Is America under Trump having its own Cultural Revolution moment?

I found this article very thought provoking. As we try to understand what is happening in the world and the seismic shifts in foreign and economic policy under Trump, is this what is really happening? More importantly, what does it mean for the rest of the world if this is a permanent change?

The president's war on Free Speech is well and truly underway.😟

I feel like reading FWR on Mumsnet has given me a really strong insight into where a lot of Trump voters come from. Loads of posters there are really pro Trump because he 'knows what a woman is' or something. They are single issue voters and like his stance on trans people and then kind of dismiss everything else as probably exaggerated, or overblown, or really due to the Democrats.

I think lots of Trump voters are like that. They pick their one single issue - trans rights, or abortion, or immigration- the thing that scares them- and vote for Trump because he's promised some series of extreme movement on that and then ignore everything else as not really their problem.

I do fear Trump but I also think some of the stuff he is doing is necessary and overdue. But….he does have anti democratic instincts and he is pretty much sticking to Project 2025, despite disavowing it while campaigning.

On the other hand, the total incomprehension from a certain type of Brit about why Trump was elected does amuse me. The problem is the status quo ante suited the wealthy down to the ground.

The liberal intelligentsia had become fat on a sea or rising asset prices caused by a combination of QE, Covid bailouts and our defence being basically paid for by the U.S. And most middle classes could work from home while cheap labour (lots of it low value immigrants) brought food and the latest tech to our door. The death of education and a decent medical system wasn’t a big deal as, at least in the S.E, there were good private alternatives.

On the other hand, in other communities (in both the U.S and the U.K) poverty increased immensely, there was little available medical treatment (and no available dental treatment) and the culture had become predominantly non-English speaking Moslem. And, of course, the ‘discrimination’ word was shouted every time anyone said all the above wasn’t a blessing (especially in leafy suburbs like Islington and Highgate, where diversity definitely is a blessing). Houses were no longer affordable and pension contributions bought less and less pension.

I had often wondered how the increasing inequality and woke double speak would end. And maybe Trump is the end point. Revolutions rarely install kind democratic governments, at least not for a few decades.

I'd say most Brits understand. It happen to us with Brexit and Johnson. But Trump is so much worse. He's happy to ride roughshod over everything unhindered by the Constitution, Checks and Balances or the law.

After the latest news re deporting Venezuelans to a third country, we can safely say that checks and balances have been tossed out the window by Trump's government. If the government is not law abiding, does this give a free pass for Americans to ignore the law too?

Unfortunately yes, it does.😟
