How does Kier Starmer do it?!

I am a similar age to him and am constantly knackered and am just utterly impressed by how the politicians such as Kier Starmer do it?!

Just looking at his last few days, on Weds/Thurs he flew to America and back for possibly one of the most important meetings there has been for the UK in a very long time. Then he flies back and meets Zelensky on Saturday which after what happened in the oval office was also an unbelievably diplomatically sensitive meeting. Then today he's just been on the Laura Kunsberg show and has left and is about to go and meet/host a meeting for European leaders!
He must be having to hold all sorts of other high level diplomatic discussions in between as well as keeping up to date on other briefings and then not to mention getting some sleep, if possible with all that going on and trying to see his family too. I have so much respect for it as it must be unbelievably stressful and tiring. I know your legacy would be part of history but they don't get paid that much, just wondering how on earth they do it!

They live for the thrill of being in the public eye and making big decisions. Also - all first class, the best of everything, and not a domestic worry to enter their heads. Lots of high powered lawyers/business people are the same. Nothing compared to 'our' lives at all.

Not a care in the world obviously. That’s why so many of them have panic rooms in their homes - just for shit and giggles. Remember Jo Cox.

I always wonder this too, I think about how little sleep they must get, how many phones they need to have ( I would lose them!), all the stuff you must have to remember about so many different things and how everyone you meet naturally feels that their issue is the most pressing. Then there must be that sinking feeling everytime Trump does or says something! I know that a PM does not have to cook, clean, plan meals, do the garden, maintain a house etc, but my head would be wrecked by the endless never ending crises and I would run off crying!

The amount of pure idiocy on this thread is astounding.

I always wonder things like that. No idea. Also the massive amounts of behind the scenes prep and reading to do. When do they sleep? get ill? Spend time with their kids?

I thought that as well about the awful footage of Zelensky being turned on by Trump and Vance in the Oval Office, disgusting bullying and completely undemocratic behaviour. How on earth Zelensky didn’t just burst into tears I have no idea. I would have.

Imagine having a war waged on you for three years and your people kids and families being killed, and then those two not letting you speak while they accuse you of inviting WW3?

I did shed a tear watching that, it was so shocking and disgusting. There have been some great memes of him smacking Trump in the face which was what the nasty orange bully deserved

Meanwhile, Trump and Vance are taking timeout golfing and skiing to recharge their batteries.

I think that it does not take its toll on those two because they are totally devoid of empathy and compassion and see high office simply as a means to feed their egos and enrich themselves.

I know - plucking up the energy to make a Dahl!

😅I'm sat here tying to motivate myself to wash my hair and then put a chicken curry in the slow cooker! If I was PM I'd be looking at a way of shuffling into the HoC in my pjs and slippers clutching a big mug of tea!

You do realise it's not just Starmer doing everything. He will have staff working for him to do research, plan his itineraries, telling him where he has to be, at what time, who he will be meeting, preparing notes and speeches for him etc.

I guess, as a human rights QC, he has dealt with some pretty horrible people (without retaliating or topping himself after the nightmares he must have had) here and internationally so good training for his current job. He must have fantastic self control and a huge amount of determination.

Of course I realise that! I know he has advisers, researchers (one of my uncles was an MP) intininery planners etc. I was commenting on how a PM must have constant demands on them and that it would absolutely overwhelm most people

CherryBlossomPie · 15/04/2025 18:04

Yes Starmer is an impeccable statesman. Exactly what is needed.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 15/04/2025 18:20

Well if he trades more of our NHS with the orange tyrant, most of us won’t be saying so.

Woodburnerisout · 15/04/2025 18:31

Hats off to him I say

StandFirm · 19/04/2025 21:16

As long as he doesn't do a deal with this fascist administration because it will not be 'just' trade. It will be a pledge of allegiance with dire consequences for women.
Pursuing a deal with a democratic USA - by all means.
Pursuing a deal with Fuckers Inc. - No. Way.

I found it unexpectedly moving when he greeted Zelensky with a bear hug yesterday. I'm not an uncritical admirer of Starmer, but I do think he's doing a reasonable job of plotting a best fit line through the current diplomatic clusterfuck.

agreed.
although simultaneously turning into Farage at home isn’t to be applauded.
