Just watching the news here and feelings are ranging from "meh" to despair. How the H-E Double Hockey Sticks did we get here?

Hopefully Trump supporters will wake up when they see the damage to their 401k’s. Trump supporters = idiots!

They won't.🤷‍♀️

They see Trump "owning"🙄 Carney /Canada /leftists /foreigners etc and that's enough for them.

Trump has done some good, it's easy to be negative about it but some of the regulations were holding America back have been removed and has given big business to the vigor to build.

Trump has changed his language on Russia, that's positive and I'm hoping Putin will wake up to the fact that he's losing....he can't win.

His plans for Gaza seem hideous but he's talking about giving the Palestinians a financial stake. If that's true and they get peace and a better quality of life it has to be better than living amongst rubble relying on charity and medical aid.....who knows it might work.

His trade wars are a distraction and I'm hoping he can put that to bed and focus on the job.

He's got five years to prove himself.....if it all turns to rats then he'll go down as a failure....if he succeeds...he will go down as one of the best.

My personal favourites were Obama and Reagan.... possibly Clinton, even Bush junior had his qualities especially when you consider the challenges he faced.

Parker231 · 11/07/2025 19:54

I struggle to think of anything positive he has done. DOGE’s website estimated $160 billion in savings, just 8% of its original goal. But that estimate may be inflated, given that DOGE’s reporting has been riddled with errors and misleading claims.

He’s inflamed the situation with Russia by switching from them being in favour to not being constantly. He needs to keep out of Gaza - Netanyahu is war criminal and Trump’s “plans” for Gaza are insane. He still plans on the Palestinians living in an open air prison.

He’s crashing the economy with his tariffs - he still doesn’t understand who pays for them. I’m waiting for us here in Canada to cut off the supply of potash and also electricity to the northern states !!!

There is so much wrong with this post. Where to begin?🤔

Trump has changed his language on Russia, that's positive and I'm hoping Putin will wake up to the fact that he's losing....he can't win.

I'll start with this bit. Trump changes his language as quickly as he changes his mood, his mind, his version of events and his underwear. Putin is well awake. He realised that it was cheaper and easier to buy the POTUS than it was to win against Ukraine.

Trump is Putin's Puppet. Putin put him in the Whitehouse and has not been disappointed.🤷‍♀️

BitOutOfPractice · 11/07/2025 21:40

And @dubsie the POTUS serves a 4 year term, not 5. He’s got 3.5 years left.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/07/2025 21:45

Even though Carney got rid of the Digital Tax, Canada still got this 35% bullshit. Elbows even further up.

Parker231 · 11/07/2025 22:01

Trump is denied opportunity to address Parliament on his upcoming visit to UK

Which means he won’t achieve something enjoyed by Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. He won’t like that!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 11/07/2025 22:08

Dropping our counter tarriffs is not the answer. Expanding trade in other markets is. And, as I've said before, stopping travel to the US.
Canadians can choose to travel many places other than the US. It's difficult, granted, I'm in fairly close proximity to the border, but convenience should not dictate. Elbows Up is already losing steam. I despair. 😔

We’re close to the border but no longer go over for lunches, shopping or holidays.

I rhink I remember you mentioning that. We used to drive to B'ham to go to Olive Garden and direct flights to Vegas that were quite reasonably priced. No more.

Was watching the news before bed last night on CTV and the had a story about duty free shops not have Canadian visitors and being in danger of closing.
Looks like they posted the story earlier in the week:

Trump announced a trade deal with Japan the other day. I'm curious what concessions Japan made and if it was a good deal for Japan.

I read an article about the billions Japan are apparently giving the US for investment. The article stated that Japanese officials said there is no written or binding agreement, and profits will be split based on risk and contribution.

The US car industry isn’t happy with the tariffs.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 25/07/2025 20:37

@Parker231 I just read a Reuters article.

Trump on August 1 tariffs: "We haven't had a lot of luck with Canada. I think Canada could be one where they just pay tariffs. It's not really a negotiation."

I wonder when someone is going to explain to him how tariffs work.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/07/2025 04:13

And the EU is done and dusted:

Bloomberg update

Only 1% of Japan’s $550B commitment to the U.S. is going to be real investment.

The other 99% of is going to be loans - at full market price interest rates

Another non deal? Surely each of the EU countries would have to ratify the deal?

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 31/07/2025 21:38

I noticed on the news about Trump and Canada this morning that Trump uses import taxes as a form of blackmail.

The breaking news on CTV is that tariffs are increasing to 35% starting on Friday.

The tariffs only cover goods that are not exempted by the U.S.-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, effectively leaving 85% of Canadian goods duty-free. So more political grandstanding from Trump - he’s probably change his mind tomorrow!

Off topic but FIFA may move the 2026 World Cup games from the US to Canada over immigration concerns!
