Why Can't Britain Stand up for itself more?

Why can't modern British governments act more like Victorian British governments and not tolerate any nonsense from the rest of the world and secure Britain's interests always? For instance, in Victorian times, Britain did not tolerate any nonsense from Russia or Europe or China or the USA or India etc yet nowadays the British government is not so strong-hearted against them.

What would you like Britain to do?

TheHouseofGirth · 16/05/2025 00:12

Ha. Perhaps because it doesn't have colonies any more?
I am also agog to know what Britain should do.

UrbanMonstrosity · 16/05/2025 00:13

I know, right? All that conquering, violence and exploitation. Britain has lost its backbone

SwedishEdith · 16/05/2025 00:14

Have you been drinking?

Because during the Victorian period Britain was the preeminent power in the world. We were at the height of our status as one of the largest and most powerful empires history had ever known, and a nation driven by dynamism and innovation.

These days... yeah, not so much.

Tomatotater · 16/05/2025 05:45

Because in Victorian times, Britain spent a lot of time draining huge amounts of wealth from the Colonies, particularly India, which went from being one of the wealthiest countries in the region to one of the poorest after British rule. The main problem we have is harking back to the glory days of the past-Empire, WWII instead of living in the present, investing in the future and making decisions based on what we are instead of what we were in the 19th century.

materialgworl · 16/05/2025 05:47

dynamism and innovation? Britain? The colonial empire that rinsed resources from other territories for its own benefit? Pffft

Renabrook · 16/05/2025 06:01

Ok say Britain shuts out the rest of the world, where will everyone get their food from, the rubbish they buy from Shein, all the chemicals they use around the house and put on their bodies, all the holidays to Spain people will miss out, where will the cars, utilities, furniture, cheap lager, latest mobile & trainers & clothes sure people use vinted but where did it all come from originally? how much was hand made in Britain to start with?

think of eveything in your and everyone's life that would dissapear then come back and tell us your opinion then?

It is very easy so just blurt out a few lines but how much thought goes into the idea in the first place?

InWalksBarberalla · 16/05/2025 06:03

Sorry what is it you want British to do? What nonsense are other countries inflicting on the UK exactly?

Renabrook · 16/05/2025 06:09

thinking more do you mean wars, trade tariffs with the US what are they doing to Britian that you want Britain to stand up to them about? what actual examples?

@kmo0416

Ah yet another post where the OP puts up something provocative and then never returns to the post.
