Playing Trump like a fiddle, knowing his weakness for flattery and star power. Starmer begins by presenting a letter of invitation from Charles III.

He says he has been chosen by god and is going to take Greenland

Nope, he's been chosen by Putin

I reckon this could extend to the UK dangling the idea of some kind of honorary gong in front of him and his lady wife. 'Lady Starmer sends her kindest regards to the First Lady, Mrs Trump ... His Majesty the King would love to meet her when he has a free moment away from bestowing honours on the worthy ... we value the long-standing friends of the UK very much ...'

Though Trump probably really wants a Nobel Peace Prize, even if he has to share it with someone. Starmer knows that. He's Blair to the core.

He hasn't the art of Blair's polished delivery. Starmer made me cringe with embarrassment. The King's letter should have been delivered privately. It would have sounded more sincere that way, or better still, the King should have invited him personally by phone.

Trump craves public attention and imagines himself to be worthy of adoration.

A public display of the King's invitation makes him wet his pants

I don't think it is new information to state Trump craves attention.

The only person wetting himself in that scenario though was rabbit in the headlights Starmer, trying to impress the big kid with a treat. Absolutely cringeworthy.

Completely agree, Janiie; I understand the game Starmer was having to play, but it was still painful to watch

I only hope he manages to gag Lammy during Trump's visit; mention was made earlier about Starmer's previous remarks, but they paled into insiginficance against the Foreign Secretary's Hmm

Starmer threw the dog a bone, and the dog loved it.

Or, Starmer grovelled cap in hand 'here sir please look at my gifts!'. Trump and Co would have found it all very amusing.

We need someone with a bit of backbone representing our country and he is not it.

Who do you suggest?

I don't think they'd go on my say so sadly and let's face it, it's slim pickings on Labour's front bench.
However I doubt Ms Reeves or Ms Rayner would've looked like they were about to burst into tears.
Or Yvette Cooper? She's quite steely bet she wouldn't have grovelled like that.

BIossomtoes · 12/03/2025 18:18

No point in sending Trump a woman. He thinks they belong in the kitchen. I imagine anyone having to deal with Trump would feel like bursting into tears. However, even Cleverly thought Starmer didn’t put a foot wrong.

Good God. No. I respect Yvonne a lot but she isn’t the right person for this at all.

Sadly it was never going to be the case of sending our best fit and knowing that would mean success. I think Starmer did as well as anyone could, but Trump is hotheaded and it’s hard to predict what he will do next. He seems to contradict himself on a daily basis.

I think your telly might have been on the blink.

Tommy Robinson, let's get this country back on track, we need some get up and go and show a fair few thousand the door, take care of our own, British industry was the best in the world until Maggie sold it all off, time to reclaim it!!!

Well that's a bit random. We were talking about Starmer looking terrified and wetly handing over an invite from King Charles to get in Trump's good books.

Not quite sure where Tommy Robinson or 'Maggie' fits in here. One is dead and the other in prison Confused.

PigletJohn · 13/03/2025 15:32

You might have been saying terrified and wet.

Not everybody shares your interpretation, obv.

I don't think think Starmer was 'wetting himself' then though, unless it was with embarrassment at having to creep to that creep.
