Lifetime Social Housing Tenancies

Am I wrong or being unreasonable to think that this new policy that Labour are bringing in is very unfair?

I come from a poor-ish background (as in no one in my wider family has any money). However, my mum and Dad did fairly okay and managed to move up the property ladder (through sheer hard work and sacrifice). My dad died a few years ago and so now it’s just my mom. We never received any benefits - and now my DH and I live in a house and pay a high interest rate (thanks Truss) and I don’t know if we will ever pay off our house (if I am to have children and go part time), so we will need to downsize. We don’t qualify for any benefits either but we are in the squashed middle, so we really feel it when anything rises in cost and don’t get any help.

I feel really cross that someone can benefit from social housing for a lifetime, no matter how much they go on to earn, and then if they pass away, they can pass it down as an asset.

I have a friend who’s parents came to this country, got given social housing, their children paid it off (40% discount) and now they all get to keep a £650k house in London. It doesn’t seem fair to me at all. I feel really disillusioned living in the UK.

So do you want working people living in SH or just those on benefits? It's difficult to tell.

I would like to see housing allocated based on need. If your a single person you have a small house, if your family you'd have the right number of bedrooms. If don't need social support you can rent/buy privately. At the moment families end up in hotel accommodation whilst weathly empty nesters live in large council houses. It is ridiculous. No one needs a 4 bedroom house for longer than say 25 years until their children have moved on. but it could be allocated to someone in their 30s for life. Social housing should be allocated based on current need rather than past need.

It's social housing. Provided by the state. If you won't want people to have an opinion buy your own house. We can all have an opinion on how public assets should be used.

😂 I'm splitting my sides here. As @K0OLA1D said, the private financial affairs of people in social housing are NOTHING to do with you. I bet you think it's FREE too. You do know the majority of people in social housing pay rent right? What am I saying, of course you don't know that! Your posts are full of horrific innaccuracies.

I'm cringing for you. 😬 OMG. 😆 As a pp said, should everyone know all about everyone else's GP appointments, dental appointments, and hospital specialist appointments too, and what they are all for, to make sure they are 'allowed' by the Uber-Judgemental? What about children, shall we all judge anyone who has more than 2, because all that taxpayers money is supporting them through school. Oh NO! Shock

Loads of people move house when they get pay increases. It is pretty common for people to move house. Some people just live in a different world of being nannied by the state their whole lives.

LOL, no they don't. Most people who have a pay increase just stay in the same property. If every time people got a pay increase, they moved house, no-one would ever stay in the same place for more than a year! 😆 And millions of people live in affordable, secure, social housing, (In fact social housing has been around for nearly 140 years.) People are not being 'nannied' because they have secure affordable housing, THAT THEY PAY RENT FOR. 😂

Tell me you are bitter and angry, and jealous of people in social housing, without telling me you are bitter and angry, and jealous of people in social housing.

The bile is dripping from your posts @Lioncub2020 . 😬

No one I'm feeling.

Everyone should just cut some branches off their magic money trees and buy their own

Given you don't think anyone should have any opinions on anyone else - why post at all?

In classic mumsnet fashion. I think you need to educate yourself - if you think the current system works just look around. You've also pulled the jealous card - go you.

Ratisshortforratthew · 26/06/2025 19:07

If you own a house in the SE, one of the most expensive areas in the country, the you’re privileged. I am too as a London homeowner. I don’t find it difficult or upsetting to own that. Rather than wish away one of the last secure housing frameworks we have, I’d rather we forced correction of the housing market so anyone who wanted to buy a home could. House price caps, banning second home ownership, laws against properties being unoccupied for long amounts of time. Something tells me OP wouldn’t like that either

The reason the current system is broken is because the idiots in charge sold off the HA stock. That is why there are waiting lists miles long. We need more social housing. It should be there for anyone who requires it for as long as they require it. Very few people who have the means to actually buy their own home will stay in social housing. Me being a perfect example of that.

Its certainly not the pp who needs to educate themselves.

We can have different opinions without being trolls. You're the one arguing that housing shouldn't be allocated based on need.

It is originally based on need though. What I am saying is that theu shouldn't then be kicked out to private rent because they have a pay increase etc.

Not everyone can buy and if you have a HA home then you have a secure home, for as long as you need it. Like I said before, not many people will remain in HA if they can afford to buy.

I am also not the one throwing pathetic insults at people.

You are so pissing ignorant its untrue.

Both me and dp worked. Full time. I am also disabled to boot. But I had 2 dc. I went back to work early both times as I earned more.

You can put your daily mail down at any time you know.

Oh and the personal circumstances of people in HA and council houses are sod all to do with you

I think saying someone is "pissing ignorant" @K0OLA1D is a pathetic insult, and undermines your argument, which isn't strong.

Well said. We all have a right to an opinion on what our taxes are spent on and the circumstances of the people who are benefitting from state support, even if some people don’t like that opinion.

100%.

There are some very angry and vitriolic posters on this thread. You aren’t adding any balanced or well-meaning contributions, you are simply stirring up hate and insults towards anyone that dares disagrees with you.

We are all entitled to our own opinions without the need to be personally attacked or insulted.

I would hazard a guess that you are not critical of a system because it has or is working for you.

The argument “we are all entitled to secure housing” is kind of falling on deaf ears as well because that doesn’t solve the issue for those in insecure private rentals, or those paying a mortgage. I wouldn’t say having a mortgage is safe or secure as it depends on my health and my ability to work / have employment. The same goes for my partner. Yes, we will have an asset at the end, but we’ve a hell of a lot of stress, and interest to pay off. All whilst paying taxes.

Social housing or HA IS subsidised. I am allowed to say that and highlight that without it meaning that I am somehow jealous or throwing hate towards SH or HA tenants. It is simply a fact.

To the PP who said because I am a homeowner in the SE makes me privileged. Not really, I don’t outright own my home. All my savings went into a deposit for this place. If I lived in the private rental sector, I’d be even worse off, and wouldn’t be able to save. Buying a house was my only option really and all my family and support network live in SE. Plus my partner’s job is extremely niche to London.
