I know, but will this government be brave enough to get us out? Do you know of anyone in UK, a national from birth, whose case against someone even got as far as court?

I do believe that there are so many instances of human rights in this country which are ignored.

The human rights lawyers, and those of Liberty spend all their resources helping migrants get their feet in our door.

My goodness do I hope the UK doesnt leave the ECHR. Not that Labour would, and I'm not sure the Tories would either...but if Reform were to win...

Serpentstooth · 14/04/2025 06:41

Who wants Human Rights? Not us Brits apparently, what an original idea. Away with them. Bring on Trumpism, let's ban people and lock them up for no reason other than we don't like the look of them. "First, let's kill all the lawyers" W, Shakespeare.

The Tories would... and so would Labour if Reform continues to raise in the polls... Look no further than how Labour are now a party of Brexitiers to see how parties can change once cherished positions....

Given how China is behaving over British Steel, trying to deliberately shut down production here, so we are forced to buy chinese steel, we should be very very careful entering into closer trading links with China... we could of course 'forge' closer links with one of the worlds richest 'blocs...

If only there was such an organisation near by?

Trump's physical results are out. 6 foot 3, weight 224 lb, resting heart beat 62, 'scaring' on ear, and 'frequent victories in golf events '. Nobody seems to believe it, but they're treating it as hilarious, instead of alarming - which blatant lies should be.

He’s fully into despot territory, they’re not even worried about it being credible.

As for human rights, I don't think people want to give up their human rights, just take them away from others, like those 'migrants getting their feet in our door''

lawpluslaw · 14/04/2025 09:06

I just want to be clear that when I said one of the reasons we left the EU was to be rid of their pesky human rights court, I was being sarcastic. I don't want, even on an anonymous forum, to be associated with the viewpoint espoused by @llizzie

Nadia Eweida. UK national, born in Twickenham. Went to the ECHR in 2006 over her wish to wear a cross at work, and won.

Took 2 minutes to Google that one. You're welcome, now kindly accept you were wrong.

Donald Trump on Russia attacking Ukraine on Palm Sunday:

"I was told they made a mistake."

Notonthestairs · 14/04/2025 09:58

My first thought was Campbell and Cosans v The United Kingdom - a case regarding corporal punishment in schools. I am fairly sure the women bringing the case were British.

But I fail to see why we'd benefit from giving cause to terminate the existing EU-UK trade agreement - particularly given current circumstances - or risk the peace achieved through the Good Friday Agreement.

Why would no-one believe it? I guess the height is maybe exaggerated a little, but I'm quite surprised he didn't take the opportunity to downplay his weight problem.

Igotjelly · 14/04/2025 10:08

Today’s episode of American Friction is an interview with Noah Bullock, Exec Director of a human rights organisation that represents families of those forcibly disappeared across Central America. They talk at length about the agreement between Trump and El Salvador and about the autocratic playbook of creating an enemy to consolidate support around (as we’re seeing happen just now with gang members and criminals). Of course that’s ‘fine’ for their supporters until there’s no one left to scapegoat…

People assume he must be a lot heavier. He's clearly obese, but 16 stone at 6 foot 3 is not obese.

He did. 6'3" 224 pounds is unlikely to look like this.

And if his resting heart rate is 62 I'm Serena Williams.

I mean, 224lb is over 100kg isn't it? That's massively obese even at 6'3" unless you are a serious strength/power athlete. 64 resting HR seems reasonable for an unfit 79 year old. I would have blinked if he claimed it was in the 50s, but remember that resting HR declines with age regardless of fitness. Would be interesting to see what his HRmax was but I suspect a ramp test would kill him...

I’m fairly certain 60bpm is very low even for a 79 year old man, particularly for someone who acknowledges he’s overweight (and I suspect he’s shaved a few lbs off too).

TulipTiptoer · 14/04/2025 11:35

There's no way he is 6'3 at his age given we all shrink. I have, and I'm not as old as him.

I imagine he is possibly 6'1 now. He is quite obviously obese too as his BMI tells us.

Average rhr for a 78 year old is 74.2 (just looked it up). No way that MacDonald's scarfing tub of lard is at 62.

Edited

Unless he's under beta blockers for high blood pressure? I thought those lower heart rate.

It's exactly 16 stones. A quick Google shows 16 stone is overweight but not obese for 6 foot 3.

Again according to Google, a resting heart rate of 62 is 'great' for anyone over 65.

The main point here is that almost nobody believes these stats, and most are mocking Trump. The troubling thing is that nobody is surprised he'd lie so blatantly.

Apparently an RHR of 64 is in the middle of the 'good' range for 65+ year old men. To me it seems quite high, but apparently not.

SabrinaThwaite · 14/04/2025 11:44

If Trump is 6'3", then why is Prince William (who is 6'3") so much taller than him?

I'm thinking he's more like 6' and 270 lbs, which is definitely into the obese category.

Oh boy, I just googled pictures of them standing together - Prince William is half a head taller! Trump really is a lying sack of shit isn't he?
