election tomorrow?

If the next GE was tomorrow, who would you vote for? I've been unimpressed at decisions made by Labour since they came in and just don't have much faith in their long term plans. I've never even considered voting Tory, but also don't really see Labour doing much more to improve things for anyone. Will be interesting to see how things are in a few years time when the next GE comes round. Am I missing some really good stuff Labour are implementing?

Labour. I’m in Scotland.

ditto

Labour....struggle to see how anyone could vote Reform!?

AntiHop · 07/08/2025 00:05

StarDolphins · 06/08/2025 18:11

Reform. Just to ensure Labour are turfed out. I don’t think voting any other will do that.

Labour will have made such a shitty messy by the time the next GE is here. Loads of debt, immigrants and failed businesses imo.

They've only had a year. It's going to tsjd a while to sort out the mess the tories made.

So everyone keeps going on about 'the mess the tories made'. Could you be a bit more specific about what exactly you think is a mess, and what Labour are doing to fix it?

I genuinely can't see it.

The main mess I think the Tories made is allowing immigration to rise so steeply. That really is a mess, but happened very quickly and I think took the Conservatives by surprise (just as the huge influx in 2004 after we opened our borders to the EU took Blair by surprise). Sunak made changes in his 18 months in power which did bring legal immigration down a bit, but Starmer has done nothing effective since so it's rising again. Labour also cancelled Rwanda, which might have been our best chance to slow illegal immigration, which is increasing. Labour are not responding to the social impacts of the fast-growing male asylum hostels - usual Labour denial and gaslighting.

Brexit? That was a referendum, and the choice of the population, not the Tories. When I see the current unrest about immigration - with the political class again not listening to the lived consequences on the working class - I see now that the Brexit referendum did need to happen, even though I didn't like the result. A middle class, urban elite can't impose their ideological views on the rest of the country. Cameron was PM and campaigned hard against Brexit. What did Corbyn (who was Labour leader at the time) do? He refused to even say what he thought, let alone campaign! He could have made a difference. Brexit is at least as much on Labour as Conservatives - but was perhaps inevitable.

Funding for public services? Still went up throughout the Conservatives time, just not as much as the Left want. For me, the mess the Tories made is that public spendingc didn’t go down as a % of GDP. But even for those who think state services need funding to increase at ever-faster rates, Labour are making things worse. Doctors are striking again. Schools have had to absorb unfunded teacher pay rises, NI and NMW rises under Labour. A bowl of cornflakes isn't what the education sector needs.

The economy? Under Sunak, it was starting to pick up after the huge global challenges of Covid and the Ukraine war. Labour stamped all over those green shoots though, with the NI increase, more spending, and an inability to get the slightest Welfare cuts through. Reeves caused a not dissimilar drop in the bond market to Truss, and employment for young people is through the floor.

"Sorting out the Tory mess" is just a Labour soundbite. Do please tell me what they've actually done. I've seen their paper, so please don't just link that: there's nothing in there but empty grandstanding about what they've 'committed'. I want to know what they've actually achieved. Even just green shoots and good starts would do. But there's nothing.

Yes it has only been a year but after feeeling optimistic initially at a new government and the change they promised, I just feel hopeless with them. It’s chaos and absolutely nothing is going in the right direction for me, I think the next 4 years will get worse year on year. In a year, there should’ve been some clear and big improvements.

I also can’t stand my MP, anyone that asks him difficult questions on either grooming gangs or war, he blocks them. Locals all saying they don’t get replies from emails from 8 months ago.

Katie717 · 07/08/2025 07:13

I’d vote for whoever was best placed to beat Labour in the particular constituency I lived in.

It’s pretty much a moot point for me though as I live in a constituency where Labour has almost no support and would never win the seat. I don’t know a single person locally who has ever voted for them.

He's backtracked on that comment. Even though it was one of the only sensible things he's said.

How sad you actually think this. It's not where I live. I often wonder if the people that think this are lonely or not friendly with their neighbours?
Our street in Manchester is really friendly and hugely diverse.m in every sense. We have about 10 religions represented and loads of people from different heritage. Makes for great food at our street parties.

I would reluctantly vote for Labour as though I haven't been impressed with them I like our MP.

FlyRedRobin · 07/08/2025 07:16

Shocked at the number of people who are still voting for Labour. It would be more interesting or the socio economic background is revealed.
I always get the sense working class who despise successful people vote for Labour no matter what.

I'd rather see Reform win than Labour even though I can't stand Reform either.

Labour destroyed everything I was aspiring to. I retired earlier than planned precisely because of Labour policies, because it doesn't make any sense for me to make an effort anymore.

Still, this thread is scary.

Those of you who are going to vote Reform - what exactly you expect them to do?

Could you explain what they destroyed that affected your plans please? I'm thinking about retirement in a few years.

Why? Farage only cares about power and wealth. He will wreck the country just as Brexit has started to.

AgnesX · 07/08/2025 07:28

It has to be Labour. Can't risk that bunch of fascists aka Reform getting in.

It's between the devil and a hard place.

I know. My preference would be conservatives but they haven't got their act together. I'm an immigrant too so I really don't want to see Reform win, but I can't stomach Labour, the incompetent of every single front benches and how much they've lied through their teeth, and the two tier justice.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 28/06/2025 19:13

Is there seriously a difference between Labour and the Tories?

The, 'island of strangers,' is still echoing as one of the worst things ever said by a Labour politician.

Why

But how do you think letting in Reform is going to help? They don't wvene have enough experienced MPs to fill the top jobs let alone a cabinet. It's going to be frightening.

I'm hoping it will be a coalition with the Conservatives.

I think they will beat the tories in most tory areas.

On top of the normalising of racism. They will wreck the economy (unless you are rich) and get rid of the NHS.

It's going to be awful.

RowsOfFlowers · 07/08/2025 07:53

Why does everyone dislike Labour so much? They’ve barely had a chance tbf.

I think that would be the best outcome. It would marginalise Labour significantly and make them largely irrelevant.

There is also the possibility the coalition could at some point become a uni party in which case that’s Labour finished for at the least the next generation or until there are enough new naive voters who don’t have first hand experience of the destruction Labour always cause.

At the rate they’re going there won’t be any Conservatives in 2029.

CurlewKate · 07/08/2025 08:28

I would vote for the party that is nearest to my beliefs and values. Which is Labour. It’s like taking a bus. You don’t expect it to go directly to your front door-so you get the one that goes nearest.

Mn still seems to have people liking them, loyalty is there. But they’ve lost a lot of support.

Not sure it’s working class anymore. Public sector maybe.

Yes-absolutely not working class any more. Never has been, actually-that’s a very simplistic view. There have always been loads of working class Tories. The tragedy now is that the elite and privileged people at the head of Reform have somehow managed to position themselves as the champions of the working class.

RowsOfFlowers · 07/08/2025 07:53

Even within the first month we found out starmer, rayner have been enjoying Lord Ali's gifts. I work in private company and we can't accept gifts, they are acting like elites. Then starmer and his two tier justice. I'm no British and of course I'm against racism, but even I can understand people's anger on how he handled immigration. And Reeves, what an absolute bag of fart. She's so incompetent it's painful. But they keep gaslighting people saying that everything is on track while the cost of living and inflation are worse than before. And that twat on question time who said majority of boat refugees are women and children. Blatant lies. Need I go on?

At this point people only vote for Labour due to identity politics. But Labour today is not Labour in the past.
