What if Jeremy corbyn had won the 2019 election
What if we had voted to remain in the referendum
Would Liz truss become a good Pm if she had been given longer

I think we can all answer about Liz Truss. John Smith.

idolikealiein · 27/04/2025 18:16

What if David Milliband had won the Labour leadership rather than Ed Milliband?

Zonder · 27/04/2025 19:56

Oh yes John Smith. That would have played out differently I'm sure.

MsAmerica · 28/04/2025 03:55

Meh. The best what-if situations are older, at least a half-century. Like, what if Catherine of Aragon had had a few sons? What if Prince Albert had recovered? What if Wallis Simpson had gone back to America instead of to England?
Right now, the single biggest what-if would be: What if Trump had never made it to the primary elections, as no one thought he would? Jeb Bush might have been the likely Republican candidate, running, and losing, one hopes, against Hillary Clinton.
It's not just America. For one thing, if Hillary Clinton were president, I don't think Putin would be in Russia now.

What if Denis Healey had become Leader of the Labour Party inthe early 1980s instead of Michael Foot, and been Leader of the Opposition against Thatcher? Would the Tories have won every election until 1997?

Also, what if Labour had woken up to what a problem Militant Tendency was and rooted it out long before Neil Kinnock?

dubsie · 28/04/2025 07:17

Liz Truss was never going to be a good MP let alone PM.

Corbyn would have been good but only in the right time.

Reform are just trouble so no never.

John Smith definitely a good PM

Violetparis · 28/04/2025 07:21

What if MPs hadn't called for a second Brexit referendum and voted for some of the amendments to soften the exit ?

Violetparis · 28/04/2025 07:22

What if MPs had answered the what is a woman question correctly ?

Bromptotoo · 28/04/2025 07:49

If James Callaghan had called and won a General Election in 1978.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/04/2025 07:56

Yes, Brexit. What if Cameron had taken the referendum seriously and put the usual safeguards in place to say that the result would only be binding if something like 60% or two thirds voted Leave? Making it a simple majority was stupid. I have also not forgiven Corbyn for ignoring the fact that it was Labour Party policy to remain in the EU and just not bothering to campaign for Remain because it wasn't what he wanted. Thank god we never had to contend with him and John McDonnell running the country. It would have been an absolute nightmare, rivalling the various numpties the Tories put up.

That's an interesting one. I was too young to vote in 1978, but not by much, and I was paying some attention to current events. I don't have the impression that Labour could have won an outright majority in 1978. The unending strikes and high inflation of the 1970s were incredibly unpopular.

Dogalabasta · 28/04/2025 08:01

What if David Cameron had stayed after the Brexit vote.

And another for John Smith.

Jackrussellsaremad · 28/04/2025 17:38

What if Boris Johnson hadn't caught covid. Would he have levelled up the north. What if covid hadn't happened actually, as we will never actually know how Brexit would have gone.

What if Yeltsin hadn't been an alcoholic.

What if 9/11 had never happened.

coxesorangepippin · 28/04/2025 18:05

Diana married dodi and had a son

Camilla would've had Charles' child out of wedlock

Thatcher and Regan

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g I also remember the 1970s and 80s. Remember the Print Union that wanted a union member in each office to operate the photocopier because it was a printing job and needed an apprenticeship.
Serious discussions about shipping containers only being loaded by members of the Dockworkers union.

TheNightingalesStarling · 02/05/2025 06:40

What If we had known what was coming in 2019 when the Conservatives were reelected... would we have chosen Boris or Corbyn?

Zonder · 02/05/2025 07:47

What if ... What if the BBC and other media outlets didn't continuously give Farage and his crew the oxygen of publicity? What if they weren't such regulars on programmes such as QT, far more regular than their votes would suggest they should be?

Hear, hear!

The right wing media owned by billionaires is completely destroying this country. Of course they want rid of a Labour government in favour of a Trump style Reform who will kowtow to the super rich.

The media bias in favour of Reform is disgusting, but their propaganda is working🤬

Zonder · 02/05/2025 08:36

Absolutely. You would think they would benefit more from a thriving country.

Jackrussellsaremad · 02/05/2025 08:42

Labour are doing terribly in the polls because Labour are terrible. Which isn't the fault of the BBC 😆
